Daytona Night Session Camaro SS 1LE chasing GT2 RS

Chased down a GT2 RS Porsche in a ‪@Chevrolet‬ SS Camaro at #daytonainternationalspeedway filmed using my ‪@GarminInt‬ Catalyst.
Car is a 2018 Camaro SS 1LE. It's on the OE spec Goodyear SuperCar 3 tires that are 200TW. It has a cold air intake, LT2 intake manifold, LT5 throttle body, ported heads, cam, new lifters and pushrods, new oil pump, timing chain, long tube headers and the OE axel back muffler exhaust. Car also has camber plates and rear toe rods on it, race track pads and DOT4 ATE racing brake fluid.

My reply keeps getting removed. So I'll try again without links.. I had a source showing the ZL1 vs SS 1LE 0-150mph is 18.4vs25.4 secs(16.9 for 911 GT3) and showing a GT3 vs ZL1.. I watch Car WOW so I know 911s are some of the quickest cars in the 1/4. I'm not saying the camaro would be quicker on the straights, but the 7 second quicker time to 150mph would definitely keep the Porsche from pulling away like it does on the SS. Times for Virginia international raceway SS 1LE 2:54:80 ZL1 1LE 2:45:00 911 GT3 2:47:00

Then, he would run him down to have him open a huge gap on the high-speed sections. Maybe i should have said from pulling away so much but in my head I meant it as opening up a huge gap.

ARH headers, Katech heads/cam, cold air intake LT5 throttle body and a LT2 intake manifold. Few other things but that's the main power adders.

You drove well, but I see a “friendly” pace with that driver. The few times you could tell he got into it was going around the white m3, and the black gts that went defensive, but even then he over took both on the outside, and let you go too lol.

What are the mods on your SS? Tires, brakes, cooling mods etc. Also, who hosted the track day?

Brakes are stock setup however I have track/racing pads on them. Tires are the OE 200TW Goodyear SuperCar 3 tires, I don't run the SC3R's because they don't last at all and are way more money for not much gain. Cooling mods aren't there it's factory Camaro. I do have a Katech head porting valves pushrods lifters etc along with their cam and American Racing Headers and some intake modifications.

@@Fa5Squad the exhaust is modded, it’s long tube headers with high flow cars but that is coupled up to my OE muffler because it has a valve in it that I think is pretty decent, plus price tag in axel backs are through the roof right now. My engine is modded, I rebuilt it by hand and installed cam, lifters, pushrods, oil pump, new timing chain, valve job, ported heads, ported intake manifold, larger throttle body and a cold air intake. It’s got some good go, all that added 100 horsepower to the rear wheels.

Your Camaro does not sound stock ,Headwork, Cam , exhaust and lightened flywheel perhaps?, Sounds like the compression is higher than stock, it also sounds like it has been gutted out to save weight or it just has a really loud exhaust, but it sounds like the sound deadening material has been removed by all the noise in the cabin.. "Come on GT2 I thought you were supposed to be fast" As he pulls away in the straights like your standing still! I get it though, he was not very good in the corners, But he is an amateur racer and likely also does not want to wreck his freaking almost $300,000 car!

You're correct, it's not stock. Heads, cam, long tube headers w/ high flow cats. and intake is mostly it. OE flywheel, compression wasn't changed because I didn't deck the heads. Nope not gutted, it's running with a full interior and is not caged. Lol and of course we talk as racers and talk junk.

I do what I am comfortable with because there's no restarts. If I wreck or hurt someone destroying both cars I take that home with me and so do they! Friendly competition is fine but overly aggressive driving bumper riding is frowned upon, it's how accidents happen. You figure out whose the fastest by lap times.

@@Cali_Man The Camaro driver was very conservative in putting the power down at apex exit, thats why , if he was a little bit agressive the GT2 wouldn´t get away, the Camaro was way better in the curves, that is imoressive considerng that the porshe was much lighter and saller car.

Porache driver is really only capable or willing (huge $$$) of using 60% of that cars capabilities. The ZL1 is a monster, but the Porsche is faster in every inch of the track with the right driver. Btw, im not reducing your skills or your car. This was fun to watch. I've gone up against many ZL1s and they're impressive to say the least

You’re good. It’s a modified SS on 200 TW tires, not a ZL1 1LE. Just a regular SS 1LE, it’s a naturally aspirated car.

Great job...love the 1LEs... I"m tracking a ZL1 1LE now started out with the SS. I bought just a standard deck lid to get the rear wing off my car for Daytona and I picked up 6mph easily. And rolled my windows up as well. My top speed at start /finish was 177.2 on my Garmin...you'r car is fast.... Awesome!!!!!

Only mods I have are Corsa CIA and Corsa Extreme axle back its all stock... I'm running Apex sm-10s w/ Goodyear 3rs. Hawk pads 70/60 motul brake fluid and track alignment. I have the Competition roll/ harness bar and Schroth belts and the Garmin catalyst for my PDR.

It must be so cool to be racing on Daytona. I've always wanted to see a pack of factory equipped cars do the oval and see what speed they could get up to. You were able to push 160-170mph fairly easy so I'd imagine 200 with some drafting might be possible in a lot of newer high end sports cars

Very nice racing skills ! Do you have any mods on your 1LE or is it stock ?

Just a few. Mostly a top end rebuild, so heads and cam, also some long tube headers. Seems to make the car a little bit more responsive as it got it up to 500 hp to the rear wheels. If I could do anything else I'd love to drop weight out of it.

@@fronkies1LECamaro Just a few? You have a fbo na setup right there. A few would have been intake and flex fuel tune calling the day. Nice ride and great driving. Are you on stock rubber or little wider with cup2s?

@@al151 Haha, it came out of necessity when I blew the engine when I really only had "just a few" modifications. Nope on stock rubber and stock widths in this video.

Takes a well sorted car and driver to reel a GT2 RS in in the corners like that. Feel like the Porsche driver is still learning his car. Impressive driving! Could listen to your exhaust note all day, that Camaro sounds monsterous!

The Porsche seems to have more HP, but not the corner speed. Tough combo to beat. You see it in F1 these days. Very nice!

The Porsche has substantially less HP than the Camaro but the Camaro comes with an even bigger difference in terms of a weight penalty. The gears in the Camaro are pretty tall too.

I'm guessing you aren't familiar with the GT2 RS. It's a literal racecar and is best known for its cornering and braking capabilities. There's a certain factor that might be considered... the driver. 🤷‍♂️

@@FakingANerve Yep, the driver, the tires, the brakes and chassis setup all figure in when watching KZbin videos of cars on track. Nobody really thinks about that. The Camaro did just fine against this car. The Porsche either has better drive off the corner or a better P/W ratio. Or is just a better driver. The driver of this Camaro seems quite good though.

@@davidsmoothington Makes sense. I had a C6 Corvette, where the jump from 3rd to 4th was substantial. The Z06 helped quite a bit by making 1st gear much taller, so 2nd and 3rd could be closer to 4th, which has a 1:1 ratio in all the C6s.

So nasty how the Porsche pulled away on the straights. The Camaro was just plain awesome to creep up on the braking.

That was the fun part, catching him in the brake zones. Just got frustrating when he wouldn't push it in the corners and slowed me down.

@@dnegel9546 surprisingly enough I've heard that the ZL1 1LE's aren't that much faster on the top end then I am. One would for sure be a few to maybe several mph faster but that GT2 should have been in the 180's and I haven't heard of a ZL1 being that fast.

It’s the driver not the car at these track days..Yes the Camaro is a great car and driver for the money. But the GT2 RS at the limit with the right pilot is unbeatable…

Dude that GT2 should have gapped you. Braking way too early & not using the whole track. Easily 5s a lap faster with equal drivers. I think you see where I’m going…you’re clearly the FAR superior driver. Very impressive that you were able to do what you did. And this is to take nothing away from 1LE…it’s an incredible car…$ for $ probably best track car you could buy. But that GT2 RS is an absolute monster.

Great driving man, The car is absolutely beautiful, Good job on battling with that Porsche.. he had to been doing 2:02s, absolute props you kept up wit him. I also hope to see you do potential Modifications to the car. 😄

No if I was catching him he likely wasn’t running faster lap times. The car and driver are more than capable of it, just gotta push a little harder. Going back this year and will hopefully have better more consistent brakes which should help me pull some time out
