Just Love BRP. It's all pretty inter-compatible, particularly Magic World.

Excellent! Just what I've been looking for. Less magic - more fun. No leveling system but skill based. So good.

I liked using the Mythras way of doing weapon skills (they're more like styles, where your skilled in a group of weapons and gained a unique benefit) with my couple of dark ages one shots. Pulp really does make it less like real life Vietnam, and more like rambo for sure lol.

The only D&D killer that will ever exist is Hasbro itself. Nothing else will kill it, but Hasbro themselves. Everything else are just games we can enjoy and love to ignore Hasbro.

This is good to know! I have never played Cthulu and I think I can see how these recommendations I will work for a dark and gritty game. Thanks for the video, Bear!

I love Cthulhu Dark Ages but never thought about running a fantasy adventure with it.

Well Cthulhu uses the BRP system which was written for Runequest, a fantasy rpg.

@@lordstronghold7189 Of course just never thought to use it. Love Runequest though.

Mongoose’s Conan RPG came out at the height of d20 era when almost all games used d20 system (D&D 3.x) even if the mechanics didn’t serve the setting or tone. Granted, Conan seems to be one of the best versions of d20 system. Mongoose was thinking about converting Conan to RuneQuest rules, IIRC. But then they lost license to Conan and a bit later to RuneQuest.

It's always a good time when you talk about why Call of Cthulhu is better than D&D, Bear 😁 I'm looking forward to seeing how the Call of Cthulhu Dark Ages system meshes with the Codex Albana world you've created 🤘

LOVE Jackals. Solid advice overall. I'm a huge fan of anything D100-based.

I have this b/c of Clark Ashton Smith and his French-flavored Averoigne setting. I’m going to use the setting, beasts etc to cross-pollinate with my D&D 5e game. Some great medieval legends, lore, and monsters. 👍🏼

I wish Call of Cthulhu was the top dog in the market. I think it would be better for the hobby.

The Magic book is just the Runequest magic systems converted to BRP (the Gold book version)

Sounds interesting. I’m still partial to d&d though.

I kind of like TSR’s Conan game from the 80’s. It’s pretty streamlined but still has a lot of depth at the sane time in the same way D6 does. The magic system is pretty opened ended and feels a lot like the Conan books. It’s just a set of guidelines for spells. Being a wizard is not going to be appealing to most because there is obsession and you will be preoccupied by research probably in the same way a wizard in Conan would.

Call of Cthulhu Dark Ages? Interesting. Have you played Death Bringer or Deathbringer by Professor Dungeon Master?

Read it, not into class+level stuff, I don't D&D at this point in my life. BRP works just perfectly for me :)

Well, CoC and other BRPs and their additions are quite good, tho' to be honest - the more system is lacking the more obnoxious and unplayable it is. Runequest and Call of Cuthulu are developed enough to bear the weight of the set goal - meanwhile the newest D&D is not only barely hauling the campaign by itself, it also lost the grip over a whole lot of the fanbase. It's cracking up the more somebody discovers other systems and ways of playing tabletop RPGs. Homebrews became a vital part of it, tho' it is even funnier due to the fact that homemade systems are probably the best option to play. It already posses everything we desire and there's a little effort in putting in new mechanics. Ie. DnD 5e became Skyrim of tabletop - 10 out of 10 due to fanmade modules which make it a new/fresh game. To play, IMO, you and your players should be willing to either play a game or run a story - otherwisely it is doomed to fail shortly due to the fact that a single player's not engaging. No matter what you run, your memories of played sessions will stain it for better or worse. Even tho' there's thorn in your side, you are still striving for the perfect session of 5e - meanwhile it've been a miracle or soft-ruled session (low usage of the rules contained in the rulebook).

Yeah, D&D is clearly broken. It is class not skills based. The level-up idea is annoyingly unrealistic. Sometimes it is easier just to make your own system than to Frankenstein all these games together. I am a big fan at looking at things for idea(r)s though. Bear, Oink! = @ )
