That second goal is a gem! both the build up and the finish. Barnes and Beardsley will always be two of my favorite Liverpool players of all time. It's so hard to imagine that exactly a year later in the same fixture against the same opposition at the same venue that things could go so horribly wrong. It's still hard to take in even all these years later and you can't help thinking about it when you watch this.

We actually underestimate just how good John Barnes was. I can imagine in my parents generation how much of a joy it was to watch him play

If not for 1985 that Liverpool team from 86 to 90 would have added a couple more European Cups fabulous side and I'm a Leeds fan but appreciate great footballing sides

Yes I think we would have won at least 1 more during that period but it wasn't to be. BTW really hope you guys finally get promoted this season & come back to the Premier League, Leeds imo are a club that belong in the top division & have been gone for far too long. Talking about great footballing sides you lot had one hell of a great side back in the days of Bremner, Gray, Giles, Lorimer etc. Brilliant team.

definitely possible. an average Barca and Steau contested the 86' final so reckon everton would have won it that year. 87 and 88 were also seasons where you would have backed the English side over who eventually won it and made the final. 89-90 Milan were on another level but if anyone could have beaten them it was this Liverpool team.

Yes I agree if liverpool didn't get banned they wud have won atleast 1 European Cup between 1985 to 1990 all because of Barnes 😊

great videos these i support Leeds but really enjoy the old Liverpool games from the 70s and 80s what a team. My old man was at Hillsborough in 1987 watching Leeds v Coventry had to climb out to the side pens it was that packed. Never listened to any of the complaints lodged we all know what happened in 89 😪😪

I am sat in the dark in a hotel room with my family back in Liverpool the place I love watching this been here when this was played so cheers and the game may not have been home but seeing it now makes it feel like it

I've always been astounded as to why in the era of new stadiums and stands that the Leppings Lane end wasn't demolished and rebuilt

Why should it be? It’s the police that fucked things up, got nothing to do with the stand or terracing for that matter

Nothing to do with the stand that has had numerous crushing incidents before and after the disaster (most recently Newcastle cup game this year, leading to a capacity reduction)? The layout and number of turnstiles and the access points into the terrace were significant contributory factors, along with police failures.

@johnwalters4792 I totally agree but Sheffield Wednesday have put money over safety before so I doubt they're going to knock it down at this stage.

I remember being fed-up that BBC radio 2 had commentary from the Grand National while this was being played. We didn't have teletext, so apart from brief updates, no coverage!

Me too. Front row of the Leppings Lane end upper tier stand - directly behind the goal. Was on the TV for that night's Match Of The Day when they panned around before the game kicked-off. We were all on our feet singing our hearts out. Stood in the same end, the following year. Thankfully in the next pen to the crush. I was stood on the segregation fence between the pens until 2.50pm. I had a great view of the pitch over the top of the fencing, but jumped down before the teams came out, as too many poor bastards were climbing into our pen in front of me to escape. That middle pen was rammed at 2pm. You can play football and freely walk around in our pen leading up to kick-off.
