As an African dude, I freaking love Chocolove (Joco as I knew him) , though I it probably would've gone different were it not for the changes in localization. He's at first a gag character but his backstory with saving the world via laughter was surprisingly reasonant with me. Plus I always loved how that redemption arc still came with consequences and how he comes together around the end. I'm glad I was shielded from some of the unsavory elements but in isolation this character works for me.

EDIT: Ok, I forgot about the Song of Funbari Spa. Honestly, it kinda made sense for Chocolove to be in prison there for me. He killed people in cold blood (as clearly shown in his backstory), so him going to prison for it made sense. The dialogue even hints that it was somewhat voluntary - he repents for his sins. Let's face it, there is no way a powerful shaman like Chocolove could be kept in prison if he didn't decide to be there. Giving the only (major) black character such a backstory in the first place is another thing entirely, but finally going to prison for it fit with both his backstory and his characterization.

One criticism is that I feel like some of your comments show that you're looking at this franchise with the perspective of an american instead of looking at the bigger picture. You mention how Chocolove has no fans and noone likes him but here in Latin American for example noone even tho Chocolove's design or name were racist, we all tho it was just a joke on the stereotype so we had no issue with him at all. Another example is you mentioning how few people remember the franchise and again that may be the case for the US but the reason it got so many games it was because it was big in Japan and the anime is actually well remembered in other parts of the world. Just like Saint Seiya being a huge anime franchise but barely anyone in the US knows about it. The series was even going to get a remake a few years ago because of how popular it was but the author cancelled it because he tho it may not turn out the best.

Slight correction to what you said about Shaman King Power of Spirit. It did have a versus mode, but it unlocked after completing the campaign. The roster featured the main cast plus the golden villains you fought throughout the story - around 20 fighters if I remember correctly. It was a pretty fun mode to play against my friends back in the day and was by far the best anime fighting game we had played at the time (we're tekken fans so we liked the slower paced combat). The downside to versus mode is that you could only play against your friends. There were no computer controlled fighters. Good video nonetheless, I love Shaman King and wish he would have succeeded.

Ok hollllddd up. Chocolove and Lyserg are both in my top three and I agree that they’re both super cool but you can’t just call horohoro a waste of space. That’s just a no-no. I would have sold my soul to the spirit of fire’s breakfast menu with no hesitation for lyserg to have more screen time (specifically with his time in the x-laws away from the main characters. he’s my favorite, I love him to unreasonable levels) …but not at the cost of horohoro or any other awesome character. And I don’t even like horohoro that much! But he had a very important role in the story, is an intriguing character, and in the kanzenban release of the manga, (i don’t know if it was out for english readers when you wrote your comment) his backstory is more detailed and it’s actually quite sad but interesting. You should check it out, maybe you’ll appreciate ice boy more.
@needlefrick68573 жыл бұрын
@@rodrigocaceres2879 he does learn his lesson, and he has all the right to be a drama queen after what he’s been through. His reactions to his pain are realistic if anything. I did feel pissed off at him in the beginning, but he mellows out quick. I think he tries his best to be less annoying, he uses logic more later on, especially near the end. Of course, not in the 2001 anime, in that he was a prick until the very end, where I began to barely tolerate him. But manga-wise? He was a bit bitchy, but also understandable. Thinking about his backstory, i don’t know how he was able to even function after what happened to him. I think turning into a power-lusting traitor but then improving himself was a better route then completely breaking and ending up god-knows-where, possibly dead. He also had a very hard time in the X-LAWS. if you paid enough attention, you’ll realize there was no way he wasn’t traumatized there too. The more I think about it the more uncomfortable it makes me. The way he was treated and the crazy amounts of brainwashing that turned him from annoying and cocky to screwed-up and shattered is just depressing to me. I really admire him for being able to build himself out of the mess he’d gotten himself in. His journey through hell was an especially jarring one in my opinion, but he really developed himself there. He’s really come a long way. but I can definitely understand why for some people, that still doesn’t make him likable. In the end, he still did the things he did and first impressions last. Even in the end, he’s nit perfect. Also, some people would rather not look past his first impressions in favor or who he became later on, and that’s fine. I can’t force you to like him. But I think he’s cool 👍 Thank you for coming to my tedtalk :D
@rodrigocaceres28793 жыл бұрын
@@needlefrick6857 I didn't say that he doesn't learn his lesson, I said that he was unlikeable for most of the series and even after getting better he still was the least likeable for me. He was somewhat good at the end, just no on the level of likeable that everyone else was for me. Also, you may not notice this, but just as you think that "some people" might not be looking past his first impressions, maybe you are excusing that character too much because you liked certain traits about him. You may think that he "had every right to be that way" but considering that there's some characters that go through similar situation and aren't the same way it just makes sense that some of us prefer those characters and their different developments. Of course his reactions are realistic, but having "every right to" doesn't force people to act a certain way, and it's precisely the people that don't excuse themselves by their own tragedies and that don't take it on others that I personally find more endearing. Those are realistic too, just less common and more admirable to me. I don't expect perfect characters, it's their flaws that make them human and relatable, but Lyserg had simply to many negative qualities for me, and on top of that I found him the most boring of the group. In the end it's just a matter of opinion, and if it's true that you said that you understand why some of us don't like him then you are aware that it's as simple as "different strokes for different folks"and not necessarily not knowing what you said or not looking past first impressions. There's no explanation from you or me that makes our opinions about how we feel about a character right or wrong. Thanks for the polite reply. Not sure what a tedtalk is though.
@needlefrick68573 жыл бұрын
@@rodrigocaceres2879 ah, “ted talks” is basically just a show where some guy gives speeches called ted talks. I was referencing it, sorry if that was confusing. You have a great point. Sometimes, even if a character’s reaction to a traumatic experience is realistic, it can still make them unlikeable. When someone has many negative traits, even if there are logical reasons why, it only makes sense for them to have less fans than some of the more likable and admirable characters who respond differently to their circumstances. I probably should have realized this is why not too many people like Lyserg 😅-The fact that I love his negative traits probably puts me in the minority. I shouldn’t expect others to feel the same way. Hearing this from you really opened my mind up though, thanks 👍

This and Zatch Bell r in a pretty similar boat. Despite their quality characters and story (Zatch, i find, overall better), very forgotten and ppl dont know of their shotty games, let alone the gud ones

I could have sworn Power of Spirits was better, but the moment I saw Merril refer to herself in 3rd person it felt like glass shattering.

I feel like you were a little too excited about the "long swords" and maybe there's something you're not quite telling us. All jokes aside, another awesome video and you're completely right that it is in the hands I'll content creators to try and shed light on forgotten franchises.
