The soft pistol gets coated very quickly but it also feels like powder in the hand.

The pastelmat surface I work on grabs the pigment with the result of almost zero dust... so no probs. 🙏

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing. I do portraits but am struggling with pastels. How do you work on larger piece, without smudging it. I get in a right mess! :D

Thank you... you are welcome Alison... I would recommend Pastelmat or any sanded surface, the pigment clings to the surface so if doesn't smudge so easily... For the details I often use a Mahl stick to lean on or Glassine paper. All the very best. 🙏

I have very little experience using pastel pencils. Do you feel that it is a real necessity to use multiple brands of pencils?

Hi Ronald, You can achieve similar results just use one brand... I like the subtle difference in vibrancy some brand have... also lightfastness is important as some colours of a brand might need substituting for a better longevity.
