Davinci resolve 15.2 - My favorite new features!

Davinci Resolve 15.2 just dropped and there are a ton of great little tweaks and improvements. In this video we go over a couple of my favorites, but to see all the new features/improvements/fixes head over to Blackmagic's website.
p.s. I forgot to mention another favorite feature. Resolve now remembers import and export locations. hand clap emoji.

Unfortunately it is not "hold N". It is just a simple toggle as all NLE's have since ages. Btw I would love holding the Z-key to draw a marquee in the timeline for where you want to zoom in.

I am brand new to resolve. I think I made one video before the update. I’m noticing that the play back is much more smooth in the update and they have performance mode on by default. Previously performance mode would actually hinder performance. So I’m quite pleased and I’m happy to be learning on the latest version. I look forward to checking out some of your tutorials. This video was a little fast for me not being familiar with the whole suite. I am very excited about the beauty tool as I use face tune all the time on my photos LOL so the fact that there something like that for video is a game changer for me!

I love the multiband compression. Sure, could have done this with VST, but the advantage of having a native one is more program stability and better interoperability for your projects if they get passed around between different environments (where isn't guaranteed that you will have all the same VSTs installed). Works great on the master track for automatically targeting problem frequencies without mushing the entire spectrum of sound.

I shouted for joy last night when I saw the updates. I think one of the best ones is the high frame rate timeline for smoother scrubbing. And Hardware accelerated h.264.

h.264 was a mess in resolve forever. The math behind highly compressed codecs is totally wild, so getting that to work with GPUs is no small task. There are a lot of h.264 clips out there, but it is pretty common to transcode those for better editing performance. Also resolve now has the encode side accelerated as well which means faster deliveries and h.264 is a very common delivery format (I almost always am required to make at least 1 h.264 version). -Theo

Y2Kvids it’s been hardware accelerated decode since DR14 but that’s been primarily on intel chips with quick sync. Now it’s hardware encode/decode through GPU which is super fast.

Is accelerated h.264 a feature for the Studio version only or is this new in 15.2 for the free version? I'm a noob so it took forever to understand that my workstation has been struggling with multiple layers of h.264 clips on the free version, and recently learned that the Studio version used hardware decoding for this already. I checked BM site for feature list just now and see this: "• Support for hardware accelerated encoding of H.264 and H.265 using specific NVIDIA GPUs on DaVinci Resolve Studio; Windows and Linux only" So it specifies encoding, but as I understand things (I don't! :D ) my issue was cpu decoding basically. I assume I'll just get in the habit of transcoding regardless.

Has v15 made any track matte operations easier? I like the one in Premiere pro and when I last used Davinci I found it a convoluted process.

Still looking for a better way to get transitions from fusion into edit tab without counting frames, stacking and creating fusion comps. It takes so long and is so restrictive. Also colour grading before adding edits is a ball ache

Does anyone know how to use proxies in resolve to be able to edit on a cloud? in premier I would create proxies and give that and the project folder to a remote editor to allow him to edit and upload it with smaller file size and he would send it back to me with the smaller file sizes.. any help??

When i instaled and trying to open Resolve it takes 2 or 3 minutes for actual start, it constantly searching for non-existing panels. Then wnen i trying to add some videos it freeze for another minute, then files dissapear from media pool and i add them again, from second try it kinda works. After simple edit i exported file, and know what? It's corrupted with crazy heavy distorsions. I try it many times before with different versions, even on paid, it's pain every time. Worse expirience i ever have. Core i-7 3632QM, SSD 256GB, 16GB RAM, GT-640M

5:20 -ish HELL yes~ as a primarily audio guy, this tickles me more than I can even convey. Okay, but more importantly, did they ever add sidechain functionality? It's a tremendous PIA having to manually adjust levels for background music and SFX every time a voiceover comes in.

Hey Gunnie, Good news! Sidechaining was added in a little bit ago. In fairlight its Dynamics then in the compressor you can control the sidechain behavior. -Theo

Hi im using dr15 right now and recording via obs studio but when i try to edit some of my recordings the audio is screeching/tearing or audio delay but when i play it back with windows media player everything is okay will the 15.2 fix this or have any tips for me?

Hey there! If you are trying to edit the native obs recording (.flv, .mp4 etc...) you're going to have a bad time. DR15.2 did add improved handling for h.264, but its still not amazing. Best practice is still to transcode everything to a nicer codec (DNxHD, Prores, cineform, etc..). I know its a pain, but its better than dealing with all the grossness that comes when DR and highly compressed codecs try and play. -Theo

Remuxing is not the same as transcoding. Try transcoding the footage to prores, dnxhd, or cineform(you won't be able to use OBS for that operation you'll need something like adobe media encoder, handbrake, etc... to do that).

Am usually really enjoying his videos and i'm not a noob at Resolve, i know it well but here for exemple i can't get what he is liking/doing @1:27 : "I can actually A B the layer node" (not even sure if it's what he's sayin'). It's a new feature illustrated by an exemple, no more, but what's the shortcut? I have to look it up myself? Ok no prob. But so why am i watching this video? :)

@@888marin888 Well he uses Resolve professionally so it's good to see the features that he is excited about. And since Resolve updates with about 100 new tweaks and new features, having a short list of the ones we might use a lot is helpful. I use Resolve fairly frequently and I didn't know what he meant by A/B a node, but then we both read more about it and learn why it is important. And "why am I watching this video?" could apply to all of KZbin :)
