I was Dave's guitar tech during that entire period that he's referring to. And I can say this much. Whether Dave was clean, or Dave was getting high. He was always, ALWAYS, a pleasure to work for. There were times (especially during the Jane's tour) where it was scary. And I was very worried about him. I was there, at that rehearsal where he was "falling down". It was rough. I gave him a ride home that day, and as crazy as it sounds, he made me laugh most of the way to his house. He's awesome. I miss him.

Dave is his own color and he was excellent on OHM. Listen to the OHM demos and Daves guitar tracks. You will hear his genius. Dave is a blessed man to record with JA & RHCP. @@MLCrow absolutely agree, i was enthusiast when they announced frusciante was coming back in those daysw, but when i have listened to californication it was for me quite disappointing, it didnt have tha magic of bssm, and from there on their style became more and more pop. @@woozee100 Some say (mostly Frusciante's fans or lovers) that OHM doesn't sound like a RHCP's album, so they hate OHM. It's funny to me as for example By The Way (album) with Frusciante sounds even more estranged (musically) compared to their previous albums (with or without Frusciante). I can't stand By The Way album (with the exception of 2 or 3 songs). Their music feels so "artificial" to me since Californication, I mean with no soul, attitude anymore.
@woozee100
@woozee100 2 жыл бұрын
@@MLCrow by the way is probably the worst album af their career. My theory is that if frusciante didn't leave the band in the 90's they would probably have made another amazing album after BSSM, because in that period they still had a lot to say and had a lot of inspiration. The frusciante that came back in the 2000's, is a different musician and person (after all the drugs abuse) and will take the band in a completely different songwriting mostly inspired by his solo albums which apart the first one their are really nothing special. And I think they sound artificial because they forced themselves to leave that funk/rock/ psychodelic style that was the trademark of the band and become a more pop/ mellow/commercial band. Actually the move was a success for the band because they earn a lot of new fans, but the old ones that loved their album in the 90's were very disappointed. And I think that new type of songwriting also limited a lot the potential of flea as a bass player. His bass in BSSM and OHM was fundamental for their sound and in albums like by the way he really had to back off and limit himself. When john quit the band for the second time instead of taking a clone of frusciante I would have taken Navarro without thinking, and I'm sure they would have made amazing stuff!

“Transcending” and “Circle Of The Noose” are truly great songs and I think if Flea, Anthony and Chad had adjusted to Dave a bit more (instead of trying to turn Dave into a funk guitarist) those two songs represent the type of style and level great music those four could’ve consistently made together. Re the unreleased JA song with Eric Avery - what’s the title of that track? I know JA finally recorded studio versions of “Whores” and “Chip Away” (which are both awesome) at Trent Reznor’s studio in the Hollywood Hills but is there another song???

Despite what we've all heard over the years, I think everyone could make a pretty good guess as to what happened between Dave and the band. What I don't like about RHCP post-One Hot Minute is how they seem to disown that album and may only rarely play anything from it. My guess is they feel like that album symbolizes a bad time in their life and they prefer to just forget about it, but there were some really great songs that came from it, so I'm sure John might not care much to play it but man...what a bummer.

And also it’s very hard when you do something on drugs especially playing music and go back to music sober it really hard to get back into it with out being high. Umm. Californication is perhaps the greatest comeback album in rock history. After One Hot Minute, the band was pretty much done. Look at the timeline: 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998: That’s 7 YEARS. During those 7 YEARS, the Chili Peppers only had ONE YEAR where they released a studio album with new material: 1995 One Hot Minute. Compare that to their previous output: they had releases in 1984 1985 1987 1989 1991: My point is this: From 1992 to 1998, the Chili Peppers were no longer a working, functioning band. Yes, in 1995, they released One Hot Minute, but that title is actually extremely APPROPRIATE: It was One Hot Minute. This was at The Height of Their Fame. How many Headlining Bands in Rock History have put out just ONE ALBUM in a 7-year period, and COMEBACK with their BIGGEST ALBUM? When Californication was released in 1999, after around 8 YEARS of almost ZERO OUTPUT, it was shocking. I remember when the first single was released, I think it was Scar Tissue, and thinking: “Is that The Chili Peppers?” because it had been YEARS and YEARS since I’d last heard them on the radio. John Frusciante’s return to the Peppers, and that huge comeback, has never been done before or since, and possibly will never happen again.

That being said, Dave Navarro is AMAZING. Three Days by Jane’s Addiction is one of the greatest songs ever made by any band ever, in my opinion. Pretty much every Jane’s Addiction song from their first 2 albums is great. If you listen to the Smashing Pumpkins album Gish, and the Gish b-sides from Pisces Iscariot, you can tell Corgan was a huge Jane’s Addiction fan.

I’m the biggest JA and Dave fan but I’ll be the first to say californication was better. OHM had amazing performances by chad Dave and flea. Anthony was a mess and it really showed for that record. Lyrics were a disaster in half the songs and his vocals were rough at best.

It's a hard choice, but yeah, One Hot Minute has some of the best guitar tracks. Challenge anyone to listen to Walkabout without air-guitaring. That said, you can't knock John after listening to Lyon 6.6.06

John Tremonti Frusciante is not overrated at all. Respect to Dave, but he could not bring the same magic. Nowhere near it.

Frusciante for sure is/was a better fit for the other RHCP members (as a person) ...but in terms of music (guitar playing) I prefer Navarro's style more. OHM is awesome (imo), the last RHCP album I really like. From Californication on I've lost my interest in their music...too poppy/nice/radio friendly/"commercial"...you know...when now very young (not even already teenage) girls listen to one of your once favorite bands....well...it's a strange unpleasant feeling. Just my opinion.

Frusciante deserves all the praise he gets. He's an amazing musician and so is Dave. All of it is a matter of preference at the end of the day.

One Hot Minute was, in my opinion, the last great Peppers album. Everything else has been good, but they lost that heavy edge after that one, and OHM was the heaviest.
