Explanatory video on the Earth's rotation and the resultant pattern of day and night on Earth. Interactive and printable worksheets relating to this topic are on ngscience.com.

In space, the Earth moves in different ways. One way the Earth moves is by spinning on its axis. An axis is an imaginary line that runs through the Earth’s center. This spinning movement on its axis is called a rotation.
As it rotates, part of the Earth is facing the sun. This part of the Earth it lit up and experiences daytime. At the same time, the opposite side of the Earth is facing away from the sun. This part of the Earth is in darkness and it is nighttime.
It takes the Earth 24 hours to complete one rotation. The repeating rotation of the Earth is why we experience the daily pattern of day and night.
Hello, primary students! Have you ever wondered why we have day and night? Let me explain it to you.
Our planet Earth spins on an imaginary line called an axis. It's kind of like a spinning top, but instead of just wobbling, it spins around completely. This spinning takes 24 hours to complete, which means that in one day, Earth completes one full rotation.
Now, here's the fun part - when one side of Earth is facing towards the sun, that side experiences daylight. And when the other side of Earth is facing away from the sun, that side experiences night time. So, as the Earth rotates, different parts of the planet are exposed to the sun's light, while other parts are in the shadows, creating day and night.
Isn't that cool? It means that when we're sleeping and it's dark outside, other parts of the world are enjoying bright sunshine and having lots of fun. And when we're having our daytime activities, other parts of the world are getting ready to go to bed.
So now you know why we experience day and night on Earth!

This is a great source and super simple to teach my 7 year old student. She asked me if there were 2 suns because when it was dawn where she lived, my time zone is still in the afternoon the previous day. I explained about the earth's rotation and she understood but having a visual aid will really solidify the concept. Thank you so much!

What is the relationship between rotation and time?
@NGScience
@NGScience Жыл бұрын
The Earth's rotation is directly linked to the concept of time as we understand it on a daily scale. A full rotation of the Earth on its axis, which we perceive as the transition from day to night and back again, takes approximately 24 hours. This rotation defines our concept of a "day." Moreover, the speed of Earth's rotation also impacts time measurement. The Earth rotates at a relatively constant speed, which allows us to divide time into consistent units: hours, minutes, and seconds. Additionally, Earth's rotation is the basis for time zones. As the Earth rotates, different parts of the world experience daylight and darkness at different times, hence the need for various time zones. Finally, discrepancies between our exact solar day (about 24 hours) and the time it takes for the Earth to rotate fully on its axis (approximately 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds - known as a sidereal day) are corrected through the use of leap years and occasionally leap seconds to keep our calendar and clocks accurate. So, the rotation of the Earth is fundamental to our understanding and measurement of time.

One big question why doesn't we feels the earth rotation if earth is rotating?
@kitcanyon658
@kitcanyon658 2 жыл бұрын
First of all, you would say "why don't we feel...". The answer to your question is that the human body only detects motion through forces felt from moving. But it isn't just moving, it is a movement that would cause an acceleration, not just velocity. After all, when you're flying in a commercial airplane at 500mph and there is no turbulence, you do not feel the motion. That's because your body isn't being accelerated as the earth rotates. Actually it is slightly due to centripetal acceleration but the force of this is so small you can't detect it. The earth is big. It doesn't rate very fast.

When north is summer, the south is in their winter. Time zones are because of the ANGLE of the sun. If all compasses point NORTH, sun and moon go EAST to WEST. Shouldn't the north be center of world map? Things would be understood much easier.
