I have enjoyed this walk many times since 1964 and can add a little story about the valley shown right at the beginning which is a river of gold in winter and a bright green swamp, full of sundews, in summer. Living next to us in Dibden Purlieu was an elderly WW1 nurse who had been there since the 1930's and she told me that in summer people in Southampton used to bring their beehives to the edge of the valley which was covered in heather - no nasty pine plantations then. So locals called the valley "The Bee Garden". There are not many people know that story now. Robert Hull

Thanks so much for that extra information. It is always great to find out extra history about a place that otherwise would get lost in time. Thanks for watching.

I did this walk last weekend and Stonyford Pond is a delight; so remote feeling although so close to a built-up area. And no-one to share it with, which was bliss!

It is a lovely area - glad you enjoyed your walk. :)

Totally endorse your comments about Children of the New Forest Dave, particularly in its evocation of the forest and its remoteness from other parts of the country at that time. Some of the children's ingenuity and resourcefulness requires a measure of suspension of disbelief however!

Thanks John. It is one of those books where I can often imagine where some of the locations mentioned might be today!

Lovely relaxing watch, I know this area well, spent many hours with dogs and small children walking parts of this walk, real contrasts between woodland, marshy ground with ponds and traditional New Forest heath.. Thanks.

A favourite local walk we've done many times. Never gets too busy even when the tourist hot spots in the Forest are heaving with visitors, but let's keep that to ourselves shall we! Didn't know about the WW2 decoys though, - you learn something new every day. Many thanks

Thank you Angela. It is certainly a pretty part of the Forest.

Hello Dave, hope you and Logan are well. I love your videos, great views of some wonderful walks. The little pond and bridge at 17:31 is roughly the area where there was forest fire around 1979.

Thank you Mark for your kind comment and indeed the information about the fire.

Great video Dave and Logan right on my doorstep so interesting to hear of the sites used in the Second World War you were so close to the site on an old gun emplacement which was located on the edge of Holbury near the old landfill site.

Thank you. Yes .... there is so much interesting WW2 history around that part of the New Forest.

Lovely walk Dave. Although you said it wasn’t in the Forest, it could have been to the visitor. There were some fantastic cloud formations at times, which always add to a landscape picture.
@DaveFord3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did notice those clouds. The weather was a bit changeable at times on that walk as well.

Rode through a lot of your route yesterday (30th Aug) it is a lovely part of the forest. The first pond you walked past we came across a couple trying to get their golden retriever to come out of the water. He was plastered when he eventually came out. Dogs!!!

I must admit, I tend to restrict Logan's "water exploits" to paddling in nice clear chalk stream rivers!

Another fabulous & educational walk Dave & Logan! Logan is such a smart boy pointing out the items you mention as you go!😂 The little foal was so cute!😍 Did you have to wait for them to move on, or change your course? Btw...glad the jogger didn't nick the camera!!!😅
@DaveFord4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The foal & mare moved on so we were OK. I didn't notice the jogger until I got back and did the editing...it looked like he changed course to take a closer peek at the camera! It has been over 35 years since I set my 400M "personal best" so I doubt I would have caught him if he had picked it up!
