I think there's definitely a difference between Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2's playstyle. While Pikmin 1 concentrates on you having to achieve as much as possible (raising Pikmin, gathering as much as possible and clearing enemies) in as little time as possible, Pikmin 2's cave concept concentrates on you managing a set number of Pikmin to clear as much as possible. While one focuses on time management, the other focuses on resource management. I personally actually gotta say that Pikmin 2's caves were my favorite part, so I guess I just like resource management. Pikmin 3 might've been kind of unsure what it really wants to be near the end. Most of Pikmin 3 is similarly structured to Pikmin 1. But the ending section seems alot like Pikmin 2's caves system with having you manage your resources rather than your time, even if it is a pressing issue in this section. I can see how many new players might've been a bit frustrated at that, since it throws these curveballs at you with having a not easily accessible base (so you gotta manage your Pikmins better than ever), furthermore having the enemies not be able to give you more Pikmin and also have an AI chase you. All these new things while also having the regular time limit, could easily lead to messy situations. On a different note Pikmin 3 has always been pretty messy for me. Especially the boss fights had my Pikmin scattered all over the place, with me having to spend alot of time to regroup all, which allows the boss to get in another attack. The first two Pikmin never had that kind of situation happen to me, so I personally kinda wonder why Pikmin 3's bosses give me so much trouble. The second boss was really the only organized boss battle I had in that game. Maybe it lies in the bosses changing the terrain every so often but I can't say I know why the boss battles feel so different in each game. But those would be my thoughts on the differences of the games and why Pikmin 2 wasn't as good in your eyes as the other two
@Aethozoid5 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. I no-death-ran the first two Pikmins no problem. Well... not *no* problem, but I was able to do it. With Pikmin 3 I just couldn't. The controls are just too different and don't work with the way I play. I like the addition of both the lock-on and charge mechanics, but losing the C-stick swarming made it incredibly difficult to avoid enemy attacks and losing some of the camera angles sometimes complicated aiming. It made playing feel very clumsy and like I had very little control over whether or not my Pikmin were killed. The Quaggled Mireclops fight had me begging for the C-stick controls back. And I know there's dodging, but... I just forget to use it. But at the same time, I feel like using it wouldn't have made enough of a difference. Personally, I find the C-stick controls superior to having both dodging and charging. It doesn't have to *replace* those mechanics, but I desperately hope C-stick controls make a return in the next installment. There are plenty of stuff with the video I agree with, but I still stand with Pikmin 2 as my favorite.

Pikmin 2 is great

I found pikmin 3 way easier, and it was the only game I found where there really were strategies to avoid losing pikmin (eg throwing pikmin at the bulborbs eyes to interrupt it if it grabs some pikmin) while in pikmin 1 and 2 pikmin would just get snatched and devoured instantly, without giving you anything to do about it. I personally found pikmin 3 much cleaner and deliberately constructed. And the dodge whistle is actually really good. It's your fault and not the games if you forget to use it.
@Aethozoid5 жыл бұрын
@@jayman5234 I partially agree with you, and I do love the additional bulborb weakness, as it addresses the problem of there being little that can be done to avoid them eating Pikmin if you're not be able to kill it quickly enough, and there are probably more examples like that that I'm forgetting. After revisiting the game to complete it with 100% of the fruits gathered some time after posting my last comment, I realized that I hadn't grabbed the dodge whistle that was in the Distant Tundra and had done my first playthrough of the game without ever having it. I don't think the whistle being something a player can completely miss is /inherently/ flawed... probably... but it actually accentuates a bigger problem I have with the game compared with the prequels, and that's its approach to delivery of narrative. *SPOILERS* In the past two Pikmin games, the stakes were relatively low when compared to an entire civilization being on the brink of starvation. In the main story of Pikmin 3, there was never any breathing room. Not counting needing to save Brittany and Charlie, the whole way through the game you needed to find the Cosmic Drive Key. Without that, everything would be screwed. With that in mind, there's little incentive to gather fruit beyond what you would need to consume at the end of each day. Why would you bother gathering fruit when your ability to bring it all home is at stake in the first place? And then when you do get the Cosmic Drive Key, the game just ends. I see no reason why the Koppaites would need to leave immediately after receiving the Key while not having enough food to feed their people. For my first playthrough, I just made sure I had enough fruit to survive and I focused on what seemed more important. Then I got the worst ending. And as for the difference between the pressure in Pikmin 3 and in the latter half of Pikmin 2 when you needed to find Louie, you had no idea where Louie might've been, so the pressure was lower, but constant and actually /encouraged/ for you to explore (albeit perhaps at a faster pace). In Pikmin 3 you always had a lead on what to do next, so why not focus on that and skip the deep exploration? Had the story given me a little breathing room, I think it would have been more likely that I would have found the dodge whistle at least at some point. And I don't mean to shift blame completely off myself, I was probably focused too much on using mechanics I had learned in the previous titles without mentally allowing myself the chance to learn the new mechanics introduced. Although, I still stand by my opinion that the C-stick controls should be kept alongside dodging, locking on, and charging. And I still do think the implementation of those mechanics is rather flawed (e.g. exiting lock-on mode takes away player-camera control for a few seconds; lock-on inhibits view of other enemies / surrounding hazards / Pikmin that are out of scene; exiting out of lock-on mode in the middle of charging causes Pikmin to stop charging; charging takes away your ability to consign just a few Pikmin to a task without separating them; dodging movement can be somewhat unpredictable; possibly other issues I'm forgetting). But I suppose this is just an extended explanation of why I don't prefer Pikmin 3. Sorry for the long rant. (Also I didn't even touch on the exclusion of the Piklopedia, that's a whole other thing.)
@moony22495 жыл бұрын
@@jayman5234 I agree that Pikmin 3 was easier to play. Enemies had exploiatble weaknesses that also required the different Pikmin types at times, which allowed for alot of strategic plays (Flying enemies falling to the ground after getting with a Rock Pikmin was a great idea in my opinion), however I'm not sure if I'd call Pikmin 3 "cleaner". It looks more polished, having enemies light up a bit when you target them made hitting them so much easier and the Pikmin AI is much smarter now. So why am I not saying that the game is cleaner? Mostly because the earlier two titles gave you more control over your team. Having C-Stick Controls gave you the option to choose in what formation the Pikmin should move in, which allowed for more control over your team and also an essential option to reduce casualties. I personally abandoned the dodge whistle pretty early, since I found myself having more trouble whenever some Pikmin didn't dodge along with the rest. Swarming was indeed a neat mechanic, however also somewhat flawed in itself. Having it linked to the lock-on mechanic, made for some confusing moments. I'm sure everyone had that moment, where you were already locked on a boss but out of routine, you lock-on again, which removes your lock-on mode, and start swarming the enemy but instead made every Pikmin exit the team. Obviously that's my fault but it's still somewhat of an issue. Not to mention that Rock Pikmin have their unique attribute of flying away from an enemy after hitting it once, which scatters them all around the place (Which is also why Rock Pikmin are probably my least favorite Pikmin). Not to get me wrong. The lock-on mode plus swarming mistake is always my fault and I absolutely love the swarming function. However I would trade that in for the C-Stick Controls anytime, because of the aforementioned issue of "control". All in all, I believe that Pikmin 3 didn't play easier because of better controls, but more because the environment of the world was made easier to compensate for the lack of gameplay elements that were present in the earlier two titles

BUT I do want to point out I felt as though this game was probably harder for you than I thought it was. I've never had much of an issue with a lot of your complaints (not that they arent valid :3) I feel like after a little practice, these are all able to be accounted for. Even the messiness of these fights can be curbed if not prevented entirely with thoughtful setup, some very fast fingers and quick thinking. (Even the first game to a degree) And I do want to mention the time limit on the third game.. I've played through maybe two or three times and the only time I ever even think about it is the first day after Louie steals everything. Which btw, he eats NONE of. So you'll get back all 30 some odd juices at once... He didn't even drink one a day or something... You get him back in like a day or two, three or four if you're slow, so if anything it gives me a reason to try for a few in game days only for this miniscule challenge to get completely ironed out in an hour. So yeah I never found the time limit as something I needed to consider. While I'm glad it's technically there, If you have any sense of urgency at all it should be a braindead achievement to not starve. The only way I could manage is if I actually attempted to lose. Plus, since you start the game with three premade juices.. and the first day gives a strawberry, maintaining the three day supply... I think it's far too easy. Too many times I actually wished there were harder challenges because I'd have an overwhelming surplus of pikmin that just wouldn't die.. kind of making it pointless to carry anything back except fruit. Quaggled Mireclops was my bitch though- I need this "next pikmin game" to be like the Dark Souls or Bloodborne of the Nintendo universe... I honestly think pikmin 3 was soooo much better. Pikmin 1 was underdeveloped, pikmin 2 had too much bs, but pikmin 3 looked beautiful, had great combat in my opinion, the bosses were the best in the series, and so much more balanced, and the go here function was super rewarding, it kinda made the game for me. The final boss was a bit annoying but super satisfying to nail.

The thing I should mention is that the reason why blue pikmin are found so late in pikmin 3 is because there was originally going to be a 5th marshland area that would be mapped between twilight river and the distant tundra but it was scrapped and put into the garden of hope because they wanted pikmin 3 to be a launch title for the Wii U

Pretty great analysis of the series (never played Pikmin 2 but I'll take your word on it), though I have to disagree on the new pikmin introduced in pikmin 3 being entirely balanced. They definitely made an effort to give the rock and flight pikmin specific weaknesses, but the flying ones in particular didn't fit a lot of the level design and straight up trivialized some of the games puzzle sections. Sure they do less damage, but their ability to both float over water and be commanded to objects in high places totally invalidates the practical uses of blue and yellow pikmin in the overworld. It seems like a pretty huge oversight to me and was one of the main reasons I found Pikmin 3's challenge mode legitimately more engaging than the main game itself.
@meursaulty66725 жыл бұрын
Don't take his word for it, Pikmin 2 is the best of the series. True, it's entirely a dungeon crawler but the enemy designs are the best of the series, the Piklopedia is a fun touch, and I spent days upon days playing the local multiplayer, which in some ways is better than Pikmin 3 multiplayer.
@SpaceLobster215 жыл бұрын
Pikmin 1: really good, but low content Pikmin 2: Louie... Oh yeah, and I can't forget to mention EXPLOSIONS Pikmin 3: really good, but the bosses have a weird difficulty thing. Boss 1: easy to kill, but ends up eating lots of pikmin and can take a while to beat. Boss 2: easy if you turn on all of the lights before attacking it. Boss 3: just rush it every time it comes out of the ground or sinkholes. Extremely easy. Boss 4: If you take in an army of flying pikmin, just rush it when it tries to attack, but if it's doing the drill attack you should get out of the way first. Boss 5: This took me 4 in-game days to beat and I lost over 250 pikmin to it. It wasn't clear how much you needed to hit the feet to make it fall, they kept changing color for seemingly no reason. Boss 6: oof. The chase was incredibly difficult and time consuming, and when it came to the boss itself, it did an obnoxious amount of damage to my captains.

Yeah the bombs Rocks were BS so it was best to carry one pikmin with you and bait out the traps and use your punch. also the balancing in pikmin 2 was bad electrical hazards are instant one hit kills on all pikmin except yellow it pretty much negated using any other pikmin unless for pure necessity, carrying purples was pretty op as well but it made you play extremely careful. Pikmin 3 is easily my least favorite in the series. Its only serious upside are the graphics. The puzzles are bare-bones. Every solution is so obvious, they might as well be screaming the solution in your face. My sentiments are completely opposite to yours; puzzles are Pikmin's weakest asset, while combat is (or, was) the strongest. "Oh no, I have to break an electric gate. I wonder if I need yellow pikmin!" "Oh no, I need to break a crystal. I wonder if I need rock pikmin!" "Oh no, I need to reach something beyond a gap. I wonder if I need flying pikmin!" And so on. Meanwhile, in Pikmin 2, there weren't puzzles, so much as obstacles in intimidating areas. An area is blocked off by an electric gate, yet it's across a body of water, meaning you'll have to find some way around. Or, you will see a treature sitting in what appears to be an open area, only for a breadbug to fight you for it as soon as you get close. In Pikmin 3, there are no lurking threats. Pikmin 2 gives you the feeling that you're truly out in the wild, and you're only truly safe when you're in the small area your ships are in. When you leave that area, anything from bulbears to arachnorbs can come hunting for you. If you don't get rid of bulbears by processing them, they'll wake back up and hunt you down. In Pikmin 3, pretty much the only serious enemy in the path was a bulborb. There are meager enemies in branching paths, but they're never a surprise. It shocks me that you think bosses in Pikmin 3 are not only good, but sometimes FRUSTRATING. The bosses in Pikmin 3 are a joke. The only time you're in harms way is because of the removal of the C-stick. They require you to do bare-bones puzzles at times. Oh, this boss is wearing crystal armor? I wonder if I should use the pikmin I just obtained that breaks crystals??? They just showed me this moth gets hurt by lights, maybe I turn on the lights??? And frankly, the final boss was the only boss that actually looked like a Pikmin enemy. Somehow you manage to completely reverse every one of my opinions about the game. Every other boss, short of maybe the meerslug, look like whacky fictional video game bosses, rather than slightly whimsical but ultimately natural monsters. The Plasma Wraith is an obvious reference to the Water Wraith in Pikmin 2, who's probably the most intimidating boss from that game, although maybe you just never came across it.

I've only played pikmin 1 and boy did it take me awhile. I was worried about my pikmin a lot and trying to get at least 1 or more ship parts. It wasn't going well, so with my new found knowledge I restarted the entire game and I was ahead by a day, sometimes two days. I'm going to get the other two, pikmin 2 first since my gamepad charger is broken, but I'll probably won't be as worried since there's unlimited time. 1. Bosses in pikmin 1 seem to be apart of the environment. What I mean is that they don't have a special arena for the most part, no cutscenes either. So when I ran into one I was surprised since most bosses in most games have a cutscenes stating it's name. Not sure pikmin 2 but pikmin 3 isn't the same which just doesn't fit the theme of pikmin imo. 2. Does anyone know why they got rid purple and white pikmin? Purple seem obvious but Rock pikmin are kind of the same. White pikmin seem like a good idea, they should've brought it back. 3. When he said that they fixed the pikmin distraction issue; I feel like it was supposed to be an issue. Think about it, these pikmin aren't sure if they trust you fully yet. Then they start listening to the captains more and more as the series continues. It seems that the pikmin now trust these type of people.

But It's Poorly Animated purples count as ten pikmin when carrying things but are really slow. They also stun enemies and do a lot of damage and can latch on to enemies. Purples will come from candy pop buds. They also aren't thrown in an arch they do half of an arch and then slam down on whatever's there. They do not have any resistance. They got nerfed in pikmin three though. Rock pikmin don't latch on they continuously ram into an enemy, like you said they brake glass, and cannot be crushed. Rock's are normal speed, are grown naturally, count as one pikmin and are thrown in an arch. They both very useful in their games.
@juckt_mich_nich4992 Жыл бұрын
i love the dungeons in pikmin 2 and they really arent that hard and the combat youre talking about isnt just "calculting risk". you can actually beat any enemy in this game without losing pikmin, you just need to know how and thats where the difficulty in every pikmin game comes in. its about knowing HOW to deal with an enemy, not just stupidly throwing your pikmin at him hoping for the best. You can even use the second player to distract the enemy. Its a tactical game, the skill that is required in combat is also tactial, if you lose your pikmin, its because of a bad tactic. Thats exactly why i love the pikmin franchise, because every time you play the game you learn something new. Im playing pikmin 2 for the fourth time now and this time im doing a no pikmin loss and no sprays challange and its actually pretty easy if you know how to abuse the specific strengths of each pikmin type and the strength of the captains.

Pikmin 2 is often the highest rated game in the series. And personally, it is my favorite game of all time. I just love the difficulty curve in the caves (well, maybe except for Submerged Castle's sublevel 4, but still). There are also the facts that it is still the longest and most complete game in the series (the most collectibles and the largest challenge mode, even more than 3). And the soundtrack is pretty whimsical too.

I beat the Sanbelching Meerslug after some practice. Get 4 rock bombs. Get a mixture of Pikmin, but mostly red. When it opens up its mouth, toss in a bomb.
