There was some fantastic match racing, the way the sport is supposed to be enjoyed. It's great to see two brilliant crews competing at such a level. Also, it's great to see the rule book being challenged because that's what match racing is all about. It's not just about sailing; it's also about using the rules to your advantage. It's so much better to watch racing like this than just seeing one yacht sailing away from the other.

LR almost screwed up their advantage by failing ro lay line in the 7th leg and having to do an extra tack. Possibly the biggest error in a rwce with few on either side.

The prestart was as close as you'd want to go and wasn't given. Reminds me of how few penalties have been awarded for successful hooks, almost none I can recall; the leading boat always seems to be able to accelerate too quickly. Seems like the best bet is to almost avoid all attempts unless the decision is 95% clear cut; the cost of attempting to get something and failing is just too high.

Hi Matt, is there any chance that you can sit down with Richard Slater and go through the umpires recording of the sexond race on Day 3 of the LV Challengers Final? The RYA did a fabulous walk thru of a couple of incidents in Aukland AC36 with Craig Mitchell. I am sure that UmpireBot has come a long way since then and it would be fascinating to hear the logic they are applying. It would be good to see how they apply penalty distances etc. loving the coverage!

The wind on most days seems either too little or too much, but - as Goldilocks would like it - rarely just right. I can imagine the stress it puts on the sailors having to wait on the water endlessly, which can lead to frayed tempers.

I've been following the Americas cup since Bus Mossbacher and the J boats!! Watched them when @ 2am they had to tow the boats out to race course. Watched Connors almost win on a profoundly inferior boat!! Kind of lost interest when the racing was more about litigation than sailing. Watched Spithill pull off his miracle in 2013 Wanted them to move entirely to a cat formula. Now I'm holding on for the moment when one of the boats hits 52.17 knots. That will be payback for whatever they want to call the monohulls with wings!!! That will be the imperial equivalent of 60 mph!! It is after all "The Americas Cup"!!

Good old Italian build quality strikes LRPP yet again. The judges also just gave Inios the green light to go super aggressive by not giving the penalties yesterday.

Incredible race, akin to watching Moto GP racing. Not nice though to hear Ben constantly whining about the penalty not being given at the pre-start when Inneos was clearly off its due course, almost as if trying to ram Luna Rossa.
@davidr5597Ай бұрын
Yes, getting into the "Red Zone thinking", like he clearly was is never good, whatever the sporting code. It probably cost them clean performance in the first half of the race just due to his heated thinking and decision making.
@rogerlindley8699Ай бұрын
I assume you mean proper course not due course? If that is the case then there is no proper course prior to the start signal 🤷♂️. This is classical match racing pre start manoeuvres, otherwise Ineos would have been penalised quite correctly which they were not. Ineos was trapping lrpp into a windward boat must keep clear once an overlap is established. Lrpp commenced a gype on to starboard and forced inoes to gybe away to avoid a collision when they were not the keep clear boat. The debate is whether ineos had an overlap prior to lrpp passing thro head to wind on the gybe. These boats travel so fast that overlaps happen very quickly. From the camera views and virtual eye views it appears the overlap occurred around a second before lrpp crossed head to wind. In which case lrpp should have had a penalty. This occurred a further two times during the race. Both were very close decisions but in the second of these ineos had a clear overlap and lrpp was again the keep clear boat. Ineos had to bear away to avoid a collision (Rule 14). So, given the circumstances, Ben controlled his emotions very well! It would appear that the umpires just look at whether the “ virtual no go area” collision sensors around each boat intersect, if not the it’s not a penalty. They appear to b ignoring rule 14 altogether. In “conventional” sailing dinghies we often felt obliged to force a contact on a keep clear boat to ensure a successful protest. However, one thing nudging another boat at 5 knots vs 30+ knots!
@neiss2Ай бұрын
@@rogerlindley8699 Sorry yes, I meant "proper course". On Ben's whining thing, here you have the explanation of the umpire, which, if not exactly, goes the way I was saying: Inneos, despite having priority on the first part of the maneuver, had to stay clear of LR on the second part of it, as it passed from being the Right-of-way boat to the one who had to give way (hence not following the proper course was not the option). Start watching at 04:00 on this video with the AC Umpire explaining it. Feel free to ask me anything else you would like to know about sailing rules 😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJPFeYymhs6DipI

@paolorubenmastrettaАй бұрын
Not really an opinion I would expect from someone with your name. Joking aside the rules are the same for everyone and are equally enforced. They are purposely made to penalize side to side close calls and are more lenient to the boat in control in case the other boat tries to get them a penalty. Am I happy with the rules, not all of them... That being said they're being applied fairly.

So wasn't the 'now the wind is okay' when LR was changing the sails a plenty enough 'gift' from the umpires??
