One of the most viewed videos I ever made was with Dave Rubin, host of “The Rubin Report.” This is my full, 30-minute interview with Rubin.
----
To make sure you see the new weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe
----
Dave Rubin used to be a leftist, but now he says progressives are “totalitarian.”
He’s been shouted down when he speaks on college campuses.
“They think I am a right-wing extremist,” Rubin tells me.
He’s lost friends for his political views.
But Rubin’s show is hugely popular.
He rightly recognized that people have an appetite for longer, in-depth interviews.
“If there were more people having honest conversation,” Rubin tells me, "we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in.”
I usually do shorter videos, Rubin is onto something.
Here’s our full, half-hour interview.

@johnmichael7983

Moving from liberal to progressive over a period of 40 years, then seeing the intolerance of the left - on full display for two years now - made no sense to me. Liberals were supposed to be "free to be you and me," but the progressives gradually became more authoritarian and have been trying to take over the Democrat party since. As stated in this interview, they will continue to turn on each other as they continue to "raise the bar" about what's acceptable and what's not. I wish you the best on your own journey of curiosity and truth.

Becoming a conservative is the rite of passage into adulthood that signifies your brain has gone through puberty. It does not necessarily happen at the same time as the rest of the body "matures," and sometimes a person doesn't live long enough for it to ever happen. There are senior citizens who are liberals and still living with an immature brain.

Robert Heinlein was a great Si-Fi writer and a noted Libertarian/libertarian (there is a difference) One of his quotes, that sticks with me when people begin with the Left/Right - Alt-Right/ Radical Leftist Identity Politics, is this: "Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire." And that seems to sum it up pretty succinctly - and what Rubin said at one point in this interview.

Yes John, while everyone loves the shorter edited version of these conversations, what we have learned over the years is that an edited conversation by definition leaves out tons of useful information about what actually took place. Take for instance the Leslie Stahl interview with trump from last October. It was an entirely different beast seeing the unedited conversation versus the edited one 60 minutes put out. My suggestion is that you do this for all of your one on one interviews because it gives a much more in-depth understanding of the person you’re speaking with. Great job as always!

There are many many many people who have been asleep their entire lives. They have never thought for themselves or dug deeper into a subject to fully understand the wide varieties of views on that topic. Then make up their mind. I have friends who are younger than me, and older than me, that I have tried to introduce them into thinking for themselves, not just following the narrative of what the "news" is spewing. Its painful to watch them implode and retreat into the echo chamber of the left's ideas. Then I am reminded, that even Jesus had issues with those that did not believe that he was The Son of God and The Son of Man. But He did not chastise them. He prayed for them and wished them well. I have come to accept that in my own life as well. I hope that Dave Rubin's point about the left is true. That they will eventually eat their own.

If life is all about defeating the "oppressors", there can be no true joy. You will forever be locked in the prison of victimhood, looking for allies to help you defeat your foes, both real and imagined. The biggest fear of the insecure is being proven to be wrong. This is true for the Left, the Right, and the Middle. Humble people relish the critiques of others. The logic of this insane assertion is that, to be correct, you must be willing to accept correction. The quest for absolute truth has been all but abandoned by those who embrace home-brewed "relative truths". "Activism", without a logical foundation, is nothing but an adult, or group of adults throwing a temper tantrum.

Rubin didn't know enough about reality to respond. (He isn't Edward Lawson(RIP) or Matthew Fogg.) Elder admitted to me that he was a libertarian in Illinois in 2002, when I pressed him on racist enforcement of the drug war and police legitimacy, because the drug war was then, and still is, selectively enforced against the poor and racial minorities. Note: "selectively" doesn't mean "exclusively." The statistical enforcement difference is _geopolitical_ and _classist_ more than it's racist, but the racial targeting component still exists. The prior are ideas too complex for them to address with sound-bites, though.

Yep. ESPECIALLY if the government enforced their rise to monopoly status. ESPECIALLY if they advertised themselves as being for free speech initially, and "changed the deal" later on. Such companies should be destroyed, and the Earth salted where they once stood. ...Not by the government, but by angry citizens whose rights have been violated. Someone may do me wrong, and there may not be a law against what they do, other than a general prohibition on fraud. But...if they violate the spirit and intent of America's laws, while serving the DEA, ONDCP, OCDETF, and BATFE while they so violate my rights...GAME ON, MOTHERFUCKERS! They deserve whatever they get. Unfortunately, they cannot be fairly regulated: regulation will just be further protection of their government-enforced monopoly. There's no valid answer in the current USSA, because the current USSA has no right to exist.

John Stossel keep doing what you’re doing! I can honestly say you had a huge impact on my own political awakening and I feel like I’m seeing things clearly for the first time in my life. It’s frustrating to observe the obscene level of bias in the mainstream media. We need much more fact based reporting. You’re up against a formidable beast…

We live in very sad times when we have to profile someone willing to have an honest debate about issues. Social media has created silos of hate. The woke industrial complex is a demagogic machine. That said, Dave seems very level headed and I just signed up to his podcast.

I live in San Francisco. When at work, I will occasionally say something that I think is obvious, but suddenly everyone gets quiet, or tense, or outright argumentative. When I try to reason with them (nicely), they absolutely refuse to hear it. It’s like trying to reason with a Jehovah’s Witness, or some other cult member. BTW, I was raised a JW.

Hey John. First, let me tell you I love your video. You are the calm and reason in a sea of chaos. But I agree with Rick... Quick stories and interviews have their place... but long form interviews are great, because it breaks through the "sound bite" mentality to fully express whole ideas. Thanks very much for your work.

Thank you again @JohnStossel for another great video. I watch Dave Rubin, and enjoy his content. More interviews like this John!! Bring on Joe Rogan, Larry Elder... and if they will accept your invite, some of the prominent lefties.... That would be fun.

I always enjoying hearing the awakening moment and how fast the prospective changes when that moment occurs. I think a lot of this comes from the anger and humility one gains from waking up. The realization that those who say they are on your side have been lying yo you and have been stopping your pursuit to happiness and the self realization that if you just get out of your own way. The freedom and success you've always wanted is literally sitting in front of you just waiting for you to pick it up and run with it.

unfortunately Ruth - some want no part of trying to come together - it's their way or you need to go away (and that's the most polite they'll be). there's only but a few examples in this video - any reasonable person should be appalled but they are often not exposed to what's going on or the truth of the situation because it doesn't serve their "narrative"

I keep hearing things that make me want to 'like', but I can only 'like' it once! There are at least a dozen *great* points made in this interview. Stossel lets Rubin speak after directing the conversation to specific areas. Lovely, brilliant, humane intellectual conversation.

I consider myself a (not HARD right) conservative, but I agree with a majority of what Dave and John espoused in this interview. There are some places where I disagree, of course, but I feel like if I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Dave or John, they we could air our disagreements respectfully - and that is something that is sadly missing in much of today's interactions.
