A 15-minute extract from our 90-minute conversation. Full episode is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify and many more - also on my syndicated hosting website - thedavidcassid...
John Bahler, is one of the most recorded singers in history.
John has worked with some of the biggest stars including Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams and Elvis. His voice has appeared on hundreds of movie soundtracks, top-40 hits, television show themes and jingles.
But he may for many 1970s teenagers be most remembered as the man who created the unique and much-loved sound of The Partridge Family. The music - with lead vocals by David Cassidy and vocal arrangements by John - is considered the perfect example of what happens when you mix star quality and the best backing vocals with the musicians of the Wrecking Crew alongside beautiful lyrics and arrangements which set new standards in pop music.
John, with his brother Tom, started the Love Generation. He is married to Janet Lennon, one of the Lennon Sisters
In an amusing and often emotional conversation, recorded in early November, John reflects on his career and speaks on a range of subjects sharing anecdotes of his life story including:
• The influence his father had on his career
• Landing work on popular TV show, Swingin’ Country
• How he created the Partridge Family sound and pushed the harmonies to new levels
• His appreciation of how the music changed millions of lives
• Explains how a song is structured and singing techniques
• Describes what he considers his best work
• His friendships with David Cassidy and Michael Jackson
• Working with Barbra Streisand and Andy Williams
• Where he rates David in the history of American pop music
We started by talking about recordings he made in London with Lulu and at Abbey Road with the London Symphony Orchestra
Cherish David Cassidy A Legacy of Love is available from Amazon and all major bookstores worldwide.

I really LOVED THIS, is this whole interview on KZbin, as well??? David has the most beautiful, sexy, unique, passionate, mesmerizing voice ever in music!!!, and the fabulous, wonderful Partridge Family songs, with the writing, the arrangements, and the best musicians in the world), and a small handful of songs David wrote, in the same style, and a few others, were his best songs!!! His voice was unique in all the world, and the most BEAUTIFUL!!! It is a shame he didn't appear to see it.

This is a lovely and informative discussion of the creative process and the work ethic of true music professionals. David Cassidy was truly a one of a kind talent. John Bahler's commentary here is insightful and filled with the positive energy of an artist.

TPF albums so were so well written and produced. I still enjoy them to this day. Tony Romeo was a awesome lyricist, David's voice, and the talented studio musicians make TPF stand the test of time.

Thanks for sharing this interview. It was fascinating and you asked really great questions. Am again saddened to know that David didn’t believe in himself, and also that he wanted to sound like someone else....not appreciating at the time, that this was what made him unique.

Here's what somebody should have pointed out ...."I Think I Love You" what a HIT before the Partridge Family even hit the TV screens. So, it was his voice that won us over....his voice...not the TV show (but that was fun too). Like the guy says, "His voice was one in a million..."

It’s so sad that David had lack of self belief. I think it was down to his father to be honest. Don’t think he ever got over the way his father left without telling him. Then he spent his life yearning for Jack’s approval and never got it.

What kind of father is so jealous of his son’s success that he constantly belittled David’s talent leaving David with a skewed view that his father was the greater talent - which was totally tipsy turvy.

One of the Wrecking Crew who ,apart from David Cassidy and Shirley Jones doing lead vocals, were the real sound of The Partridge Family. With their outstanding backing vocals and top class musicianship they also did backing tracks for lots of other artists of the day. Including Petula Clark.

Great listen, but I always will wonder. Would David Cassidy have been able have to sell records if he was never labeled as a teen idol/Keith Partridge? It seems that was a tag he could never shake and it became such a hinderance. There were so many good pieces he did in later years (When I'm a Rock & Roll Star, Breakin' Down Again - and the OLD TRICK album of the 90s is just solid from one track to the next).

I was thinking that Shirley Jones was a major star with a beautiful voice and on the show she was singing backup vocals to her 19 yr old stepson who was the star of the show and brought in the money . I see Shirley was gracious letting David have the spotlight despite being a big star and she seemed not to be egotistical and jealous like Jack Cassidy. But you see on all the album's it says starring Shirley Jones and featuring David cassidy to give Shirley respect

The gentleman speaking is Mr. John Bahler. He arranged the background vocals for The Partridge Family and he, along with his brother, Tom Bahler, Jackie Ward, Ron Hicklin and a few other vocalists, sang all of the background vocals for all of the Partridge Family records. A very talented man!

There's a market for those isolated backing vocal tracks... bitte? Someone tried to make fun of DC because he played a lot of PF songs in concert. I told him it was "job security" for a musician. God bless him. I hope he's in peace now.
