I live in Arizona, and while we get most of the s**t for living in a place susceptible to climate change, the problem is everywhere is going to be susceptible to climate change. You’re not safe because you live somewhere humid or near a body of water. Eventually that body of water is going to swallow your entire neighborhood, or your entire city. Tornadoes, hurricanes and even your typical thunderstorms will be become a lot more common and more destructive. We here in the desert might experience the worst of climate change ahead of time, but no place is safe.

Yes, completely agreed. This scares the shit out of me. So many people here (southern part of the Netherlands) are like, oh climate change won't affect us, we'll get the pleasant climate that currently we have to go to Southern Germany/Northern France for, and since we're in the South we won't be at risk of flooding. In Phoenix we heavily rely on air conditioning to exist out here, but I say that with privilege knowing there’s a lot of people who can’t afford to keep it all that cool or are unhoused altogether and struggle to find air conditioning. (The city sets up cooling stations to help though.) My long distance bf in NYC takes showers to cool off in summer…it took me a while to realize the water was running cold for him. In Phoenix the water runs warm in summer because it’s coming from outdoor pipes. Laying down on a tile floor in air conditioning gets the job done real quick for me. But I gotta run now bc I want to do some work outside while it’s only 90 F before the sun rises 🫠

All these storms and heat and lightning and hurricanes have caused very public and dramatic exits of insurance companies from Florida citing unprofitability due to climate concerns which in turn lead to vast numbers of Florida homesteads to become either uninsurable or hilariously expensive to insure/get a mortgage for but clearly the real cause of soaring Florida real estate and rent costs is because insurance companies are 'woke' (i.e., aware that their profit margins are vanishing fast due to regular disasters).

I know this will come off as incredibly nerdy, but sweating is actually a really cool mechanism. Without going too in-depth, think of water as like a battery that stores heat instead of electricity. Water can store a lot more heat than the human body can, so even small droplets of sweat can store a lot of heat, and when they store enough heat they evaporate into water vapour and carry that heat away with them, removing it from your body. The reason why very high temperature and very high humidity is such a dangerous combo is that it means the air is already at max water capacity, meaning there isn't enough room for your sweat to evaporate into. This leads to the sweat just staying on your skin, hence the heat can't escape from your body and you can't cool down. But because the body is still too hot it keeps sweating, so it ends up dehydrating itself.

The thing I find most annoying about the climate discussion is that we are often tasked with doing things to reduce our personal carbon footprint (turn off lightbulbs, buy electric cars, stop eating meat, etc.), yet there's no incentive to reduce the emissions of oil and coal companies that are overwhelmingly responsible for carbon emissions, so long as they bring in billions of dollars.

The wet bulb temperature is the temperature of a thermometer (bulb, because of the design of old tstats) when covered in water (though not submerged, just wet. . That's all it is. How cool is the tstst when water is evaporating from it. It's useful for talking about human survivability because we sweat. The wet bulb temp for human survivability is about 95f.

One good way to put it is that wet bulb temperature basically occurs when the humidity is so high that condensation and evaporation are more or less equal. Evaporation works because it is an endothermic reaction, it _absorbs_ heat. In order for sweat to evaporate it requires energy which it takes from your skin and body. When humidity is too high though, condensation is much more likely to occur and condensation is an exothermic reaction that _produces_ heat. Combine the two and you get wet bulb temperatures. This is of course a bit of a misnomer as condensation doesn't actually occur during wet bulb temperatures but I find that the imagery this explanation invokes is very useful for explaining wet bulb temperatures. Basically, your body wants water to evaporate to get rid of heat but the air wants water to condense. The two effects cancel out so the heat gets trapped in your body instead.
@cursedGalataea
@cursedGalataea Жыл бұрын
Just think of it as, water always condenses on the coldest surface in the area, which in +40°C weather is probably your body struggling to keep itself cool enough to function. Fun fact, if there's enough water in the air you will also drown from the water condensing on your lungs

Just want to point out one thing that's been kind of annoying me that Vaush has been saying for a little bit now: wet-bulb temperature is not a specific temperature. The point at which the human body cannot cool itself is not called "the wet-bulb temperature" or "wet-bulb temperature." Wet-bulb temperature refers to the temperature when a thermometer is read with a water-soaked cloth wrapped around the bulb, with the water at ambient temperature (hence the name). What Vaush refers to here and in other videos is the wet-bulb temperature at which the combination of heat and humidity makes the human body incapable of cooling itself by sweating, eventually leading to, without external cooling, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and death, i.e. it is the combination of heat and humidity at which human life is not sustainable without external cooling. IIRC that wet-bulb temperature is around 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

I think you completely got the "wet bulb temperature wrong" it isn't a particular temperature it's a particular way of measuring it. You are measuring the temperature of a bulb that is covered in water. If humidity is really low the evaporation of this water cools the bulb and makes the temperature slightly lower and represents how your body sweating can do the same, but higher humidity makes this evaporation (and your bodies ability to cool itself) less effective. A wet bulb Tempe of 32C 90F is the limit humans can cool themselves long-term and is the limit that Vaush is thinking of. Once you reach this even heat adapted people are making more heat than they can get rid of and will eventually overheat and die.

We need more than green jobs and all that crap at this point. We need people to limit their consumption massively to get a year on year decrease like we had under covid. We need to phase out gas and oil now. The process needs to be active. Fraid to say everyone needs to go vegan now as animal agriculture is a massive part of the problem. We use way too much land to grow crops to feed to a frickin cow just so we can eat it. We need insulation in our homes and regulation on how much carbon we can use. The main issue though is growth. We either have to get rid of the idea of perpetual growth, link it to non extractive processes or do something else. Overall capitalism isnt great for this purpose. If people are super wedded to it then it is possible with regulation to make it work just about but its not the right tool for this process
@tsharabrown3719

@jameswarren2222
@jameswarren2222 Жыл бұрын
@@tsharabrown3719 absolutely true though a lot of what is being produced is because we buy it. I guess there's two issues, we need to remove consumption and remove waste from production. We need to do that whilst not crashing the economy because everything relies on consumption. We do that most easily through regulation that in itself create jobs that are non extractive. I'm not in to carbon credits that can be offset as that is basically green washing. I'd quite like a system where everyone has carbon limits so you can get a set allocation of carbon credits you can use and if you're rich and want to use more then tough shit. You can use your money in non extractive ways. For example you might want a holiday abroad and to buy a new car, well that's going to eat into your carbon allowance so you need to start saving elsewhere by installing solar and cutting down on buying clothes for example. If you have loads of money, maybe you spend it on training or experiences or virtual services. It's kind of limiting everyone to certain limits so the right, liberals, libertarians and pretty much everyone would hate it but you know what, it's fair. No nobhead has a right to drive a hummer, heat a pool and fly everywhere when it's directly fucking over everyone else.
