One more argument worthy of adding to this list is from Ricky Gervais to Steven Colbert. Went something like this “if you burn all the scientific books, in a 1000 years they will come back exactly how they are now. Not the case with any religious book.”

Arthur C. Clarke created Clarke’s Three Laws, and law #3 stated: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” -This is the unusual problem we are encountering with the less educated and slower-developing regions of our society: Science is progressing at such a rate and we have discovered so much about our universe that those who are not privy to the resources, or for one reason or another reject those resources, see the information provided as being somehow impossible without supernatural intervention. Without the foundation of education to support the information, the explanations sound supernatural and magical and are rejected using explanations that the science somehow doesn’t follow linear thinking, the traditional understanding of cause-and-effect, or some other argument. When one learns to comprehend the science; the misconceptions, misunderstandings, lack of knowledge, flaws in reasoning and critical thinking often become recognizable and can be addressed and ideas once considered too complex to comprehend become clear (or at least as clear as we have come to understand them). Education is definitely not always an easy road to travel, nor is it a short journey; but it is always well worth the trip!

@@lagodifuoco313 "I'm not going to read that" is the willful choice of ignorance over enlightenment. It is also a very common and preferred option among the vast majority of society. This is not to imply that my original comment is of great value, well written, or that it is even correct. I have seen many posts that were of great length that were written by individuals who obviously lacked mental stability or who were otherwise simply repeating quotations and tired tropes, stereotypical arguments, and meaningless jargon. The difference was: I actually read them. By reading them I was able to form an opinion of the writer's objective, biases, level of education, professionalism, familiarity with the topic, etc. With this in mind I was able to decide whether or not if the topic was worthy of pursuing. This also added to my volumes of information relevant to the topic being discussed, if only in a minor or abstract way. In other words: There are some people, like myself, who read everything. And we are well aware that the level of discussions that we participate in and attempt to instigate are not for individuals such as the one who posted the "I don't read long comments" response.

@@psyekl I'm with you on a lot of that. That "ill informed" position seems to be what drives belief in flat earth - the true believers, anyway. There are a bunch who are obviously on the grift. It can be very frustrating watching them proclaim that something "violates natural law" when it is quite obvious that they are so ignorant (and by ignorant I mean lacking in information/education) they don't actually understand what IS natural law. An example I've heard regarding gravity: How can "gravity" reach out and grab the oceans and hold them to the surface of a globe, yet a butterfly can still fly where ever it wants. Why does can't gravity reach out and grab the butterfly and hold it to the ground. The butterfly weighs a lot more than the butterfly, the butterfly shouldn't be able to move if gravity is true? The fact is, there is so much wrong with a statement like this that it's hard to even know where to start. They have such a monumental misunderstanding of EVERYTHING that it is hard to find anything they understand about reality that actual communication is next to impossible.

I agree. The truth is provisional depending upon many, many factors, to step out of the realm of "theory" into the world of "Truth" aka "Fact". Takes trained and cautious eyes from all over the world to determine that. MANY people haven't learned critical thinking or seeing the whole picture and have their own extremely skewed views of reality. They worry too much; don't have enough psychic energy or proper education, don't read good literature, iffy education. But they can vote.

Temperament is a person dispotion socially (a choleric man wearing hot pink isn't that much more masculine because he's choleric). Finally gender is traits culturally associated with the sexes i.e pink for women and blue for men even though those things have nothing to do with biology. The fact of the matter is certain things and people are more gendered than others like trousers being male leaning gender neutral, jeans being truly gender neutral, skirts are feminine, tank tops being masculine, caps being masculine leaning gender neutral and jewelry being feminine leaning gender neutral. All these things and the way people choose to express their gender being on a spectrum.

@@lejandario7779 perhaps I was referring to sex, but if gender is traits culturally associated with the sexes, how is it a spectrum? you said sex is binary, and gender is a social construct of perceptions that's rooted in sexual identity, ie colors & clothes. honestly, if it is just a social construct, we are just arguing over something that is made up and not based on reality anyways.

@@ensontaylor4836 A spectrum is just anything that is on a gradient ( which is almost everything) and not binary. Let's take skin tone, if you want to classify people into black or white you could do that but if you line up a 100 people, albino will bleed into pale, into pink, then tan, yellow, golden, chocolate then dark. It becomes harder to draw a definitive line as to where one begins and one ends. Then if you realise they are 2 ends of the same thing then that's a spectrum. Why are we arguing over it? I'd call it a discussion but we are because this is something that people often misunderstand, as you did. That misunderstanding made you consider Neil Degras Tyson as less credible of a physicist even though he was right both on gender and what he said in the video.

As person of faith(Christian), i love science and learning about the universe through science. I agree with many arguments here and in awe of the top scientific minds, and don’t have much time for religious fundamentalism. The science makes me truly humbled before the magnificence of the universe. But I wish there was a little more understanding/insight into the complexity of good religion and how ideas don’t necessarily contradict - rather than the typical broad brush, often naive, and entrenched Conflict Hypothesis way of arguing. I don’t see reason and faith as much at war with each other, as much as some think them to be. I suspect these are reactions to fundamentalism more than religion. Great and interesting video thanks.

The insecure theists on here who don’t even attempt to refute anything and go right into whiney dismissals and offering inept strawman arguments only support why religion is such a bad thing. Good thing religion is on the decline.

I'll make an attempt. Sam Harris first. He discusses a few strawmans of Christian responses and honestly, the Christian responses are indeed quite bad. There are a multitude of philosophical arguments for the existence of God, then there's historical evidence for the existence, death and resurrection of Jesus. It's not just believing it's true for me, I think it's true based on those arguments. Let's discuss Neil claiming that the literal interpretation of Genesis started to be doubted after scientific discoveries. Blatently false. Philo, for example, as a pre-Jesus Jewish philosopher writes that the 6 days of Genesis provide not a literal account, but an ordered account of how God created the world. And he interprets the 6 days as symbolic for the perfection of Creation. Neil also claims that as we've discovered more, religious people had to change their interpretation often. And that is true. It would have been irresponsible not to change the interpretation, so I'm not sure why this is a bad thing. If the new information is not enough reason to throw away the baby with the bathwater, then you should obviously not throw away the baby with the bathwater. And scientific discoveries haven't been enough to throw away that baby. In fact, many discoveries seem to indicate that the universe didn't get the properties it has now by chance. They did the math, the chance is so extremely improbable that scientists are speculating about a multiverse to deal with the extremely low odds of this coming around by coincidence. Now there's a story of some guy I do not know about physics. I haven't really found arguments in his story to be honest. It was a big story about how you can make up a meaning for your own life based on what's left to discover in this huge universe. I do like it when atheists are honest about the fact that you can make your own meaning. It's a game of make-belief to me. If you act like it all matters long enough, eventually you'll believe it. It doesn't make it true though, no matter how important scientist think their discoveries are, them believing it is important does not make it true. Now there's the talk with the big formula on the board. I think with this it comes down to the definitions of explanation and your philosophical take on science. I do not believe that formula explains everything we have ever scientifically observed but I do think it describes it. And there is a difference between the two. I don't think the description of certain behavior of particles is sufficient to be an explanation. In the same way describing why the water boils by giving facts about physics is simply not an explanation, but a description. It's not an answer to the question "why?" but to the question "How?" and implying that it's an answer to the "How?" question is within the realms of Philosophy of Science, not physics. In other words, just because physics can describe behavior of particles, doesn't mean they have given an explanation. It's just a description nothing more, nothing less. A very, very useful and powerful description, nut still only that. Any conclusions based on that description, and you're entering philosophical realms and philosophical presuppositions, like methodological naturalism. Did I miss any arguments? It was hard to find any arguments actually, so I just gave my thoughts on the topics as a whole.

You do not know what you are talking about. The writers of the Bible never thought the stars were angels or demens. We know that the Bible was talking about demens, not literal stars, because right out of the same book, it says that they were demens. If you take just a small piece of a book, you can make it sound false, but you have to take the whole book.

God does give you a purpose to live, the purpose is to have the right fear of God (one of displeasing him) and keeping his commandments. Doing that will give you the best life you can live now while at the same time you can help others get that same life now. The best that man can do is record what God did when he had his son Jesus create the universe. Something that has a pattern is not chaotic. Instead it shows design.

@@campfireaddict6417 So then you don't know of anyone that loves their parents so much that they wouldn't want to do anything that brings about their displeasure or disappointment. Well I know people that are truly like that. Fear of punishment is not out of love. It is the wrong kind of fear. Fear of displeasing God is what Jesus had which is why he kept all of the commandments perfectly. Whereas I an imperfect human being cannot do it perfectly. I still keep getting up dusting myself off and keep on trying. The punishment for Disobedience to God is destruction. It would be like you never existed at all. You would be under the bonds of the second death, without the hope of a resurrection, forever. Where no one would remember you. Even God would forget you even existed.

@@liggettselectThe bible teaches that God is still credited with creating all things. God created Christ first then through Christ God created all things. Jesus became a master worker besides his father. This is saying that instead of creating Jesus then God directly creating all other angels then the universe and us directly. Where his spirit sons had no meaningful work to do but watch is not how God operates. He gives his firstborn son the privilege of being a master worker besides him. Since God still choose what was created and how it would be created means God is still credited with creating all things. Since God had everything created the way he wanted whether God did it directly on his own without Christ's help or not he still gets the credit for creating all things. Because God choose what was created and how he wanted it created.
