I'll just hijack this almost-top comment to tell non-germans: it got worse. many of the worst offenders (including Wagenknecht) left Die Linke to found their own party: BSW, which is the abbreviation for "Alliance Sarah Wagenknecht" (this hints towards the fact they dont have any consistent ideology besides whatever she believes in) while Die Linke still has some problematic positions concerning Russia, it got a lot better, but they also lost a *lot* of support because most of their votes were apparently coming from the nationalistic populism that came from that same part of the party, whereas BSW looks like it'll be a comparable force to the AfD in its first election next year (both in terms of its ideology and its strength)

The average German Die Linke voter doesn't know or care about that, Die Linke lost so much not because of just one reason but many, the voter did not want another CDU chancellor for the next 4 years and voted for SPD, and the internal party disputes did not help either, for example, Wagenknecht criticized her own party more than she criticized others, for example, grew her fame by talking about "Lifestyle Linke" whatever that means, and distracted possible voters from the true goals of her own party, that's all the party was famous for anymore, their internal disputes, and so on.

Sorry, but as much as I like Adam Somethings content, I have to disagree. Full diclosure: I am german, 21 and I voted die Linke in the last election (on my second vote, which is the one that matters). The things he discribes inside of the party do exist, but not to such a degree. Many do not fully understand that die Linke isn't a monolith, it unites many different opinions, and a huge majority of party members dislike russia and china. The opposition to the nato stems from the basic idea that in a modern society, international conflict shouldn't be primarily US centric, which the Nato is. But the biggest problem I have with this video is a complete mischaracterisation of the discourse in germany. Most policital discourse here is not about Russia, Assad and so on, but majorly just "Innenpolitik", national politics, like Digitalisation, workers rights, renewable energies, recently the legaisation of cannabis is discussed a lot, and housing, poverty, identity politics and so on. Those issues are all wayyyy more important than russia to germans, and die Linke has pretty based opinions on all of them. Actually, die Linke is pretty comaprable to Bernie Sanders: Pretty based, sometimes a bit too traditional in its effort to actually do politics, and some nieche views may be seen as problematic, but they do not matter at all in the whole political context. Actually there was one women in the party that used to oppose the identitypolitics and wanted to get way closer with russia, Sarah Wagenknecht, she was basically the closest you could get to a Nazbol offline, and she got voted out of the party. Also, classifying Bündnis 90/die grünen (the green party) as a leftist party is just plain out wrong. They are a liberal party with some good stances, but overall they are capitalistic and in no way oppose the rich and wealthy in germany, as can be seen in the new papers about which policies the new government out of the workers party SPD, the green party and the neoliberals will hold. Taxing the rich was off table before the Koalitionsnegotiation even started. They are pretty based on IDpol and overall tend to be a bit more leftleaning than the SPD, but they are by no means leftists. Thats also the reason that there are so many different opinions inside of die Linke, it is the only leftists party that has a chance to get into the parlament, so anarchists and MLs vote for it. Taking it as one Tankie party is reductive...

While I do agree with your overall point that Die Linke can't be only classified as an "pro russia nazbol party" there are some points where you're wrong. Sarah Wagenknecht is one of the co-founders of the party and is in my eyes one of the most recognizable party members due to her populist nazbol takes. Some disbcribe her audience as "conservative leftists" but honestly it mostly consists of a bunch of boomers which tend to wanna have a better welfare state (which is fine on it's own, but she wants to throw every other leftist group under the bus for them). She also hasn't been voted out, a huge chunk of the party supported her stay, which shows one issue with them. The policies of Die Linke do be mostly pretty based. Again, like you said good takes on housing, taxation, equity and so on. Though again, the party members are kind of inconsistent really about all of this and the party seems to be far too much splattered in tiny fractions, which makes it hard to advocate for them. The last criticisms I have to make on their view of the DDR/GDR (German Democratic Republic). Sometimes they simp for the old state which basically just makes them look like Soviet apologists. Their takes on East Germany after 1990/91 are pretty okay of course, but the nostalgia for that regime comes sometimes up too much. (Though most SED bureaucrats went to the CDU after the fall of East Germany, to be clear.) I partially dislike die Linke, but still voted for them in the election. The party basically has to decide a new course from here and I hope they don't go the "we oppose everything western"- route. Also, you're totally correct about the greens being a lib party. Though they stand for pretty good social policy through their feminist roots and can argue for pretty progressive stuff. It's just like you said they lean economically more capitalist then everything.
@enmysigmaquadrat94642 жыл бұрын
@@via9471 Yeah, I guess you are right about most of this. While I didn't percieve the support for Wagenknecht as so overwhelming, that just might be my bubble. The DDR stuff I am kind of split on, because on one side there is the horrible past of eastern germany, and some of this Ostalgie stuff is really cringe, but I also believe that there is a certain bias to paint a black and white picture in german discourse of the past, this typical DDR bad, BRD good stuff should be questioned. There were a few good things we could learn from the DDR past. of cause, simping for russia is wrong and cringe, but simping for the west is just as well. But as you said, just opposing everything western is not the way. Leftism was always based(.) in reason and learning from the material conditions we experienced in the past. We shouldn't waste this data we have, instead we should learn how social programs can improve the quality of life of everyone, while authoriatarianism and surveillance states should always be rejected.

Another important thing to note about the War in Donbas that touches on Adam Something's point regarding the revival of Ukrainian nationalism is that-from a leftist perspective-it is about as detrimental to the goal of peace in the region as Russian nationalism is. The territorial defence battalions founded on the outset of the conflict, as well as many sociocultural vestiges from the conflict in Chechnya come very explicitly from right-wing ideologies, and the fight against Russia has *definitely* shifted a fair amount from one of a European Union identity to that of a National, and at times, *ethnic* sovereignty. To ignore and downplay Russia's territorial encroachment not only creates an apathy that the country can exploit, it also bolsters the worst parts of the European right-wing.

I know I am one year late, but I have to softly disagree with Adam on Die Linke, as a german leftist myself and would like to add some context. Certainly, there has been too much appeasement of russia by the party mainstream, this has been turned around however, after the invasion of Ukraine as a whole. There is still a wing of the party around a former party leader, Sahra Wagenknecht, who clings to this position, but she has been a point of contention for a while now. She's been actively dividing the party with her rhetoric, seemingly in a grift to boost her own popularity. She achieved this by appealing to the same kind of contrarianism as the AfD. She has been critical of the (quite literal) open-borders policy position of Die Linke. She has also positioned herself in opposition to sensible government measures during the COVID-pandemic, as a kind of soft Anti-Vaxxer. Furthermore, she posits (quite wrongly), that a focus on social issues like queer rights and anti-racism (which is part of their platform but not their primary messaging focus), as well as the alliance with somewhat radical climate activists is hurting Die Linke with average voters and that they should focus on class. Recently, Wagenknecht has been publicly contemplating forming her own party. She still regularly partakes in or co-hosts third-positionist-ish "pro-peace demonstrations" to spout NATO-whataboutism. She also published a book ("Die Selbstgerechten") reiterating these positions and framing left-liberals (such as the german Greens) as the most notable enemy of the "true left". The party leadership even tried to expel her from the party, but the motion sadly failed. It is unknown how much of the party base agrees with her, but according to my estimate it can't exceed a third of the membership. In my humble opinion, Die Linke is still the best option for Leftists in Germany. The Greens are to institutionalized to be a viable alternative. They've actually governed federally in Germany together with the SPD before, from 1998 to 2005. Saying they compromised their values without having to would be the understatement of the century. The Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, was basically the Bill Clinton of Germany, or our Tony Blair, for any Brit stumbling upon this comment. The Schröder cabinet followed the trend of neoliberal government by nominally left-wing parties after years of conservative hegemony. The greens are not a leftist party. They are a left-leaning liberal party. Their policies wouldn't go nearly far enough, even if they ruled alone with absolute majority and kept all their promises, which will never happen. The SPD and Greens need Die Linke to form something even resembling a left-wing majority. Die Linke needs significant internal reform to be effective, to be sure. Still, they are our best bet. They have competent leadership (For example, Thuringia's PM, Bodo Ramelow). What they need is charismatic leadership (literally nobody wants to be at the top of this party), revitalized grassroot support and effective messaging.

@rosebudtv46602 жыл бұрын
Apparently KZbin thinks that I'm spamming although I deleted my initial comment to fix some mistakes here it is: If you want to discuss seriously the conflict in Ukraine there are two things that are absolutely essential to understand: language and geography. There is a strong Western/Eastern divide in Ukraine and Ukraine is de facto a bilingual county. Ukrainians in the west speak Ukrainian, while in the East they speak Russian. There are more similarities with Ukrainian and Russian languages than for example with English and Spanish but people still prefer to use their native language and the Eastern part of the country reacts negatively when Ukrainian speakers who are the majority create laws that limit the use of Russian language (Russian native speakers conservatively form about 20% of population, liberally - up to 35%. It's really hard to tell because a lot of people use a weird mixture of Russian and Ukrainian called "Surjik"). In fact, Russian speakers in Ukraine form the largest language minority group in Europe whose rights are not explicitly protected on any level of government and in the last few years some harsh norms have been adopted like complete ban on Russian schools, quotas on films, music, literature and the requirement to only speak Ukrainian in all business venues. The Western part of Ukraine has been more pro-European while the Eastern - pro-Russian (Even now in the time of War pro-Russian party gathers about 50% of the votes in Ukrainian controlled part of Donbas). These divisions form at least two clear identities of Ukrainians with two different goals. Western Ukrainians generally favor Unitarian structure of the state with strong centralized government, while Eastern prefer more decentralized government with more power to the regions all the way up to federalization. (federalization is a marginal opinion though). These contradictions can and are exploited by Russia and Ukraine is having a hard time figuring out what its path in the future should be. Right now most of political establishment prefer pro-EU, pro-Nato course. However there is a strong minority who would favor a return to multipolarity - basically sitting on a fence between Russia and EU. Explicitly pro-Russian shift is a marginal view but it still exists.

Not to mention the fact that die Linke is Euro sceptical. Considering Ukraine there is a west east devide there. When the west tend to be closer to Europe, was part of Polish commonwealth for long time and so like Poland tended to be very nationalistic and antisemitic (at least at ww2 where they were comparable to Poles and Baltics on antisemitism). So I guess they tend to be more nationalistic today too, considering antisemitism I don't sure (they elected Jewish origin president but this do not mean that there isn't some level of anti semtism) though for the experience of my family members that came from there in 1990's the west tended to be more antisemitic. The east on the other hand is more pro Russia, has more close history to Russia, either being part of Russian minority or being Russian speaking. Though you can argue that some there are nationalists as well just Russian nationalists. It's seems at least for now that the pro EU pro democracy camp seem to be more dominant then the ultra nationalists considering the current political situation despite the power that ultra nationalist militias (that probably are west origin) have in conflict zones. Though some nationalist policies either against Russian influence (Russian allied oligarchs and media) or against Russian language did come. Note: not meaning that this is true about everybody in east or west, that west are either pro EU or ultra nationalists or east are pro Russia. Also because if all east was pro Russia the situation was different...

But I cannot help but see this as an unduely niche emphasis, given that he is hinging his entire judgement of Die Linke on it, without ever providing any perpective regarding the rest of the German spectrum of viable parties. Since he is focussing on his pet foreign policy issue, I might as well bring up that Die Linke was the only party in parliament to reject Germany's participation in the invasion of Afghanistan and many other US led war desasters. So on that alone, I have to shrug a bit at Adam's somehwat damning review of Die Linke.

Yes they are. I read enough stuff about them and can tell you they have insane people in their party. Since nobody except 3\4 individual people in the party try to actively better the party and get rid of those people the party is absolutely not an option for a vote. Btw. Sarah Wagenknecht is the Tankie queen of Europe 🇪🇺

As a German, I completely agree with this guy. To cut the history lesson on the Linke short: During the GDR, there was basically a one party system. The party in charge which "surprisingly" got way over 90% of the votes during the supposedly "free" elections was the SED. After the wall went down, this party didn't just cease to exist, it became one of many parties the people of the GDR could vote for in their first truly and free and also last election under the banner of the GDR. They voter for pro-unification parties, so Reunification happened, and the various parties united, too. That is why the full names of the greens is "Bündnis 90/Die Grünen"..."Bündnis 90" was the name of the Green party which grew n the GDR. Anyway, the SED became the PDS (Party of democratic Socialism...meaning "we still want the GDR back, but we promise we will do it democratic this time around), but actually failed to gain acceptance in the whole of Germany. But then our Socialdemocrats had one of their many "Flügelkämpfe" (fights between the various groupings of the parties). The leader of the more leftist SPD, Lafountaine, actually split the party and joined fources with the PDS. From this alliance, Die Linke was born. And it is still to this day very much plagued by Tankies, while also basically stealing the room for other far left parties. I mean, the only other one which kind of gets attention once a while is that Marxist-Lenist Party Germany, and they mostly get attention because they are f... crazy and don't bother to hide their Tankie tendencies (basically they are to the Linke what the NPD is to the AfD). There are btw good reasons why the majority of Germans prefer to stay somewhere in the middle of politics. Because both alternatives were already tried, with terrible results.

Ah yes, the good old SED boogeyman. I'm afraid you're on the wrong channel if you're trying to push the usual fence-straddling bothsideism. Nobody is buying the false dicotomy of liberal capitalism vs. outright stalinism here. Not that I expect you to know or care to learn in good faith about - yes - _democratic_ socialism..

@swanpride2 жыл бұрын
@@vantahawk2834 ...social democracy falls nowhere in the economic spectrum. Politically it is centre left. A social market economy though, the kind of system social democrats in Germany normally follow (make no mistake, you can follow another system while still being counter as a social democrat - depending on the country, that is) is somewhere between the pure capitalism and the liberal capitalism the US and the UK follow and state capitalism, which was the system of the GDR. I don't think that your embarassment needs to be second hand in any way, if you don't even know the difference between the political and the economic spectrum....
@vantahawk28342 жыл бұрын
@@swanpride Still wrong. Both social democracy and US capitalism fall under liberal capitalism - as in market capitalism framed in a republican nationstate - that is what's liberal about it. Obviously what is often associated with social democracy falls somewhat further left on that spectrum but it is still on it. "Pure capitalism" in the literal does not and cannot exist. You are mostly right to identify the GDR as state capitalism. Given that insight tho you should be able to distunguish between that and democratic socialism. I am aware that many social democrats may flirt with more radical visions on a good day, but since in practise they are not really concerned with addressing the mode of production as such, instead settling for merely managing capitalism, that makes them de facto liberals all the same. And it is that exact difference in commitment to a post-capitalist future that distinguishes them from demsocs.

The Donbass conflict was explained very one-sided. Nothing was said about warcrimes commited by neo-nazi battalions, about bombardments of cities by Ukrainan army and big civilian casualties caused by this, about events in Odessa in 2014. Of course the role of Russia and Putin in this war is huge, but at least try to understand the people who opposed the Ukrainan government, why they began fighting. It is very biased to describe all the people who were against Ukraine as a bunch of terrorists paid by Russian government. When you are debunking Russian propaganda it isn't necessary to rebroadcast Western propaganda.

@@Bobogdan258 Azerbaijan and Armenia seemed to be fine with Russia keeping its distance. By the time Georgia wanted to get closer to NATO Russia was pissed with its expansion. And no way would Russia let Ukraine join in. The Baltic states joining was the last straw for Russia, considering they were very calm with this. It doesn’t matter if their reasoning is defensive. The promise to Gorbachev was broken with successive states encroaching their military towards Russian border. Did you see Russia invade Azerbaijan or Armenia? Didn’t think so.

@@TheZachary86 oh man I wonder how did all those pro-russian minorities got in the Baltic countries, Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine and in Azerbaijan. It was a soviet policy to assure that all the SSRs have had their borders fucked up and moved different people to different SSRs to have ethnic tensions later down the line. The Soviet Union was an empire that focused more on Russian imperial interest like getting back the tsarist empire's borders and establishing a neutral barrier ignoring what the countries most affected have to say just so Moscow can feel snug and safe from any western country. Putin and a bunch of other people are nostalgic of the USSR not because they're avowed communists, but just because they're imperialist and they did it better under the empire.

@@Bobogdan258 Oh wow, you’re really concerned about Russian residents being “nefarious” in those countries. Way to stereotype people. No wonder they feel sidelined by these so called European states. What happened to an elected representation of the people? Besides you obviously know scant details of USSR policies except for the big ones which europe love to point out. USSR was actually pro self identity, look up korenisatziya (indigenisation). Russification was more an imperial Russia policy. The only thing they promoted was sovietisation, which as you know no longer exists.
