I live near the South Downs Way and often walk sections of it. Its only drawback for me is, if I want to visit a pub and in the wrong place, I have to walk downhill to one, and then back uphill to resume my walk. It's not like that all along its length but I'm sure more than half of it. It's a great walk though and easy to do, it's also a cycle route as well.

When I went over Blenkinsop Moor it took me about half an hour to find that fence you join and follow it is so wet there is no path, people go all over the moor trying to find the dryest ground, although the guide book you are using is good i think they should take you round the edge of the moor to find the fence rather than taking you accross at a angle to join it, i have heard other walkers have got lost going over there, i don't know if you are there yet but the section between Bellingham and Byrness you go through forests on a forest track, after leaving Byrness it's a steep old climb up to the top before meeting the Cheviots, i can understand your spirits being low at times with having to concentrate a lot on where you are putting your feet in that boggy ground after nearly 2 weeks hiking, when you get to the Border Hotel at Kirk Yetholm don't forget to ask for your free half pint.

Don't know about you,but i'm knackered just watching these videos.😝 don't forget to get your certificate and free drink from border hotel when you finish.

Watching you trudge though the boggy moorlands I am glad when I hike the PW it was a drought year, it got so dry people were forbidden to use garden hoses to water plants then it got really bad when all water was turned off to Private Homes and they had Stand Pipes in each street that were only turned on for a few hours each day. The drawback was there were fewer streams to fill my water bottles as they were in the most part dry. Tony in Essex

Hey Tony where in Essex are you? I am in USA now but lived in Crays Hill for almost 20 years! Am old enough I remember a few droughts and hose pipe bans...not sure I remember the Stand Pipes tho when was that? prior to 1964??! Anyway...shall wait for a dry spring or dry summer before attempting PW based on Christina's recommendations!!!

@@melaniegarden3416 I was born in Grimsby in 1957 and only moved to Braintree after I left the Army in 1979, I could not face the Cold Snowy Winters after a 2 Yr Posting to Gibraltar. The Stand Pipe was during the Mines Strike in the early 1970s we were also on just 4 hours of Electricity per day due to lack of coal for the Power Stations. Tony in Essex

@@user-TonyUK awe yeh I remember the Miners' Strikes! During the power outages we ad no electricity so used to drink marmite with hot tap water!

@@melaniegarden3416 Then just imagine what that Winter of Discontent, in the North of England was like with NO COAL to heat the House and No Electricity to Cook the Food. Even though I am of a Working Class background I never trusted the Red Menace ever again. Now in 2024 they are back in Power.

One tough woman taking on the Pennine Way in Oct/November. The weather can be tough any time of year, but usually slightly warmer and longer daylight hours. How you are managing the water and mud is incredible.

Good afternoon Christina, all the wet is due to a wet winter and spring and a very poor summer. I hope that it is much better when you and Ben return in the spring. Regards. Andrew.

Did you say that path was 'shite' 😄😄😄! You have been spending too much time in the north of England! Hope your good spirits return soon. It is a massive undertaking doing the Pennine Way so late in the year. As hikers, we all have those moments of questioning our life choices when it's damp and the end still seems distant. Those moments are temporary but achievement is forever. Keep on keeping on! ✊

Lololol. Is "shite" what people in north England say? Ive heard it in movies. Lol

No matter what he says, you can never spend too much time in the North of England.

While crossing the Golf Course at Haltwhistle I naturally waited for the Golfers to Tee Off at each Green I walked passed only be told I had the Right of Way and Golfer were expected to wait for me to cross before they could carry on playing their game, which I though was nice of them to do that. If you have enjoyed the Hike so far let me tell you the BEST is yet to come. Tony in Essex

you will get plenty of time to walk through the Forrest leading up to Hadrians Walls, not sure yet if you cover that in this episode or the next one. Tony in Essex

When I did the PW north to south the second (and successful time) I stuck to the side of the rail track to avoid the bogs and defensive cows with calves (I nearly got killed 3 times by stampeding cows even though I followed advice to not make noise, don't get between cows and calves etc) 😬....I took my revenge in greenhead by eating a massive steak and ale pie lol. Keep going, your doing great 👍🏻
@hikersheep7 күн бұрын
@trooperwolfie lol. So far cows are afraid of me. Thank goodness. When you walked south, did you get sun in your face everyday?
@RegEdmunds7 күн бұрын
I have never had a great relationship with UK cows, they can be rather dodgy! I was attacked by a cow in the Pyrenees in 2015, it charged, hit me full in the chest, lifted me off my feet, and threw me down a bank. A few days later in the dark and in thick fog I wild camped and at dawn 5 domesticated pigs tried to get in my tent with me. I saw when daylight I had wandered into an open-range pig area.

Those of us who have also walked the PW have, I'm sure, hiked the boggy section once, and then people like me never do it again. We stay on the Tyne Trail to Haltwhistle, (I really like the place) and then hike up Haltwhistle Burn to the B6318 road, and join Hadrians Wall at Milecastle 42. If you meet anyone coming south that's the option to offer them. Have fun, a great video.

Everytime i do a long-distance hike, the sole of my feet immediately adapt to the wet by hardening. I dont know how. Then after the hike is over, they go back to normal. Therefore i never get any blister

The sheep you saw wearing a harness was probably a ram wearing a pad soaked in dye, so when he mounts the ewe (female sheep) he will leave a mark on her, so the farmer will see if he’s ’done the business’ 😉 with the ewe 😄
