You are so right about not paying attention to material stuff. My fiance didn't have a car or a phone when we met. I later on learned why this happened. He proved to be able to pull himself together, get his own phone, car,etc. I am so glad that those things didn't turn me off because he is the best. I had previous relationships that were "perfect " at first and they ended up being terrible people. So definitely we should never fall for first impressions

I was a very happy, outgoing yet naive 19 year old & began training as his Sioux Chef at his restaurant that he was the head Chef of. He was 42. I didn't know what a covert narcissist was at 19. I tried with every bit of sincerity to figure out what was going on for many years. I would literally be given prolonged silent treatments after being told how awful & unlovable I was because I would disagree with him on the most mundane topic or do something exactly the same way as many times before only to have him flip out on me for no reason. I'm simplifying & being somewhat vague only because others who have been in a narcissistic relationship, will understand the insanity of these vague examples. I didn't start to even learn about narcissism until I was 31 & working as a registered nurse. I knew that communication with him was absolutely impossible & he had zero capacity for empathy whatsoever. I started learning about it because I was becoming physically ill & struggling to identify the root of it all initially. I have an autoimmune condition & other health issues developed from years of emotional & psychological abuse with unbelievable inhumane neglect & cruelty. I am 41 now. 20 years with a covert narcissist damn near broke me & I still struggle with major depression & anxiety so though it honestly doesn't feel very good to be so readily doubted without having the full context of my experience, I know people throw narcissist around about as much as people who want to dismiss the claims of others. I don't need validation for the hell I've been through or permission to share what I've personally experienced with a covert narcissist. I would have loved to actually be clueless as to what it's like to be the spouse of a person incapable of love. I genuinely hope you never have to know what this feels like.
