Look it up, real life he was the drug addict, indifferent to her, but it made more sense as a song for him to sing it from the other side. It means so much to him because he was that guy, he had a loving, patient woman and he dismissed her time and time again. I won't forget or forgive myself for being that guy.

[Verse 1] She sits alone by a lamp post Trying to find a thought that's escaped her mind She says Dad's the one I love the most Michael Stipe's not far behind [Verse 2] She never lets me in Only tells me where's she's been When she's had too much to drink I say that I don't care I just run my hands through her dark hair And I pray to God, help me fly away He said [Chorus] Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain Let her sing, it eases all her pain Let her go, walk right out on me now And if the sun comes up tomorrow Let her be, let her be [Verse 3] This morning I woke up alone Found a note standin' by the phone That said maybe, D just maybe, I'll be back some day Like a fool, I wanted to look for you You walked in, I didn't know just what I should do So I sat back down with a case of Bud and a bottle of Jim Beam and I felt sorry for me And said [Chorus] Let her cry, if the tears fall down like rain Let her sing, if it eases all her pain Let her go, walk right out on me now And if the sun comes up tomorrow Let her be, let her be now, let her be [Solo] [Verse 4] Last night I tried to leave She cried so much I can not believe She was the same girl I fell in love with long ago Hmmmm She went in the back to get high I sat down on my couch and started to cry for my Momma I said, Mamma please won’t you come and take me outta here She said, boy [Chorus] Let her cry, her tears fall down like rain Let her sing, she can sing, she can sing, and it eases all her pain You gotta let her go I walked out on her you see And if the sun comes up tomorrow Let her be, yeah [Chorus] Let her cry, yes her tears fall down like rain Let her sing, if it eases all her pain Let her go, no, no I walked out on her, I left her you see And if sun comes up tomorrow Let her be, no, no, no, no, no, oh Let her be

Darius, I sing this song every day, because it’s what I had to do to my husband and he was a navy chief petty officer. It was so hard to do with three children. Thank you for helping me through it. Even though it still hurts and our children are grown. Thank you.❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰

God Bless you and your family for your family’s service to our country! I’m sorry, that happened, sometimes it has to happen even though we don’t want it to happen. I’m at that point 20 yrs in the Air Force with kiddos, it’s gonna be a tough road

The feeling he put into the last verse and chorus in this version is amazing, and the different lyric: "I walked out on her..." breaks my heart. I relate. 🖤

I like to think the entire last verse and chorus is a conversation between his mother and him. Kinda like Last night I tried to leave. She cried so much I could not believe. She was the same girl I fell in love with long ago. She went in the back to get high. I sat down on my couch, and I started to cry for my momma. I said, "Momma please, won't you come and take me out o' here?" She said, "Boy, let her cry. Her tears fall down like rain. Let her sing." She can sing. She can sing. "And it eases all her pain. You gotta let her go." I walked out on her you see. "And if the sun comes up tomorrow let her be."

Hey there! I thought I would share this in case you didn’t know. That lyric change, which I think he throws in during live performances every so often, is actually showing that he was really the girl in the song, and the girl was actually him. he shared that background during an interview.
