Dark Messiah: The Story of Jacob Frank, Poland's Puzzling Cult Leader
Nobel Laureate Olga Tokarczuk's Magnum Opus has been translated from the Polish by Jennifer Croft. An epic historical fiction that spans the Polish Commonwealth, exploring the life of Jacob Frank a controversial, false Messiah whose love for breast milk knows no bounds.

Interesting to hear you talking about it. Despite tiny flaws I loved The Books of Jakob, but the history of Poland is a well known concept to me (oh modest me), but even to most Poles the history Tokarczuk writes about is not well known. BTW Ch like in Chmielowski in Polish is always pronounced like H in home, for the lack of better sound. Lovely daughter you have, and pierogi look great! Oh and the song, Olga needs to hear it :-)

Kamil, Dziękuję! Do you know how panicked I was filmed and the state of despair I was in editing this knowing my Polish pronounciation was… questionable 😂 (also, how DO you say Wajgełe?) Will take all the pierogi compliments!

Well this is entertaining, but I have yet to make a decision as to whether I'll be reading this tome. Having listened to you, I wonder if this book is as dense as The Eighth Life, which I spent a rather long time reading and ended up calling a favourite. It is certainly one to mull over, even if it does sound weird as heck. (Tha certainly put a lot of work into this review and that ought to be commended.)

@@mgenkin Thank you for this. I suppose it's going to be a case of just doing what I've done with other hefty tomes and taking it slow. (I don't suppose you've read The Brothers Karamazov? I'm trying to think of parallels in my head and I'm feeling like if I managed that, then I can manage The Books of Jacob.)

I'm having a project writing on this, have to select two books of Olga Tokarczuk.

The Books of Jacob is by far the most boring book I've ever read. I wish I had read a textbook on Marxism or an adventure from a nursing home instead. It would be much more fun. This book shortened my life by at least three years. Total utter sh.t. The Nobel prize was given just because the sect described in the book is very strong nowadays. Rating 2.2/10. It's not 1 just because she invested an enormous amount of her time in researching.
