The Thames-pronunciation is a result of Received Pronunciation, i.e. the rule that the King's English is The Correct Way. Enter a dimwitted German prince in the early 18th century, who couldn't wrap his tongue around the "teeaitch" and who pronounced "Thames", nee Tamesis, which was pronounced up to that point according to English spelling, as "de Temse" (German pronunciation). The courtiers followed suit, of course, not to embarrass said dim prince...

That seems like a folk etymology. At one point (~1700) it was a long version of the vowel in "head", which in most words became the vowel in name, but instead of doing that in Thames it shortened to just the vowel in head because it was a commonly used word. At least thats my guess based on the great vowel shift.

19:24 - “They want a parallel legal system for the religious laws. Not to replace civil law.” Sure. That’s a very charitable and nice take, and there is a very minor element of this in practice in the UK. It certainly doesn’t supersede civil law. Except for the part where the religious law can undermine inheritance matters for women. In the UK, it’s to their fortune that they can revert to civil law if some religious ruling does go against their interests - though many also fail to on account of community pressure and not being too well versed on their rights within broader society - but this is precisely why having a retrograde parallel religious system, even in a restricted form, is quite problematic because it can force a kind of societal segregation and disconnect for those who might benefit from knowing that they have options outside that framework. One can be agreeable and considerate towards Muslims and work towards their integration without alienating them, but also without assimilating the problematic aspects of the religious system. Otherwise, based take on how problematic religious ideologies should be called out.

Thoughtful comment, but how are you going to stop people from being bound by the rulings of a court they have voluntarily agreed to be bound to?
@ordohereticus3427
@ordohereticus3427 2 жыл бұрын
@@pragueuprising560 That's a good question. Perhaps there should be a very selective approach to even having parallel legal systems? This also raises another question. Is an individual, raised from childhood in an environment where they are conditioned to believe they have a lesser standing than others with little concept of rights or options outside that framework, really a willing and informed volunteer to such an arrangement? Not really. That said, there are activists trying to get women in such communities better informed about their rights and options outside such religious rulings, some of them even made by completely unregulated courts run entirely by their own local clerics, often making unlawful rulings and demands on others, and not recognised under English law. In fact, one of the arguments in favour of assimilating some purely money-related aspects of Sharia law as part of English law (but not to supersede civil law), was centred around being able to better regulate the concept and to prevent its problematic elements from emerging. This aim included taking away the appeal of these underground/segregated community courts that generally operate entirely outside the law, making declarations on matters far more complex than just taxation and charity, and seeing those decisions get forced on certain people within the community, often women. It’s not clear how well this strategy has worked thus far because such courts still exist and their problematic outcomes remain. Also, the whole point Vaush made here was in response to someone arguing that many Muslims desire Sharia law, and this was in relation to polling data, with Vaush's counter argument being that his perusal of the polling data indicated that they simply wanted a mild version of Sharia that doesn't override civil law. However, I don't think that's entirely accurate when it comes to such figures in countries like the UK. Some of the polling found that a sizeable number don't just want some minor Sharia for, say, how much money they want taken out for religious charity, but rather, they want the pursuit of some fairly retrograde ideas, such as homosexuality being made illegal. Of course, the polling methodology and data itself could be scrutinised further, but as far as the face value findings are concerned, it wasn't just a case of some Muslims wanting a largely softened and minor form of Sharia.
@carl8790

Excuse me for my ignorance, but isn't the UK ruled by secular law? Allowing Muslims to practice their religion peacefully, allowing Muslim women and men to wear traditional clothes are great steps to inclusion, but what's the limit? Is Sharia Law welcome and should override secular law?
@ordohereticus3427
@ordohereticus3427 2 жыл бұрын
@@carl8790 You are correct in general about UK law. Muslims are more than allowed to practice their religion peacefully. The UK has taken some official steps towards accommodating some aspects of Sharia arbitration when it comes to certain matters such as commercial, taxation and charity deductions. This accommodation doesn’t supersede UK law and must operate within said framework. However, underground/unsanctioned/legally unrecognised Sharia courts do exist. So too do their problematic rulings and consequences on many women. You can do a basic cursory search on this topic. Of course, there are various groups also trying to address these and help those who become victimised by such courts.

24:25 Roman mythology was extremely pro homosexuality and bisexuality. As such the first 13 Roman emperors were bisexual or homosexual openly. The 14th was considered kind of weird for being straight. Then christianity came along and coincidentally society started becoming extremely homophobic with little difference in economic conditions between high middle ages europe and classical era europe? We arent even to a place where bisexuality is fully normalized and we have global trade, public schooling and modern welfare states. But i am sure it has nothing to do with how christianity and islam demands the death penalty for homosexuals while many roman gods were literally LGBT.

We shouldn’t talk using terms like “bi” or “straight” or “homosexual” because there was technically no such thing in that society’s conception of sexuality (it’s a bit more complex than that but I just want to illustrate how irrelevant those terms are tbh) Basically we shouldn’t analyse an ancient era using explicitly modern conceptions of things - it’s the same reason why we shouldn’t talk about the Spartan economy in Marxist terms: it might be interesting once you’ve smoked a joint but it’s completely irrelevant to the era you’re analysing if you’re trying to be serious

We as leftist should denounce Islamist radicals who commit terrorist attacks HOWEVER, We also shouldn't let our message afterwards redound to islam or religion as a whole is bad. There are many ways we as leftist can talk about these topics, for example, Corbyn after the London terrorist attacks. Many took to simply denouncing the attack or showing of compassion for those died and those who survived but Corbyn did way more then that. In the aftermath, he made solid critiques of the conservative government and western imperialism in its wake. He pointed out that underfunding of the police through austerity hindered the response to the attack and also that the men's hard turn to radical Islam was in part due to there past as middle eastern immigrants who came from nations that we as the west plundered and destroyed in the war's like the Iraq war. This messaging wasn't just based, it helped Corbyn in the election of 2017. I saw many videos of British voters who at first hated Corbyn but soon turned to him as his message around the attack convinced many around his message of anti neoliberalism and anti impearlism. Mad lad Corbyn, the only leftist to GAIN votes after a terror attack In total, don't be a zero, be a anti imperialist. Hugs and kisses :)

Ignorant of French culture and the very complex and highly left wing history of Charlie Hebdo as dry satire. Edit: Also, David Amess wasn’t horrible in any exceptional sense. He was little more than a pro Brexit social conservative who also happened to be sympathetic to the needs of his constituents, many of them of foreign ancestry. He was also opposed to animal cruelty and fox hunting, the latter being quite important to the typical Tory snob. Not a terrible person by a decent margin.

Hard disagree on religious text not strongly influencing religious people that much. Yeah there can be nationalist or fascist tendencies in any group, but religious texts give people bad ideas and train them not to question religious authority. There are many type of Christianity because some ignore the Bible more than others, and most selectively ignore things due to how much of a contradictory mess the entire book is collectively. Most of the bad ideas from religious groups come from their texts though, and most religious conflicts from religions without major issues in their dogma come from longstanding ethnic conflicts over land or resources, or just xenophobia. The latter seems to be a pretty strong trend in religion-themed nationalist groups associated with Hinduism or Buddhism.

I really have to hard disagree on the takes on religious law courts. This is a VERY bad direction, regardless of the religion. This should not be equated to whatever social consequences already exist in religious communities for religious indiscretions. I don't think these polls said "with no actual authority or ability to enforce anything" as a caveat to wanting to see more religious law implemented. Religious courts and religious law mean religious law enforcement unless you're talking about maybe internal disputes within churches and among clergy. Let's not go full Sam Harris and make this a race thing, but there are some seriously fucked up attitudes among some religious groups in some places, and many of them could or would be imposed on people who didn't really consent to them if their practitioners got their way.

No, it's not. This is ONLY about minor civil cases, which in these cases aren't even decided by judges in the "normal" legal system, but rather by mediators (who are usually lawyers or something like that by trade). They simply want the ability to use their own mediators who will rule based on religious law. This is NOT about them trying to evade or undermine the actual legal system. This only involves cases like disputes among neighbors etc, that would be too minor to bother actual courts anyways.

Also, there was a lot of hand wringing and condemnation of the 'highly charged, confrontational and entrenched' nature of recent British politics. But Amess was part of the bloc that has been stoking those fires for at least 5 years (almost certainly longer, but 2016 was when it started to get bad) so there's something of a 'reap what you sow' sentiment at play. Now it's certainly not good that he was killed, but he doesn't deserve the excessive hagiography he's received over the last week imo. It's also slightly disgusting that the Tories are getting all worked up about MP safety now, but not when the Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered in 2016 by an explicit right wing reactionary during the EU referendum campaign. Back then it was all 'nobody should politicise this' (which is inherently bullshit you can't 'politicise' an already politically motivated murder, and the remain side going along with it was bloody stupid). But now a Tory, one of their own, has been on the receiving end suddenly they're all so scared for their safety that action is required.

@darthozlord

Unfortunately it’s because of a decade of different Conservative governments going further and further to the right with each election we’ve had in the last decade. The first one was in 2010 because of the 2008 recession, but even then it was a Hung Parliament and the Liberal Democrat party came in to give them the seats and claimed they’d “Hold the Tories back on their stricter policies”. That was a blatant lie cause the leader then just gave up and went back in his promises completely. The second was David Cameron’s second term, but was also the one where he promised the EU referendum, excepting people not to care only for his mate Boris Johnson (who he propped up for Mayor of London some years back) to stab him in the back and go full charge on backing Brexit. Combine that with UKIP leader and Populist Nigel Farage, and the pro-EU side (both Left and Right leaning) being boring and not specific enough) Vote Leave won and Cameron fucked off soon after. This lead to Theresa May coming in as PM, who wasn’t great but managed to just win a snap election against Labour anyway. That was also a coalition government, one with a right-wing Northern Irish Unionist party. May negotiated deal after deal, each one getting rejected by Parliament three times. Eventually, she had to resign because she too couldn’t get it done. Which leads to Boris now.
