About the locator... I always thought it was mainly there to serve as a breadcrumb trail, as I never really felt discouraged from exploring. I actually had the opposite feeling, seeing as I felt free to rummage around hallways and non-critical rooms, knowing I could just hit a button and basically be told "Whenver you're ready to get back on track, stuff's in this direction." I never once got lost in Dead Space, and barely consulted the maps.

The most disturbing thing about this game is the baby clones being created for bioprosthetic limbs in chapter 2. The haunting sound of crying babies mixed into the droning ambience is hypnotic. This game is something else. P.S. That closing statement ending with a punch from the soundtrack played at the exact moment when Birkin injects the G-Virus is top-tier production.

28:50 As to the guide path mechanism I absolutely love this feature bc it shows you where to go, that way you can explore every other area before moving towards the next objective. It pisses me off in games when they won't tell you this is a doorway with an un-skipable cutscene that won't let you go back and explore the previous area. This mechanic in Dead Space is always my go to for how games should operate showing you "The way" and "The Not way". I understand where your coming from but I always found this extremely helpful in navigating and exploring other places in the environment.

I adore the floor line system, I used it primarily to make sure I wasn't going in a direction that was going to lock me off from exploring. Too many games punish exploration by locking areas off if you accidentally picked the progression path to explore first and its something that puts me off linear games, so having the line eased my anxiety about that. It was also helpful for re-orienting in 0g areas if things got too hectic and you lost your landmarks or orientation.

Dead Space is one of those games I replay at least once a year. It’s just that solid of an experience. And it’s just enough time in between to get surprised and scared when the necromorphs burst out of vents. There’s one part where you can see shadows of necromorphs in the distance and you know you have no other choice but to approach it. Man does it freak me out every time even after all these years. Dead space came out when I started high school. And now at age 30, it still is one hell of a ride.

I think the vent crashing would have been more effective if you couldn't tell, at a glance, which vents were valid entry points for the gribblies and which ones weren't. After the third or fourth time, you can enter a room and *immediately* identify where the monsters will be coming from when you trip the event flag.

I am of the mind that Dead Space is not simply the singular masterpiece of survival horror around which every other game in the genre maintains an elliptical orbit. It is the pinnacle of diagetic design, a flawless fusion of fashion and function. Well just going by the most basic of what people usually millennials and zoomers herp derp out as "survival horror" Dead Space is anything but survival horror.....Which tells me the majority of people who cry about survival horror don't actually know what it actually is, beyond "hurrrr i plaed Rezident Evul when I wuz 10" OR "hurrr I plaed Silant Hill when i wuz 10". Using those "special" people's definition Dead Space is not survival horror in any way. Its freeze, grab shoot off limbs, get buried in ammo repeat...Using the "special" people's definition "survival horror" can only be "survival horror" is if the character is completely incompetent, completely useless, unable to even competently swing a small object, has extremely limited access to guns and ammunition regardless of the setting, even IF its a police station, military base, space ship that has an armory etc.....Somehow IF your at all competent or capable its "action horror" because there in again millennials and zoomers have no clue what survival horror or horror really is, these are the same people who generally call things like Scream, I know What You Did Last Summer etc "horror films".

I made a friend for life in my local comic book shop after they overheard me talk about how much I love this game. I had the opportunity to give an extra copy of the first issue of the Dead Space comic to the keyboardist/singer of The World is a Beautiful Place… who I had a crush on and knew they were a fan of Dead Space as well. I know we connect more to those characters, but when we look at the style of combat and high linear story telling. That and Callisto are the same, very repetitive enemies and a pretty basic but I would say satisfying combat system. Like TLoU2 I think Callisto sets a good foundation to dive into the skill tree more and go into more intricate combos ie. God of War. Not that crazy, but I’ve accepted that this is more action than horror on my play through. So embrace that further imo.

I remembered being so wowed by this game when it first came out. Watching my roommates in college playing through this it was just such an interesting horror experience. I loved that the HUD was on Isaac himself, and the weapons were so out-there compared to your standard guns. Really hoping that remake lives up to the original.

Dead Space made me remember what it's like to want to run from enemies when the only way out is through them, or the feeling of being scared to move forward through an uneasy corridor after hearing metal scraping, creaking, or howling (which is all the freaking time in this game lol). It's definitely up there in some of my favorite games of all time. It took everything I loved about the first Resident Evil, and then topped it off with all my favorite space-horror vibes from my favorite movies. A masterpiece. A shame Calisto Protocol isn't living up to the legacy so much. I came here to remember why I was so excited for it lol

Coming to an arcade near you, Dead Code. Dismantle mean comments by using your mouse and keyboard. Upgrade your cooling system from a measly aircooled fan to a Vodka cooled closed liquid cooling system. From the creator of Dad Space: Mancave creator. Dead Sace 1 and 2 are some of the coolest games ever made, the way the developers pulled things off is impressive. The regenerating enemies sure was stressful. The silouette of the USG Ishimura is such a great and thought out design.

I'll forever remember the original Dead Space as being my first real foray into horror games. As someone who had never played anything remotely like this, the sounds, ambience, visual storytelling and sheer coldness of the Ishimura, and the slow descent into madness of everyone within the game is something that I'll always remember and look back on fondly. It's a shame that Callisto Protocol was such a letdown, but I'm hopeful the Dead Space Remake can recapture a lot of the charms that made the original stand out, and I look forward to your look through that game too.

Fun fact, every single corpse is a lethal weapon. It's not just the monster that's the problem, the cells of all the nercomorphs wants you dead, and the flesh on the walls and floors is actually the liquefied remains of the crew, and i think the enemies are literally reused remains of the dead.

If they remake Dino crisis, I think if any sequels follow it would be best if they were original and not remakes of 2 or 3. I know people love 2 but it's a big departure from 1 and I believe it would be best to have the series more consistent with what it wants to be.
