Lyrics
(And I hope.. and I hope..)
I've practiced this for hours, gone round and round
And now I think that I've got it all down
And as I say it louder, I love how it sounds
'Cause I'm not taking the easy way out
Not wrappin' this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why
It's no surprise. I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed 'til today
Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise
It came out like a river, once I let it out
When I thought that I wouldn't know how
Held onto it forever, just pushing it down
It felt so good to let go of it now
Not wrapping this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why

One of the main reasons Chris Daughtry has been so successful is because for years prior a lot of people had been starving for some no-nonsense, straightforward rock music. The almost thirty million views of this video/song alone are a testament to the appeal and staying power for this genre of music ... wish the record companies would put more focus and energy into supporting it.

“The warm embrace that no one knows, the loving look that’s left your eyes, but I know in time we’ll find this was no surprise” I love that lyric so much. The pain of leaving someone behind because that loving look isn’t there anymore, but you’ll still miss them, their embrace. All of the good times you had together. And you’ll never let those memories go because you still care about them, even if it’s for the best that the relationship is over. Really love the whole last chorus, but those lines specifically. Chris could word love like not many others, and he was incredible at it. Still makes my eyes a little wet if I listen to it on the right day.

It was the summer of my Junior year in High School when this song came out. I had a job at the mall and I closed all the time that summer. I worked at a Great American cookies and it was my job to roll the little kiosk across the mall to the main store, I passed the food court every time. They always played VH1 music videos in the food court and this song always came on around closing time, like clockwork. I would stop and watch this video and it made me think about how the future was going to be. Thanks Daughtry, wish you were still putting out the hits in 2019!
