There was a guy near me who had a music store. He was a bass player. One day I was asking if he had any 10 gauge acoustic guitar strings. He said,"Why do want such light strings on an acoustic?" I said, " I play leads on my acoustic and I bend strings". He says, "You bend strings on an acoustic guitar? I've never heard of that!" I thought that was strange. This guy did guitar repair for many music stores in the area. He would drive around and pick the guitars up, work on them and take them back, that sort of deal. I bet most of the customers thought the work was being done on site. One thing that he told me that stuck with me was that he did tons of refret jobs on guitars that didn't need them because that's what the customers insisted on. Like all of the small music stores in my area, this store went out of business. When the big box chains moved in. Two guys tried to start it up as a music store but got busted for selling white medicine powder out of the store. That's my weird music store story for the day!

I had a fret job done on guitar with good frets because they were small frets and I like big frets on my guitars so sometimes that's a legit reason, but I think I know what you are saying.

Interesting about the lighter guage acoustic strings. I play lead on my acoustic and went from 11s to 12s. Just prefer the sound and feel.

Love Gibson's but wish they'd ditch the binding "nibs" over the fret ends. Would prefer that the top of the fret ends go over the binding giving wider fret playing area, but, based on sales and the reaction to the modern, non-traditional designs and features, I'm in the minority.

Dave on that era Gibson guitars the date can be found by reading the 1st and 5th number of the serial number. It corresponds to the last 2 numbers of the year. Example 93415008 would be a 1995 guitar.

My frets always get like that. Get them leveled and crowned etc and they look like that again in a few months. I am thinking of going stainless frets next time. p.s. I am a Kiwi. Two years living in Windsor and I can hear the difference in accents either side of the border now. Easy to pick it 'out' now :)

I bought a 1975 Stratocaster for relatively little money in the late '90s and I think it was cheap because the bullet truss rod nut looked factory fresh and unmolested whilst every single fret had been filed or not to a greater or lesser degree - some looked like the pics you see of "fretless wonder" frets (un-reprofiled of course) some had the look of regularish Gibson and some high frets looked quite Fenderish. It seems that someone had done a bespoke fret job like no other because they either didn't understand how truss rods work or.....well I don't know. It actually played rather nicely and sounded great apart from the bridge pup which was a bit spikey. I swapped it with some money for a 1962 Les Paul Junior and last saw it in Chandlers in Kew (just before they closed down) priced at x7 what I paid 15 years before. Funny old world indeed

Boy you really don't notice how extreme the angle on a les Paul headstock is until your looking down the length with it in the block like the last minute or so when Dave is trimming strings, is there a reason Gibson made it that way and has never changed it, for tuning, or tone or something?

YDDDYBPPP is the Gibson serial number thingie since (I think) 2014? 100191001 would be the first guitar produced assuming it was made Jan 1 The 2 Ys are the first and second digit of the year (not including the 20 in 2019) The 3 Ds are the day of production The B is Batch number (Usually a 0 or 1) The P is the Production Number Maybe this is common knowledge but I thought it was cool

Is that truss nut maybe zinc/'zamac'/pot metal? I would think stainless, in addition to maybe breaking the rod, would also be super prone to seizing/galling, so much so that it would be somewhat improbable that it hadn't already.

Just write him a mail, make well lid pictures of how "out of shape" it is and you'll get your quote. Show closeups of the frets, the nut, the strings across the bridge and describe your problems. Who could tell by your comment?

Hey Dave - I have a 20141 Les Paul that some IDIOT "tried" to refinish. In so doing he sanded the edge of the fret board on the Treble side to the point that all you can really feel is the ends of the frets themself! I have filed and sanded the edges as smooth as I can get them but the edge of the fret board is already so close to the high E that I am afraid to take the ends of the frets back any further. Any suggestions on how to "add" to that side of the fret board? I thought about attempting to put some binding there but I have never done that type of work before. A friend told me the only way to fix it is to put a new fret board on it. You got any ideas? Thanks!

tell us dave, how much is it to send a guitar from the states to you for repair. I ship guitars in the us and its like 99 bucks to fedex a les paul in the states, but to you in Canada it would be double then custom fees then all that back to the US so id say 400 bucks shipping both ways.. then your fee which I know is worth every penny. so we are looking 750 total to have you fix a les paul. am I right here I cant be off much

Humbuckers don't pull at the strings in the same way as single coils do. You have two opposing magnetic fields, side by side. One side 'pulls' and the other 'pushes.' That's how humbuckers 'kill' the hum.
