Ali Zafar was so engrossed in the songs emotions and had drifted into a separate dimension emotionally that during the final shooting take he started crying in the middle of the song. It was a very personal song for him as he wrote some parts of it. The song is very emotional and takes you to another level. The song had flute and violins together, both which are very soul touching instruments.

The flute guy is probably the best basuri player in the world. He is part of the Pakistani jazz band called sachal band. They have performed in the US with renowned US jazz musicians. Their version of my favourite things is my favourite.

Heer and Ranjha are the Romeo and Juliet of the Punjabi folk and their story is one of the popular tragic romances of Punjab. This is a sufi song and you can't understand it until you know the historical culture of this region. There are many references of folklore which you can't understand. The lyrics are not straight jacketed. You should listen to more simpler songs on coke studio or nescafe basement

It is based on epic folk loric love tale of Heer-Ranjha from Punjab who could not be with each other and ends in tragedy. It is sung from Here (female) prospective and these poetic tales contains spiritual sides aswell as they are mostly written by legendary Sufi poets (Sufism is kind of a branch of Islam). The final version could not be completed as Ali got v emotional due singing it thinking about the tragedy of two lovers and they had to pack up.

Must Check out "Roshe by Zeb Bangash" from season 12. I mentioned it when Mehram came out and you asked to remind once s14 was over. Its the most soothing yet gloomy song. Poetry is by Habba Khatoon, queen of Kashmir whose Husband, Yousuf Shah Chak was the last king of Kashmir who went away for negotiations during a conflict and would never see his home ever again. Habba in her wait for him wrote this poem in her native Kashmiri language.

Ali Zafar is a very versatile musician. He has done slower classical stuff, including Qawwalis and Ghazals and has also done really modern songs like Rockstar, Rangeen, Huqqa Paani. He is known as the Prince of Pop in Pakistan. He is very genre-less. I just subscribed to your channel because I really like your reviews. The lyrics of this song are a mashup of 2 to 3 different folklores and that’s why the message seems a bit disjointed. As far as “Ranjha” concerned, he’s one part of our version of the Romeo and Juliet story(Heer being the other). Recommendation: Titiliyan(butterflies) by Strings from Coke Studio season 2. I think it’s totally down Jody’s lane and, Nick, you’ll get to hear Faisal Kapadia sing.

actually, the coke studio theme was to just remix old folk/sufi songs that's why most of the coke studio songs are religious. Before season 14, they used to produce only 1 or 2 new original tunes in every season and 90% of the songs were remix of old sufi music, so in this season 14 for the first time they produced all originals (no remix) but they kept the same theme of Sufism. Sufi music is the signature of coke studio, other then coke studio Pakistan has different types of songs like anywhere else
