Can somebody explain how it is not appallingly sexist of St Paul to say the following? 1 Timothy: “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing.” I love Fr Mike. To me, he is a walking, talking saint. I am really disappointed he did not address this point.
@WeatherWonders8 ай бұрын
I thought about and looked into this and came up with some notable things. I tried to keep it concise, but . . . It seems to me that St. Paul's advice here is meant to be a practical safeguard concerning behavior common to women. You can see this in the immediate context, when he says "the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly". He was certainly not oblivious to the possibility of a woman quarreling, or a man dressing vainly. But men tend to benefit from especially watching their tempers, and women tend to benefit from especially being mindful of humble dress. Here, perhaps, Adam and Eve are being used to demonstrate commonalities of the sexes' personalities. But I don't really understand that part, and to my knowledge we are complementarian (something I also don't know much about). St. Augustine of Hippo had this to say (AD 430): "So, too, we must believe that Adam transgressed the law of God, not because he was deceived into believing that the lie was true but because in obedience to a social compulsion he yielded to Eve, as husband to wife, as the only man in the world to the only woman. It was not without reason that the apostle wrote, 'Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived.' He means, no doubt, that Eve accepted the serpent’s word as true, whereas Adam refused to be separated from his partner even in a union of sin. This does not imply that he was on that account any less guilty, since he sinned knowingly and deliberately." So Paul was evidently not making a statement regarding natural law but reacting to an issue described by St. John Chrysostom (AD 407): "Then indeed the women, from such teaching, kept silence; but now there is apt to be great noise among them, much clamor and talking, and nowhere so much as in this place. They may all be seen here talking more than in the market, or at the bath. For, as if they came hither for recreation, they are all engaged in conversing upon unprofitable subjects. Thus all is confusion, and they seem not to understand, that unless they are quiet, they cannot learn anything that is useful. For when our discourse strains against the talking, and no one minds what is said, what good can it do to them? To such a degree should women be silent, that they are not allowed to speak not only about worldly matters, but not even about spiritual things, in the church. This is order, this is modesty, this will adorn her more than any garments. Thus clothed, she will be able to offer her prayers in the manner most becoming." I saw a similarity in the advice Paul gives in chapter 5 (read in the next episode), when he talks about widows being "enrolled", and refusing to enroll younger widows for practical reasons, not due to an intrinsic of young widows. Among the troubles he saw were very much like what St. John Chrysostom described. You will also find that the related passage on women keeping silence in 1 Corinthians 14 is amid advice about orderly worship. At the end of the letter Paul advises Timothy, "guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith." On another note, St. Ambrose of Milan (AD 397) takes the passage as, from what I can tell, concerning peace with the culture: "I think the prohibition in the law against a man wearing female garments refers not so much to clothing as to manners and to our habits and actions, since one act is becoming to a man, another to a woman. Therefore, the apostle, as the interpreter of the law, says, 'Let your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not permitted them to speak, but to be submissive, as the law says. But if they wish to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home.' And to Timothy he says, 'Let a women learn in quietness in all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or have authority over men.' How unsightly it is for a man to act like a woman!" All Scripture has significance for us today, but it is not always obvious. Scripture should be interpreted as a whole, probably with the confusing passages in light of the easier ones. We must not read it legalistically, that is, neglecting the author's intentions and consequently missing details that, for brevity, irrelevance, or supposed foreknowledge, weren't stated outright. I think it was Haydock or a saint who said in a commentary, if you don't understand a passage, don't stress over it; you can move on. I would add that we can rely on the Church to know how to generally apply it. I found these commentaries on the _Catena Bible_ website. If you would like to look into this more on KZbin, you may also be interested in _Pints with Aquinas_ interviews with women, or Mike Winger's tediously thorough videos on this topic.

It may seem that way, but let's not forget that Paul was dealing with pagans. We don't know exactly what sort of behaviors he had to contend with. In pagan religions, as we've learned from BIAY, there was a great deal of sexual immorality. The dress and comportment of women was probably adversely influenced by the culture. Paul was raised in a strictly religious Jewish environment. Even today, Orthodox Jewish women dress and comport themselves very modestly. So I would imagine all this had an influence on Paul's efforts to form reverent Christian communities unpolluted by the world.

WOW! I just recently figured something out that is related to todays reading. Guys usually love their kids for their accomplishments, women love them no matter if they are useless lay-abouts. When you run into someone in the mall with a baby the woman is gaga over the baby and the guy is 'are you done yet, can we go'. Its hard for a guy to understand that 'God loves you stuff'. I don't know Him and I don't love Him why does He love me. I was waking up from my usual coma (some people call it bed time) and was apparently dreaming about one of those dumb Christmas movies that i half watched and in the movie there was a woman who wanted children and just loved every kid she saw. I finally understood God's love for us. The woman loves kids unconditionally with out knowing them, without the kids doing anything great or worthy and I finally understood why God loves us. Its just something He does. There is no reason for it, its just His thing. It doesn't make any sense. He's gaga over us without us having to do anything to earn it.

Thank you for noticing that..! My comment started out like yours, but I learned that when He says something I’m not crazy about.. I want to go back and fight..! It’s like the part of the reading that says ‘wives, be subservient to your husbands’.. ouch, that gets stuck in my craw all the time. As I’ve gotten older, I DO realize what it means..! But it was NOT part of my wedding readings..! LOL The part I took umbrage with was… don’t adorn yourselves by wearing gold and pearls’… what I HEARD as.. ‘go hide yourselves and only come out when you’re ‘needed’.. (as you can see I’m taking poetic license with the verbiage..! LOL) But that’s what I heard..! LOL I paused Fr. Mike to write this, so I don’t know if he addressed it, but I don’t think so..! It’s ok.. I still love the Lord.. AND Fr. Mike..! Would there were MORE Fr. Mikes in the world..! There is one at my church, who is Christ personified..! I’m not sure he could ever do anything to make me NOT love him..! Keep the faith..! You probably won’t see this because I’m noticing that your comment was left 11 months ago. But, Merry Christmas to you and yours..! 12/22/2022… (well, it was when I BEGAN this..! LOL)

In speaking of Jesus being the mediator between God and man we must speak about the means of that meditation that being Jesus' death on His Cross and His Resurrection. This is the bond between God and Man even all men if they but put their trust in Christ's death and resurrection; the propitiation to God through His sacrifice of Himself.

This is the 1st moment that I can honestly say, "I love you Father Mike and I will pray for all of us". Please pray for me, a saint who lost their way. I see so much in Paul's letters that seem to say that since I lost my way, rejected Christ and grieved The Holy Spirit, I cannot come back. I believe, when I begin to run again, that is the "crack in the sidewalk" that I keep tripping on.

Precisely Paul should be a comfort for he went from partaking in the murder of St Stephen to be this great bishop and teacher. Nobody is too messy for the Father. Not even the smell of pig dung on the prodigal son could keep Him from hugging him... that's the mercy you'll receive. Go confess your sins and be whole again.

December 21, 2023 Round Two Please, do you have just a moment in time to pray for Souls in Purgatory with me? According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great, was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory: Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home, and in my family. Amen. In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)

Here is an interesting thought, I heard a sermon preached where I John v17 was taken quite literally, it was preached from a healing perspective. A lady with breast cancer took this verse and wrote it on her breast cancer report 'As He is so to am I in this world' meaning God is perfect, without blemish, she took this literally that she could be made whole like Him . The healing manifested, was verified, and her testimony has gone on to help countless other people. Praise God !
