The UDSSR is not the only reason east Germany is very poor. After the reunion the region got fucked. They basically got sold out (or even literally gifted to west germans). The region got sucked dry. There is a lot of resentment and that's why it's so highly polarized politically.

And because those poor regions tend to be extremely far right, a lot of the progressive, better educated young people move away and into the west. It's sort of a vicious cycle. Then there's also the west having resentment toward the east, because the east is subsidized by a specific tax on the west (Solidaritätszuschlag), and also because of those far right politics. It's pretty fucked, tbh. But that's what happens when you divide up a country, it's honestly still just that post-WW2 thing having echos to this day.

Well, like always: it's complicated. The USSR had some direct effects, especially during the occupation. They took - in accordance to the Potsdam Agreements - a lot of th heavy industry away as reparations. The USSR took the most damage during the war and East Germany was never really an area with a lot industry... so it was already not much industry there and they took a lot as reparations. But there were also other reasons. For example the fact that East Germany was basically looted again after the re-unification of Germany, the keyword here is "Treuhandanstalt".

There is one thing to add though: Die Linke may be legal successor of the east german ruling party, but they are no way the same in terms of ideology. The renaming after the fall of communist germany was not only an affort to rebrand, but an internal revolt, where democratic socialist reformists took control and excluded the old leadership. The last diehard tankies left the party over time and reorganized in the DKP (German Communist Party) and the MLPD (Marxist-Lenininst Party of Germany).

Parties on the flanks tend to suffer when the election is very competitive among more centrist parties, which is what happened this year. It was very close between the Social Democrat SPD and the Christian Democrat CDU/CSU. This meant that people who would usually support more progressive parties like die Grune and die Linke instead voted for the SPD in an effort to get them to be the largest party. This puts the SPD in a better position going into coalition negotiations. As the biggest party, they're expected to take the initiative, and will most likely head the resulting government. As far as people moving from die Linke to AfD are concerned, they're probably mostly people who aren't very engaged in politics. Wouldn't surprise me if the wellness crowd makes up a sizable chunk of that shift.

If the race between CDU/CSU and SPD hadn't been as close as it was, die Grüne would probably have taken a bigger chunk of the vote from the SPD, but that's an argument based on a counterfactual.

I always thought that it is such a stupid point to call die Linke the direkt followup to the SED. Former SED Members were joining every party. Especially the CDU took in many former Partymembers. The problem the Linke faces is that in eastern germany, the AFD gets most of there votes. Same counts for die Linke. Die Linke is very progressive which drew alot of votes to the AFD, especially since 2015.

sorry for my bad english, but "Die Linke" is named in Austria KPÖ (Kommunistische Partei Österreichs!), and turned on the same day as the Bundestagswahl in Germany with almost 30% to the greatest party in Graz, the secondgreatest city in Austria. So you can see, there are a lot of different trends and reasons, because parties can grow up or fall down. In Germany was the concentration about three candidates (triells in a lot of talkshows) and taktical ideas the reason of the down for the left party.

Die Linke is not so much stalinist or old school communist. The small party "MLPD" fits that bill far more.

One-party political systems of every description (modern Japan, the USSR, Singapore, etc.) are often described as 'conservative' because they, by definition, contain both the left and right wings within a single party. It would be stranger if right-wing Stalinists didn't exist. They're just very rare.
