The zoo in bear mountain is a sanctuary and rehab for local wildlife. Every animal in there is either being rehabilitated and released or will be cared for because they can't be released back into the wild for various reasons.

Love the videos. I am planning to hike for about 200 miles on my 40th birthday, starting on the Bear Mountain bridge and end it near Bennington, VT. I need to plan it all in advance (including flights, trains etc. - I am from Poland), so it’s great to have the insight and use other people’s experiences.

Nice Vlog of NY. Looks like you might have missed “Anthony’s Nose” view point just after the Bear Mt. Bridge. If your back this way again check it out. It’s a Great view.

Agree, but for thru-hikers it's about .7 off trail. She did a 27 miler that day and .7 more is rough. But that view from Anthony's nose is spectacular.

@@frolege1 .7 is the reason I've never heard of it. Not many are willing to walk almost 1 1/2 miles extra for one more view. Totally worth it if you live in the area or visit often.

@@djg5950 Yes, lots of day hikers park at the AT trailhead (Putnam County sign) hike up to the first blue blaze and take a right turn. AT Thru-Hikers make a LEFT turn and follow the white blaze.

The enclosures in this zoo are horrifying. Those poor animals. I hope it’s not necessary to walk through this animal prison to hike the AT. So, so sad.

There is a bypass around the zoo (not sure how close it passes to the cages) because the zoo is closed sometimes. I felt really bad for that fox and bobcat. Their pens are too small. I hate zoos anyway. Never visit them.

I kinda assume that hikers are lovers of animals and the natural world and would never take pleasure in seeing animals in confined conditions like these. I hate zoos as well. It’s shameful that they make money from animal suffering.

That zoo is for animals that have been injured or are sick and need rehabilitation. Some of them will go back to the wild some won’t. But it’s not like a normal zoo
