On the real with Malenia's backstory, I genuinely don't believe that she deliberately released the Scarlet Bloom on Radahn. Her _entire_ backstory up to that point revolves around doing everything in her and Miquella's power to contain and cure it, up to and including Miquella leaving their father over it who he otherwise had perfectly healthy relations with. The likelier series of events seems to be "Radahn breaks the unalloyed gold needle embedded inside of Malenia's body in the blow he lands on her prosthetic arm -> Malenia, mid-jump, either continues attacking one-handed ignorant of the Scarlet Bloom about to blow or else knowing and just not being able to do anything else." Her whole character as a proud swordswoman that actively refuses to call upon its power until beaten unconscious/dead in Phase 1 of her in-game bossfight- that gets seemingly puppeted(?) afterwards and refers to the Scarlet Bloom (the Outer God influencing her) in the third person- doesn't really make sense if she was the kind of person that actively used it as a weapon any time she was pressed in a fight.

Follow-up counterpoint to my own theory on this: Millicent _does_ say that Malenia "abandoned her pride" to meet Radahn's measure in the Prayer Room, which carries the implication of a deliberate break of the needle. And we _do_ know that its possible for someone to do it to themselves since Millicent does so when she finds out why Gowry actually wanted her to survive to begin with. That being said- assuming none of this is just plain old mistranslation- It is possible that Millicent just doesn't know what she's talking about in that respects, straight-up. She does live in Caelid which was always going to be embittered against Malenia for doing what she did and probably at least lightly demonize her, and would've had their perspective of her invasion to go off of, and seems to be an amnesiac besides. It's _also_ just a vague thing to say in general- 'abandoning her pride to meet Radahn's measure' could just be going to pick a fight with the demigod who was famously the absolute strongest around, at the time, because of something she felt she _had_ to do, despite the obvious risk it imposed. If that were the case though, it would probably have to be the case as well that she knew what would happen if she did let the needle break. There's the question of why she was there in the first place and why she ignored _every_ single other land she passed through to pick a fight with Radahn and only Radahn specifically of course. The only things I can think of in that respect are A: Mohg kidnapped Miquella prior to that point and framed Radahn for it convincingly enough to fool them all, while himself keeping his existence a secret, or B: Miquella was still around and was sending Malenia to go kill Radahn so as to stop him from halting the stars in place, as part of wanting to do his Castle Sol ritual thing and create a solar eclipse to interfere with the nature of death and bring back Godwyn or whoever. If Option B is the case, we're pretty much guaranteed to hear about it with Shadow Of The Erdtree since all the signs point to it being about Miquella/Godwyn/deathblight as a concept.

I think she fits the "corrupted hero" role a lot, specially since her character revolves around resistance and fighting against the rot. But Radahn breaking the needle destroyed the thing that holded the rot back or gave her the power to hold it back and therefore even with all her willpower Malenia couldnt resist anymore. Thats at least what I think

Radahn appears to only break the prosthetic arm, and Malenia then purposely impales herself on her own sword, followed by the Scarlet Aeonia occurring. As such, Malenia probably did break the needle herself, and the impaled area on her body matches up well with where Millicent applies the needle in turn.

I'm aware of the cinematic, yeah. Things to consider on that front: > We don't actually *see* Millicent apply the needle to herself because the screen fades to black, when she asks us to look away. To me, that feels like it implies that somewhere or other more intimate as being the proper place to put it, than just the upper part of the shoulder, which is where Malenia stabs herself with the handle of the blade (not even really "stabs herself", more like just falls onto it with the edge of the metal joint of her arm to drive it in deeper.) So while possible this is her breaking the needle it doesn't seem the likeliest thing, and could just be her rushing to take Radahn down with her when she recognizes something inside's about to blow and won't know what happens after that. (It could also have just been an _accident_ in which case, lol.) > The whole cinematic is a stylized telling of events by Ranni in the first place, who is rather infamous for not telling the entire truth of things. In that very same cinematic, she omits from her narration a lot of what she knows for the sake of dramatics and telling a better story, all that jazz (i.e. her being the one that stole the Rune of Death and allowed this to happen in the first place.) It is still definitely possible that she just, did in fact break her own needle in desperation with the Blade of Malenia, but imo that'd be... I dunno, mad underwhelming a narrative beat? I'm all for more mundane fallen heroes having moments of moral weakness, but that just feels pointless from a writing perspective in terms of FromSoft doing things with her characterization since it both ends her arc with a regression and book-ends it permanently with the whole "and then she goes into a delusional coma until the Tarnished shows up and then kind of just goes '?????' and whacks them til she dies." But ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm sure in any case Miyazaki knows better than I do where they're going with it all. To me, it was always just a big part of _Radahn's_ character and the tragedy of the Redmanes as a whole, that the battle with Malenia shouldn't have even happened in the first place, that the signs point to them wanting more or less the same thing.

The description for the Lone Wolves spirit ashes says that each wolf was previously found by a Tarnished though, meaning that Miquella, a demi-god, couldn't have been the one to find the wolves and impart them along with the bell. Perhaps Ranni was only requested to bequeath the bell and the spirit ashes were a pity gift from her, but it's uncharacteristic for Ranni to give any gifts to random people.

It's worth noting, the second bloom outside of Melania's arena IS Malenia's. The Rotten Sword Insignia talisman talks about the 4 sisters and says that "those buds were doomed to never blossom." To get it, you need to help Millicent so she doesn't bloom, and if her four sisters never bloomed either, the only character left who even could bloom is Melania.

My favorite part of lore is how little respect Radagon gets despite probably being as responsible for building up the Golden Order institutionally as Marika and they'd probably all be a barbarian tribe still without him. Like it borders on comedy how little anybody seems to care about him. None of his kids seem to care he's gone, a lot of stuff he presumably did got attributed to Marika. The only people who seem to remember him fondly are the Troll Knights in Raya Lucaria he didn't needlessly enslave and practioners of Golden Order Fundamentalism he probably helped create but doesn't get credit for either. That's the real prepare to cry to me like if you think about what an Elden Lord should do he's probably overall a better one than Godfrey in terms of both length of rule and what he helped accomplish in terms of civilization but he'll never get the credit he's due. Hell I think trying to prevent the Shattering was probably as much "I sacrificed everything for the Golden Order." as much as he was true believer. Which is admittedly as selfish as Marika shattering it to not be the plaything of The Elden Beast but it makes sense when you look at just how little credit he got and how much Civilization advanced with him as Elden Lord..

You've still got it, Tark! This is a great video on how the Scarlet Rot turned the Waterfowl Dance into the Foul Water Dance. Also, the Haligtree army survivors who made it back from Caelid brought the ultra Scarlet Rot with them, thereby super ruining *two* nations and filling the Haligtree to the brim with Scarlet Rot, Kindred of Rot, and the Revenants from Hell. The Scarlet Rot also probably made Malenia into its pawn, hence why, upon leaving her coma and seeing a new arrival at her brother's orphanage/homeless shelter island, her first instinct is to try brutally murdering them. Malenia's Scarlet Rot copies attack also features four butterfly warriors, perhaps representing the four sisters who sided with Gowry, and that Malenia, true to her Phase 2 health bar, is only at 80% thanks to Millicent holding out against the Scarlet Rot. Millicent is basically the manifested part of Malenia that remembered it's always a bad idea to use a behelit in Berserk. Too bad that fifth of Malenia didn't or couldn't impart that lesson to Miquella, who tried to go Femto and just ended up being called a femboy by Mohg stans. Gideon says Miquella is just sleeping, but that sleeping seems like the Fallout 3 severed head that's "merely pretending" to be dead, so based on the ghostly tombstones, the DLC will take place in a spirit world, where more Death Blight is trying to kick the deepest lore Helphen's ass. By the way, with how Malenia's will to resist the Scarlet Rot was split off into its own person, does this mean that Malenia copied her mom/dad and divorced herself because it was trendy? How do the other sisters fit in, and did Miquella create the St. Trina persona so he could divorce it later and try to win more affection from his parent(s)? Also, if the DLC is in the past, what does this mean for Rennala's famous divorce and the possibility of preventing it? What would a true divorce analyst do in that situation? Thanks again, Tark!

5:15 I actually did fight them! I have a strict "kill everything" policy for each area, and I did not break it. It was absolutely brutal though. I tried a ton of different strategies, baiting the tree, baiting the knights, ranged, using the room above, and so on, and had little success. Eventually, I settled on using my best flame incants to wittle down the tree in a couple of surprise attacks from the grace behind it, running up the ladder and knocking off the pursuing knights each time, then I cleaned up the rest with the help of Headless Lhutel and ranged incants for the ballistae to the side, and it worked

I think Marika was the former owner of Torrent. Melina offers us the horse saying he chose us, and he only appears after Marika has been locked away in the erdtree, meaning that he intended to take you back to the erdtree to save Marika. Ranni also states that the lone wolf summons belonged to Torrents former master, the one big image of someone with three wolves is the statue of Marika in Farum Azula. Miquella, as a child of Marika probably has every right to Torrent but it may be another of his kind given that there are skeletons in the swamp of Aeonia that look just like Torrent. If not then he's the only adorable horse goat spirit left :(

I feel like there are some holes in that theory. We don’t know for sure that the childlike statue is Marika, it could be her or Miquella and it’s sort of ambiguous as to which it is. It would make more sense for it to be Marika considering it’s location, but it’s also prudent to consider that the Steed Whistle is a whistle that is finely crafted from Gold and shared many flowy design characteristics from Miquella’s needle.

The spirit ashes for the wolves say that each wolf was previously found by a Tarnished, so that can't be Marika, who is a god, or Miquella, who is a demi-god. Also, there are hundreds, if not thousands of years between Marika's imprisonment and the player character arriving in the Lands Between, so a lot could happen in that time regarding Torrent and any previous master.

@Night Scout Ah I think I conflated the wolf summons with the bell and Ranni's statement. The bell belonged to whoever was Torrents master but the wolves belonged to previous Tarnished as you said. Thank you for helping see that

@@oliver_twisted6838 Ranni is not the type of person to give a free spirit ash summon to someone she has never met though. Therefore, the ashes were probably intended to be delivered along with the bell, and thus the Tarnished mentioned in the ash description probably had the bell too.

Nice to hear my theory that Milicient was originally intended to be an amnesiac Malenia is confirmed. Seeing her red hair and missing arm, and hearing she was infected with scarlet rot, my immediate thought was "Oh snap, she is literally Malenia! The fight with Radahn REALLY destroyed both of them." The fact that it was cut explains so much about the state of her quest on release. Honestly it's a shame too, because not only would it have further driven home that literally everyone involved in that battle lost, but it would make perfect sense for her to immediately turn on you when she remembers she is the Empyrean and no filthy Tarnished will ever sit on the throne. Big L for the game that it was cut.

I am torn on melania as a boss. Some of her moves are super fun to learn to dodge, most of them are honestly. But waterfoul dance just feels unintuitive at point blank, especially of using a heavy weapon with high recovery. It's not impossible, but given the communities general experience and the fact that this ONE move people literally had to do reaserch on how to dodge it when point blank.... I just feel it would have been better used as something done when shes far away. It would punish passivity but still stay relevant due to her big back flip creating the space needed for it to activate under theese conditions. Otherwise love her, she still kicks my ass and I think mohg is slightly better rounded but when Melania works, lore, sound design, looks, and the music (I'll be it not top tier but still good) make her still something that is exiting to get to each playthrough.

Only once myself, but I have the strategy guide and I never looked it up... So yeah, apparently we can summon one of Milicent's sisters. I had no idea Milicent herself can be summoned in the fight before arriving at the Lift of Rold, and in the fight at Windmill Village with the Godskin Apostle...
