Barnes, Rush and Beardsley, what a front 3. Loved watching Barnes. His first touch was class. Had an amazing left foot, but his right foot was pretty good as well!

I was at this Wembley game, of course it was just months after Michael Thomas goal "it's up for grabs" at Anfield. Liverpool won the league 89/90. Their last. I remember sitting with the Arsenal fans having a good go at the Scousers even though we lost. Sad and great to see Rocky Rocastle here, I forget he was in the lineup. A great 80's rivalry.

@@lfcspectre4335 He certainly had the Brazilian touch didn't he? Brazil could have used him because they were rubbish in the late 80s...

I was there that day, approaching my 19th birthday that month. Was sweet revenge for losing the league title on the final day decider.

Liverpool had knocked Arsenal out of the league cup the previous season, so Arsenal winning the league at Anfield was their revenge and settled the score

Liverpool were the better footballing team, and should have won a few more titles/cups under Kenny Dalglish.

Aldridge scored 60 goals in two seasons and was on the bench. OK give him a rest but really Liverpool never needed Ian Rush. I know this may sound unpopular but I didn't want him to re sign for the club.
@DaveWallerLFC3 жыл бұрын
If you take out penalties, Aldridge's goal figures are a lot less impressive. 16 league goals from open play in 1987/88 in a brilliant, attacking team built to his strengths isn't that great, particularly as Rush scored 30 the year before in a weaker team. Aldridge was a good player but Rush was better and younger, so it made sense to bring him back. If we hadn't, he would probably have gone to another English club and strengthened them against us.
@waz312811 ай бұрын
@@DaveWallerLFC I'm sure he scored way more than Rush over the following 5 or 6 years at Sociedad and Tranmere. Rush only had 2 more decent seasons left in him after this one
@DaveWallerLFC11 ай бұрын
I don't think you can compare Aldridge's goals in the 2nd tier at Tranmere to Rush playing in the top flight. If you're applying hindsight to the decision, Rush's injuries make it less clear cut, but in 88 and 89 when the decisions were made to buy Rush and sell Aldridge they were the right decisions. Over their careers, Rush was clearly the better player. Why else didn't a big club come in for Aldridge until 87?
@markreville69173 ай бұрын
Ian Rush was a world class striker. John Aldridge was a decent enough English first division standard striker. What about all those goals, you ask ? Jimmy Tarbuck would have scored thirty a season playing for that team, they were that good.

I was at the game and I believe Hysen was man of the match. Liverpool should have bought Paul McGrath instead at that time.
