Stephanie kinda nailed it. SRK went from being a villain to a hero and hence the stardom, but everyone fondly remembers Darr. That's why when he became hero in a way people were taken aback and they liked it a lot. Now you guys should watch baazigar!

Sunny Deol was the quintessential macho hero of Bollywood in the 80s and 90s. So the role of a Navy officer fit him. And SRK was probably the only actor who risked his career by doing negative/grey roles (Darr, Baazigar, Ram Jaane) etc when in those times the lead actors would only do "hero" roles.

When SRK was asked about taking 'negative roles' at the beginning of his career, he said "I thought I'm not good-looking enough to be a hero, so let me just get a villain's job." I can see why he thought that but 1) he is very good looking and 2) it turned out not to matter at all. When Sunny Deol looked at Juhi I saw pretty much nothing in his eyes. When SRK looked a Juhi I saw insanity and obsession in his eyes, of course, but also the same love and longing that became his trademark and endeared him to people all over the world. Yash Chopra had to have seen it too and I'm sure he knew how valuable it could be in the proper context because, for the rest of Yash Chopra's life, SRK x YRF was a guaranteed romantic blockbuster.

This movie based in real world where everything has logic vs marvels and dc are fictional world and superhero movies, everything is fictional in them. So logic is always appiled on things which are real. That is reason why we find very less illogical scenes in hollywood movies.

​@hitman321100 Baazigar is iconic but is not even 1% as dark as anjaam. Baazigar had comic relief till the climax, but anjaam is extremely dark in the second half. SRK is a complete menacing villain in anjaam.

The epic laugh right there 6.05 . This is one of my favourite SRK-Juhi films. But SRK was just mind blowing. I didn't expect I'll have sympathy for a villain XD. The next movie should be either Asoka, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa or Fan.. 3 of the most underrated but awesome movies.

The director Yash Chopra offered the role of Rahul to Sunny Deal first, because he was a much bigger star. But he, along with many other big stars refused to take up a negative character because back at that times the leading stars only played "heroes" & SRK was the only one who was willing to do anything. Ultimately, the film is known as SRK's movie, where he played the anti-hero

Sunny deol was a huge star in the 90s. His brother Bobby was popular in late 90s-early 2000s. His father, Dharmendra is a 70s-80s superstar. One thing that binds all of them together is being over the top 😂 Dharmendra- Stopping bullets with hand Sunny- Shoving tubewells in peoples bellies and basically decimating entire Pakistan alone😂😂(from "Gadar") Bobby- He is the great "Lord Bobby" for memers

I think that especially for the time, there is a normal amount of suspension of disbelief in this movie... I don't find it illogical the way something like Amar Akbar Anthony is... There is some 90s cheese and stuff pushing the suspension of disbelief but not that much, the serious stalking aspect is well done and overall it makes for an enjoyable "romantic thriller". I didn't find the husband pervy?? I didn't notice the girls look underrage. But it was a joke anyway. And he wasn't wanking lol The only moment when he was being an ass is when he scared her in the pool, it was insensitive. But I saw nothing problematic in the movie at all. Also, the watch isn't a gps and the boat isn't in the ocean lol they're in Switzerland 😂 The boat is just on the lake a little away from the harbour.

Watch Damini movie by Sunny Deol, followed by movie Ghayal. You will know why he was so sellable in that era. Sunny has an iconic dialogue " Ye dhai kilo ka haath, jo kisipe padta hai na - aadmi uthta nahin uth jaata hai" (When this 5pound hand falls on someone, he doesn't get paralysed just dies [Just rhymes in hindi and not in english]) from Damini. Iconic dialogue like any generation Indian would be familiar with!

I don't think you understood the metaphoric symbolism of the clock scene. Juhi says to sunil whenever you will press the button in your watch, I will come running to you, so to show how much SRK wants Juhi, so many beeps go off.. it was symbolic. Lot of the elements are to invoke that sense of fear and creepiness. That's it. Not to be taken literally. And yes, logic cuts short in 90's films. Its just poetic romantic cinema!! These are the things that seperate Commercial Vs Art Vs Realistic Cinema!! Enjoy. 🙂🙏

I get your point about the husband being pervy on the honeymoon - but the whole point of that is to establish that they're in a carefree mood...and have sex on their mind. The thing about him recording the young girls - was not him being pervy...it was a joke he played on his wife. The second part where he's watching a sexy video - it's umm...to get in the mood...so the wife steps up and basically does a strip tease to help him along...that's all. nothing pervy there either.

It was just random joke between husband and wife. There was nothing problematic. Movie already established Sunny Deol was in Navy so he can swim river in difficult weather conditions. Movie also showed that SRK entered boat at early morning. And Sunny Deol came in boat after sunset. So only Rambo can recover bullet injury and keep fighting against entire army is logical? I found your flaws illogical and problematic not the movie. Yes effects of blood etc were not best at that time. But never felt it was such a big issue for this movie.

But what is illogical in Sunny Deol comming at the very end? That I didn't understood. They clearly showed Sunny Deol woke early in morning ask Juhi Chawla wait in the boat. And then conflict happened with SRK. So by late evening if they show Sunny Deol return with a bandage cloth. What was so illogical? Director clearly established Sunny Deol as Navy personal. So they.mean a Navy personal can't even swim because of rain? And they were continuously saying Sunny Deol was staring at underage girls. Did the movie mention age of the girls. It was just flirtatious scene between husband and wife. They reviewed as problematic. I mean what nonsense! Such a horrible review for such a great movie. Hollywood themselves tried to remake this movie as Fear (1996). But unfortunately they failed miserably.

Also, unless someone found him and took him to the hospital, Sunny realistically would have bled out on the forest floor. It's fairly common for heroes to take stomach wounds like that and survive in movies so I don't have a problem with that. When you have him swimming and then fighting to the death afterwards, however, that's a bit much and I'm not surprised at their reaction.

While *Hollywood* movies are *genre driven* , *Indian* movies are all *multi genre* films. While they have a dominant tone for their films - thriller in this case , We have comedy , action , drama , romance , emotional as underlying tones. Now, one can’t excel in all the areas. Can they ? A marvel makes films excelling in action and you cannot penalise it for not giving you a deep emotional story. Can you ? Similarly , you need to watch this for what it is and means and not really get into the intricate details of why what and how for every frame. You know you will only be spoiling it for yourself like this !! Also another advice - the scenes which you pointed out as problematic, weren’t actually so. They are culturally different. Indians get it. Maybe you don’t but that’s fine. Too much picking on those isn’t needed. Overall , I hope you enjoyed the film. Would have liked to see you talk about something nice about this film as well !!

I agree, they concentrated on details and missed the bigger picture. Partly it's the issue of sharing review just after watching the film without a second thought. But I'm not sure if I really wanted to hear their usual proper film review in this case. I like Darr too much, though I hate the climax. It's not an easy watch for foreigners who are not used to older Bollywood (coming from a foreigner who likes Bollywood 90s).
