Perfect introduction. Trower picked up where Hendrix left off in the same way ELO picked up where Beatles orchestral songs left off. In context 1973 Trower was a big deal. Now you're prepped for the track Bridge of Sighs. The ultimate sauce track. Moves like a glacier on Qualudes.

Fair criticism. Robin Trower is a British guitarist, James Dewar was a Scottish dude with the soulful voice. I saw the trio several times in the 1970's and even then it was obvious that Trower was a Jimi Hendrix acolyte (a really good one, tho). I prefer the atmospherics of "Bridge of Sighs" or "In this Place" to this song.

Ward... On the Hendrix acolyte comment. I feel the same as you. This song in particular could be on any of the middle of Jimi’s albums. That’s why I think he never got the props he deserved, sounds too much like Hendrix too soon after Jimi’s death. Take Stevie Ray Vaughn for example. He was getting great acclaim for his music before his untimely death.

Robin's work with Procol Harum was pretty understated and, after leaving Procol, I guess that the guy just wanted to rock out. As far as I'm concerned, using the power trio attack of Hendrix, was a pretty damned good choice. Still, I kinda prefer Robin's more melodic sides like "Daydream" or when he indulged his rhythmic chops on songs like "Caledonia". I grew up in SoCal and remember that Trower was a staple on FM radio and always a big draw during the summer concert season. I can attest that, in live venues, he blew out countless brain cells from most of us blue jean babies. I'm glad that Alex and Andy finally got around to him. He definitely deserves a look-see from anyone who enjoys classic British blues rock from that era.

Robin was originally in a band called Procul Harem. They were big over a couple albums but he felt like they were going nowhere. He heard Jimi Hendrix, and like a floodlight hit him and he realized that this was his road to take. Great guitar player. Great songwriter. Bridge of Sighs is epic.

Thanks for checking out Robin. His use of nuance, dynamic changes, one-of-a-kind thick and soulful tone - not tinny or shrill. His incredible phrasing of licks within a solo. Incredible vibrato. He is Robert Fripp of King Crimson favorite electric guitarist. He got his start with Procol Harum which is very keyboard-centric. His solo and tone in the PH song Simple Sister is unreal. Not to mention B.J. Wilson's drumming. So please continue reactions to Mr. Trower. He's in a class by himself. Tasty.

Ok, true confessions time - I was 17 when this came out in 1974, I remember my parents were out of the country, just bought this album, never heard it, invited 2 buds over for the weekend. We did some, ahem, shrooms- got toasty, and put the album on my Dads brand new Pioneer sound system, which I picked out, BTW. Well, needless to say, the first song that pops on is DOTE....it was like, whoa, WTF is this!! 😳 All I can say is, a great album...vintage stoner/Stratocaster material....meant to be CRANKED! James Dewar is the bassist/vocalist/ There are better songs - Bridge of Sighs, Too Rolling Stoned - he is a forefather to Stevie Ray - has often been accused of being over-derivative of Hendrix. He never made it to the consistent level of Hendrix or SRV, but is highly regarded in his own right, and is still touring and still great. A blues/rock pioneer. Good show, guys, as always. One of my top five favorite albums of all time. You need to hear the whole album in it's entirety. It is a total "lost in the sauce" album. That fade out goes right into the title track which is one of the most atmospheric songs of all time. The album has slower songs and rockers. Check out the whole album in it's entirety, it's the Dark Side of the Moon of blues rock in my opinion. He was criticized early on as copying Hendrix but he developed his own style and is still around today. He did not sing on this album as he only began to sing in the past 10 years or so. Yes, Too Rolling Stones and Bridge of Sighs are definitely the way to go next and I think you will hear a little bit of the envelope being pushed, if you know what I mean. I can go on for a while but my post is already very long.

"I didn't hear anything new from the genre..." Well there is a reason for that. He was one of the pioneers of that genre. He took up where Hendrix left off and moved the bar forward. Virtually everything else that came after was influenced by what they had done up to that point. So no, you won't hear anything really new but what you will hear is where it all started.

Hey guys! John Gold here! I Cant express enough, my appreciation and surprise to stumble upon your Day of the Eagle/R. Trower commentary here! Wow...2 "young guys" of current college age, rocking and "liking" Day of the Eagle! I was 12 when this album was released in 1974 and had a High School age aunt turn me on to this album. Me and my bandmates of; Axial Flow, from Raleigh NC USA, covered this classic in a rock vid (here on KZbin). Im now an (almost) 61 year old US Army vet and lifetime drummer/vocalist since before I was "12"! We agreed to produce the vid with a patriotic theme to this song (i.e.. "Living in the Day of the Eagle") to honor all USA veterans and KIA/WIA/MIA HEROES of our great nation. We posted it on Memorial Day almost 3 years ago. Its kinda like (the vid and the song) my "personal anthem". I would be so honored if you guys would search it out and give it a watch & a listen? Not asking you to showcase it...just see it and comment on (our YT channel)...and maybe Like & Subscribe? Man that would be cool and greatly appreciated! We'll be releasing our first original Axial Flow Band single next month! Watch for it. Rock On young-bros and TYVM for showcasing Day of the Eagle here, by The Great Robin Trower! ;-D

Find live versions of Bridge of Sighs, In This Place, and Daydream. You guys said that he didn't do anything you hadn't heard from other blues rock guitarists, although he did it well. But if you listen to these three songs (and many others), he doesn't sound like other blues rockers. Both in his rhythm and solo playing, he makes blues sound different from the crowd, and he has his own unique blues vocabulary. And his tone is really phat for a Strat player, focused on the midrange. He deserves more recognition.

For those of us who loved Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower filled in a void that was created when Jimi died. It was as if he'd come back, in a way, as if we weren't going to be denied Jimi Hendrix music after all. I thoroughly enjoyed his first couple of albums, best played at high volume and best enjoyed when playing the whole sides of the albums at one listening...

Critics complained that Robin sounded like Jimi Hendrix (he actually spent a few days with Hendrix at Electric Ladyland jamming and hanging out). His reply was you try to insult me by telling me I sound like the greatest guitarist ever, I'll take it. I saw him twice once with Procol Harum (he left after "Broken Barricades" to start his power trio) and second on his own was great. He also played with Jack Bruce (Cream) and Bill Lordan (Sly & the Family Stone) for two albums as BLT.

Yeah, Bridge of Sighs is his trademark song. I traveled with Robin for three U.S. tours and his fans are truly fanatics. He's still touring! Had to postpone the current tour until 2021. Sidenote: He wasn't the singer for most of his early career. This was James Dewar who has since passed. Robin is now singing on his new releases and doing a fantastic job finding his voice. -Mat
