Useful in crisis situations, DBT distress tolerance skills assist clients in accepting reality and resisting urges stemming from unskilled behaviors.
In this presentation, Dr. Stephanie Vaughn, Psy.D., examines when and how to work with acceptance and develop distress tolerance skills that assist in not making the problem worse. DBT distress tolerance skills assist clients in accepting reality and resisting urges stemming from unskilled behaviors.
Here are some highlights we’ve extracted from this video:
1. Distress tolerance skills are used in crisis situations.
2. Popular distress tolerance skills include: the TIP Skill, STOP Skill, Half-Smile, Willing Hands, and Radical Acceptance

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude (I've been in therapy for over 6 years), I'm just wondering... 12 years of doing it and you still have to attend therapy? It's so discouraging to me, because I've been on this journey for 6 years already (with different approaches of therapy) and the thought of having to do this for the rest of my life is disheartening... I'm tired.

Very informative and clear 👌 thanks a lot! I have a question though, I'm ashamed to ask it to my therapist: as for the TIP skill, should we do the 3 steps corresponding to the letters in the very T-I-P order, or should we use only one of these three tool depending on the circumstances? Because after the cold water dive in, I find it hard to exercise 20min right after. Thanks a lot, sorry if I didn't get it! 😅

I am interested in your input on something- lets say someone has just been informed a loved one has died. Would it be better to apply these immediately, or give themselves a minute to break down and sob before applying these skills?
@zell2600
@zell2600 2 жыл бұрын
Applying these skills doesn't mean they'll not breakdown, they'll still be sobbing their hearts out and that's pretty much normal, the difference is that they're at the same time grieving their loved one at the same time which regardless if they do or don't apply those skills would have to face the reality of it eventually, both live and faced the result of reality

@@lisajohnson6351 agreed, grief counseling could be something that is more helpful to you. DBT is helpful as a bandaid to reduce symptoms in crisis, but it doesn’t address the deeper issues causing your symptoms. In order to make lasting change, I think addressing deeper causes for the pain you experience can be helpful

If I can get some very great music going it helps me. I look for the silliest songs ever made. I actually spend a lot if time searching for music. The emergency list that's insane amounts of say "Korn* ect. like the big growl songs make those noises from deep in the diaphragm. Those for anger and heart fluttery life ending songs. Get that feeling out. Then to the crazy disco songs one hit wonders song. That make you laugh. If you tv it's about the same rule. But don't watch any jail and oppressive type crimes. No horror or thrills just comedy not mix with stand up..

thought i'd hear something new/useful, but it's the same stuff. The most useless and even absurd is the whole 'radical acceptance.' -- sure, "Acceptance is the key" but if it were so easy, people wouldn't need these videos. But no one, not one person I've met in my life, including professionals, can explain just HOW do you accept an intolerable and/or unacceptable situation? ... They don't have the answer, neither does this video. They just keep telling you to accept the problem, but that's the whole pt: people cannot accept intolerable situations. And as usual, they give stupid examples like 'locking oneself" out of a car or dropping an egg: seriously. Those wouldn't even be on a list of "problems" for people for which they'd need therapy. Of course, if an egg is dropped on the floor, no one will stand there in need of "TIP" and "STOP" and "radical acceptance." All these 'therapists' like to use such simplistic and hence meaningless examples. But when someone faces a serious, grave situation they struggle with, all these therapists do is recite these "techniques' but never reveal the secret of "HOW" to accept 'radically."
@hannalowercase5928
@hannalowercase5928 2 жыл бұрын
i think you might be misunderstanding the situations in which one would use those skills. also, DBT is basically designed for people with overwhelming emotions, so getting locked out of a car could very much trigger something that would need a radical acceptance response!
