I remember when I got this game when I was young. My first ever Sonic game. I had so much fun, that I tried to find the copy I owned when I was older. My parents always put the old stuff we owned in the attic. I eventually find it, but something was strange though. The copy I found had the name "Sanik the Hedgehoog" in black sharpy. I didn't think much and got the Genesis out as well to get ready to play. I plugged it in and got ready to play. I turn it on. The unthinkable happened. The Sega logo appears and I got to play the game. The End. Thanks for reading my Non-Creepy Pasta.

The best way to play this game legitimately is to play it on Apple TV with a Bluetooth controller. That’s how I played the taxman Sonic 1, 2, and CD games.

I feel bad for saying this, but GHZ is probably the only level from this game I enjoy. I feel like each of the others has gimmicks that interrupt the momentum-based gameplay that the sequel did better to manage.

I will always have a soft spot for Sonic 1, even though growing up with the PAL Sonic Compilation cart (that had Sonic 1, 2 & Mean Bean) 90% of the time I would gravitate to Sonic 2. There's just something about it for me that nostalgic, digestable & tickles my interest of retro games circa that late 80's - early 90's era that I find very satisfying to go through once in a while, and David touched on this in Marble Zone and I'll be curious if he says something similar during Labyrinth Zone, that when I'm not able to go fast in these zones I'm nowadays patient enough to go through those platforming sections as if it's like a Mario game and enjoy them for what they are. It's hard for me to pinpoint what it is that has allowed me to enjoy those commonly criticized parts as I got older, even with the fact that it counters the concept of what they were marketing Sonic to be in '91, but to this day I find myself more appealed to play 1 over 2 (which I know is another story & uncommon comment ) as it's more digestible, hits my nostalgia just right and can enjoy almost everything in the game. Looking forward to the other parts guys!

The Genesis can do scaling and rotating but only with the screen broken up into larger blocks whereas Mode 7 on the SNES can rotate the background on a per pixel basis. Game Hut’s video on Red Zone is a good example of how background rotation works on the Genesis and Retro Gaming Mechanics Explained has a series on SNES capabilities and one of those videos is just on Mode 7.

Yeah, it's a good example of how the 2013 version "feels" right to play, but a lot of little things are actually different. In this case I'm not sure if it's due to the physics or if it's an intentional change, though I suspect the former. - Chris

Sonic 1 has always,on hindsight, been one of the worst SONIC games. As a platformer,it's not that bad,but as a SONIC game,it's terrible. But of course,Sega didn't know what Sonic would become years down the line
