+jesus poo Its a shame, these days Adrian Belew seems to not be up to much... King Crimson is working on an album without him, however; Robert Fripp seems to reinvent King Crimson every so many decades.

+MajickPalindrome I am given to understand that Belew underwent a religious conversion a while back and it changed his perspective. He has not been preachy or practicing conspicuous consumption....so ...more power to him.

Even as a kid, sort of got the impression that Bowie had a rare humility about him & his obvious fame. Seems like he was a very sharing musician. As a musician myself, that's the best thing in the world, playing with & sharing music with others instead of fighting against them for the spotlight. Bowie was one of a kind.

Buru Soila A couple of years later (1983, I believe), I saw Ade live @ Toad's Place in New Haven (same year Fripp did a combination seminar/Frippertronics show there). I remember hearing "Big Electric Cat", "The Lone Rhino", "Adidas In Heat", a Beatles cover, & some Crimson tune(s) Adrian wrote; "Heartbeat" was definitely one of them. Great show. He also played a show there with The Bears (guys he was in a previous band with, I think), as well as with Crimson on the "Discipline" & "Beat" promotional tours. Those KC shows were mind blowing; two shows in one night the first time (3/3/82) from about 15 feet away, with another show the following night.

Great version. I've been a Belew fan for a long, long time - back to when he played with Zappa. I got to spend quite a bit of time with him in London in the early-2000s when King Crimson were signed to the label I worked for. I was their 'label guy'. What a thrill for me and I'm happy to report he was a good-humoured gent. Fripp (with whom I've also been obsessed since the 70s) turned up to the hotel suite where we were doing interviews and was hilarious and weird in equal measure. What a day!

Agreed - a guitar genius that just makes everyone he plays with seem even better. I loved that oh too brief combo of Fripp, Belew , Levin and Bruford in King Crimson. He also transformed a Talking Heads performance into something way beyond the band themselves could produce.

Just 3 weeks ago, I was lucky to catch Belew in a powerful quartet (trio plus one), in a smallish club in Detroit. This is a man who celebrates what he does and appreciates those who support him.

Just only recently found out Belew worked with Bowie?! A weird blind spot considering I've been a big fan of Adrian since 1983. I knew he played with King Crimson, Talking Heads and Zappa since that time. Not sure how I missed that considering I was a big Bowie fan from day one (the other guitarist here onstage Carlos Alomar I knew about as early as 1981). Lodger being one of very few Bowie albums I did not hear back in the day may have had something to do with it I guess.

Look for Bowie on Adrian's 'Young Lions' solo album. He wrote Pretty Pink Rose and gave it to Belew. Nice gift...good album.

I am a Mick Ronson fan, and I thought Carlos Alomar was brilliant in this clip. Like Ronno, he used his talent to support Bowie (and Belew).

Ronson fan here also. While Belew is a great talent, this song sounds better with Earl Slick playing lead. I wish there were clips of Slick, Alomar, Murray and Davis

I met Adrian Belew after a show at a Chicago club called Martyrs about 4-5 years ago. Super-nice guy, and a total gentleman. Had no issues posing for selfies, or answering random questions about his music or equipment. He's a real stand-up dude, and a fine human being overall. That, combined with his massive skills, may be why he got so many great gigs. Bless you, brother. Much respect.

Just that bit at the beginning .. Adrian Belew's wailing away on the guitar, the bass slowly comes in, and all Bowie can do is stand there, side stage, looking at the band and thinking to himself, "What a kick-ass band I have." Yes sir, you sure do. Thanks to RabbitEars from RP for the link. :)

I think Slick was Ronson's replacement at least in 74 he was. Agreed on all points, Murray and Davis are amazing, Alomar wonderful, but Belew? I feel nothing listening to him play on this song. It's self indulgent, Earl Slick's laid back style grooves way more than all the weedly deedly noodling heard here.

Your taste is impeccable. RED MONEY, seemingly a knock off of SISTER MIDNIGHT from Iggy's IDIOT album, is a personal fav, and every song (each sequenced perfectly) on SCARY MONSTERS AND SUPER CREEPS is $uper.

Check out the Bowie live album Stage, which mostly features Belew. He also played on the album The Lodger. Belew also toured with Bowie on the 1990 Sound+Vision tour, which was one of the greatest shows by anyone I've ever seen. There is a French TV bootleg of it around if you look hard. Belew had just released Young Lions, so they played the title song and "Pretty Pink Rose" during that show. I'm just impressed that Alomar seems happy standing the the back playing rhythm.

Oh man , Adrian Belew : one of the most original and inventive guitar players of all time . He takes every band to a higher level . No wonder Frank Zappa acted like a little child and was frustrated when Bowie asked Belew for his tour while Zappa just has ended his tour and didn't have performances in the time Bowie had his tour. So there wasn't a problem but never the less .......... It was the right decision of Belew while he knew Frank Zappa was against it. In the reactions of Zappa to Bowie Zappa acted like a narcist and Bowie stayed , as always a gentleman .
