Agreed. As a cartoonist, and someone who keeps trying despite his depression (which doesnt seem as pronounced here) pratt is totally in his wheelhouse as the energetic man-child John is. And John should have been a bigger focus. Shorten the movie by 30 minutes and have the movie be about the relationship with him and his pets. A lot of kids don't even know garfield yet. They don't care about him, so Why should they care about who his estranged dad is and garfield's relationship to him? This seems more like a sequel

Just saw the movie today and i personally loved it. Though, I do agree that Jon didn't get a big enough role. I personally loved this movie, and if I may be so bold, Chris Pratt did Garfield's voice superbly. The story might have elements similar to other movies that have done something similar to certain degrees, but it worked for what we got in the movie. The animation and art style all work in that it was pretty, it fit the slapstick, and it was felt faithful to the comic strip series. I also love the scenes with the train because 1) I love trains, 2) they were clever and funny, and 3) it was actually refreshing for me to see Garfield's character growth in action in the last train scene.

I'm dreading the answer to this question, but do I prefer the lack of smartphones in movies like this just because I'm old? I'm 34, so I've used smartphones for about half of my life, but I still like when animated movies of old properties just ignore the existence of smartphones. The Peanuts Movie was wonderful. Do younger people feel that way at all? I think I answered my own question. I'm just old.
@Soracayo8 ай бұрын
I didn't get a smartphone until like halfway through my teenage years (so like two years ago) so I do get that sense of comfort of going back to a simpler time. I do love the Peanuts movie too. I'm not against smartphones in movies but I'd prefer if it was dialed back and actually used in some clever way. (Or like, if a character needs to make a phone call or something)

@citruslemonade33268 ай бұрын
I'm 24 and have been using smartphones since I was like, 15 I guess? and I also don't always enjoy when they are shoved into a story like, when it's something like calling or texting (which is shown with other kinds of phones in pre-smartphone era movies) it's alright, when looking stuff up (which is usually done using a laptop/pc in older movies) it can be pretty organic too but imo it only ever feels fine when it's shown being used as a tool, nothing more; there's nothing "exciting" about scrolling through your feed for hours or placing an order online so trying to make it more animated and fun that it actually is feels forced (and also corporate dystopian pandering to ipad kids lol) there is media which is focused on smartphones to different degrees (like iirc "magical girl raising project", or all the games that use smartphone UI like Simulacra or idk, Mystic Messenger) - but it's usually either *way* more fantastical that using your phone in day-to-day is, or is just a framing device for an actually interesting story

for the olive garden joke: In the US Olive Garden offers unlimited breadsticks, which people really like (their other food isn't really that good but it is cheap), so it's funny because in a way it's relatable as it would definitely be a bit of a disappointment and inconvenience if they were to run out, but would you feel fear? No. So it's also funny because it shows how glutinous Garfield is, if the breadsticks are that big of a deal to him. Just a tip to any one visiting the US, don't go to Olive Garden it's not good, if you need cheap need decent Italian food for a lot of people (admittedly for a quite a bit more) go to Buca Di Beppo. Also if you want to try American fast food, go to In-N-Out or Whataburger. Idk what the US looks like to other countries, but if you are on Tumblr and the Denny's tumblr account makes you want to go, DO NOT, it's not that good. Also if you're visiting Hollywood, I recommend going to The Waffle (different from The Waffle House), their waffles are really good and they have a good variety and flavors of waffles, plus it's within walking distance of the Pantages Theatre. I also really recommend going to Universal studios, while pricey, it's Cheaper than Disney and is fun for all ages, even teens. If you have young children I recommend going to Knott's Berry Farm, but if you're looking for thrills, go to Six Flags Magic Mountain. But if you're set on Disney Land, go, it's always fun and has things for older and younger kids, it just costs a pretty penny and depending on when you go, the lines can definitely be long. But then again, lines are long at all parks, also Lego Land is fun for younger kids, I'd say 7-12 y/o would have the most fun. Sorry, this has turned into a California Travel Guide, but yeah, that's the reason behind the Olive Garden joke, it's pretty mediocre tbh.

I would like to point out (I’m at the phone part rn) I wouldn’t get mad if the plot wasn’t cohesive, the only time’s Garfield ever has an actual plot is for movies, otherwise the shows (as far as I remember) and comics don’t have an actual story plot, it’s literally just “fat cat eats because he’s fat, and kicks a puppy because he’s kinda a jerk, and beats up a small kitten because they’re a jerk, and has an on and off romance with a cat that’s usually pink, and causes his owner to have severe mental trauma because he’s a cat” that’s literally the most cohesive plot of Garfield ever conceived

I didn't really have high hopes from this. I thought it'd just be ok or fine, and it sounds like that's the case. But hey, at least it sounds like it'll appeal to the audience plenty

Watching this video made me look forward to the movie even more. Went into it with your review and context in mind. Even when I knew what to expect it was just even funnier once I actually saw it happen. I liked that movie. Garfield seems like the kind of franchise that translates well into modern humor. The Olive Garden joke definitely appeals to Americans. Olive Garden is a popular American chain and the breadsticks there are a VERY big deal.

I still find baffling they felt the need to get Chris Pratt Like. Dude. It's Garfield. THE Garfield. The orange cat from the comics that loves lasagna and hates Mondays. You did not need a celebrity or multiple ones to pull people in.....

Honestly I thought that this movie was amazing, not that it did anything crazy but because it's the perfect Garfield movie. Garfield is just the a- hole cat with a garbage disposal for a stomach, he's the embodiment of chaotic neutral. Every movie/any medium these days keeps trying to be the best of the best, hurting their IPs in the process. This movie is amazing because it understands who Garfield is as a character and doesn't change anything about him. It's honestly refreshing.

Yes it wasn't revolutionary but it was still good. I would rewatch it. It's easy and fun.

I quite liked this movie actually. Me and my best friend, who is a huge Garfield fan and owns a bit of Garfield merchandise himself, both enjoyed it and had a good time when we watched it in theatres. Some of the gags in it genuinely had us laughing out loud at times.

Now I'm just thinking how funny a Garfield and Nermal buddy comedy could've been- like a cross between Shrek and Secret Life of Pets.

This film was not done by Sony Pictures Animation though. Sony is just the distributor.

The original version of the Garfield movie was different. The house was originally gonna be modern theme but instead go with neutral house.

You know what would have made the first part of this movie better? If it opened with him ordering delivery on a phone and the wait time for the food is long. Then you have Garfield put down the phone and act like it's annoyingly typical of that restaurant. He says "well. This is going to take a while." and he starts reminiscing "I remember my first lasagna..." and that's when we get the cute little kitten Garfield. Have him not innately crave lasagna, but actually just come through the window of the Italian restaurant and fall directly into John's family-style dish of lasagna face first. John's still there alone, stood up by a date after already ordering food for both people. Garfield has this blissful fantasy moment about how amazing lasagna tastes, and cut to John just seeing this little kitten off in his own little world, frolicking in (and devouring) his lasagna. So John gets a to-go box and brings little kitty Garfield home, along with the lasagna. Then fade away, the screen is empty for a brief moment, and we hear the doorbell or the notification that the food has arrived. End of flashback with a relevant transition and we're back to the present. Just in that change we've packed in a ton of adorable Garfield, some extra back story (minus what the dad adds later), and it all makes more sense and so the movie flows a lot better. Hell, we could even have John get a text before meeting Garfield, saying that his date isn't showing up, ever, and have it be seen on a super old cellphone. Set up the tech thing by showing how much both phones and Garfield have changed since then. It would make more sense as to why Garfield is tech-savvy since he grew up alongside things like cellphones. Most of the audience can probably relate to the development of tech during their lives too.

Cute fact for this movie: In the Croatian dub of Garfield Baby Lazanja, he actually voiced a minor character. (It was a small cameo, but still! The reason is that he loves cats, and he owns 3 of them :D)

Gonna be honest I watched the movie today and the only thing I knew about it was Garfield at one point would be baby and that Chris Pratt voiced Garfield nothing else and it really made all the other things more surprising and the jokes that were in the trailers I didn’t watch funnier so yeah this is definitely a movie that’s better to watch without knowledge of what it is

This is not THAT bad but its also not that good but for some reason something wants me to give this movie a 7 not a 6.5, And yeah if it wasn’t for that perverted otto and that ugly ass jinx cat than this movie would’ve been an 8 heck even a 9, At first i was kinda disappointed because the movie didn’t meet my expectations but when i finished i felt like it was decent, The trailers hooked me up alot, I love the style of animation that they used, Its fairly high quality and stands out, But jokes aside the only thing that stopped this movie from competing to puss in boots 2 is the cringey scenes and the otto pauses. And the cherry on top is the lore of the movie which i loved.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I probably will in the future. And from the first trailer, I knew it wouldn’t push the boundaries, since Garfield as a franchise never really has. Garfield is just there to tell safe jokes, maybe have some heart, and eat. So I know what I’m getting into with a Garfield movie.

This movie is so corporate kid’s movie and unfunny. I loved that they thought that Snoop Dogg as a CAT, playing cliché sexy music when lovers reunite, playing the Mission Impossible music over a sequence of Ving Rhames narrating the obstacles of a heist, and the Top Gun music over the drone battle would get laughs and they fell so flat.

This movie's existence left such little an impact on me I didn't even realize there was more marketing outside the original trailer from last year. In fact I didn't even know the movie was out, and asumed it'd be late next month at the earliest. This video showing up in my recommended and showing how much over-marketing there was Is making me confused out how under the radar I somehow was.
