In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you an aggressive variation in one of the most popular chess openings, the Two Knights Defense.
After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5, most of your opponents hope for the Fried Liver Attack which happens after 4...d5 5.exd5 Nxd5?! But instead of 5...Nxd5, there is a tricky variation called the Fritz Variation which happens after 5...Nd4.

Puzzle Solution- Sacrifice the bishop with Bxf3. If pawn takes, then queen g1 check, rook has to take, then rook takes back on g1 with checkmate. If after Bxf3 the rook takes the bishop, then rook e1 with check, queen has to take on e1, followed by queen g2 checkmate!

Bxf3 is the winning move.. If they take with the pawn, you have the checkmate after sacrificing the queen on g1 checkmate there.. If they take with the rook, you go with Te1 for the check.. Taking with the queen is checkmate with Qxg2 putting the rook in between is checkmate by taking the rook. White could also play after Bxf3, Qg5 but that looses to Bxg2 , Kxg2 and Qc6 giving check and pinning the queen with the rook.

I don't think I need to even try this to figure out that my opponents, especially at the low level I have, will NEVER, and I mean *_NEVER!_* make all these moves just like we see here. It just won't happen. It's the thought that counts though, I guess. Edit: Even IF I get lucky enough to get to the _exact_ position at 2:28, all my opponent need do is to castle kingside and my kingside hopes are completely dashed. So that just leaves me taking the bishop and trying to win the queen on c2. They will NOT cooperate and at best, I MAY _every once in a while_ end up 3 or 4 points up with a decent position when it's all said and done. That means I will risk losing dozens of GAMES, just trying to get up a piece _once in a while._ It's not worth it to me, although, there are some instructive tactics discussed here, but that's about it. Cheers.

Ok i think i finally found it for good. Remember that other comment where i said Bxf3 was a nad move? Screw that comment then. So, i said that after Bxf3 whites could just simply play Rg1, which exposes the rook to a bishop attack, at first i said that achieved an even position for whites right? Wrong, so after Bxg1, king will recapture there on g1, after that play queen g2, which will lrad into a queen exchange, after the trade you are now allowed to play rook e1 check, the queen is pinned, and after the king moves, doesn't matters where, play rook g2 checkmate. Edit: or simply after Kxg1 play rook e1 right away, forcing the queen to capture, then queen g2 checkmate.

maybe I'll test drive THIS instead of the COMPLICATED rousseau/luccini/jaenish-schliemann/steinitz scotch etc. repertoire I wanted to quit the scandinavian because just the rousseau was too much of a move order nightmare to learn quickly. I'm loving the "exact opposite of *'slav-walling'* " nature of the englund gambit > hartlaub-charlick gambit, but I only get to play it once or twice a day and the frustration of being stuck having to transpose the scandinavian into closed sicilian, pavnov attack and other passive positional crap is making having to play black 2-3 times in a row, never getting the open game I want unbearable. hopefully this'll be a fun change of pace at the very least

For puzzle: Bxf3 wins I think. If G pawn takes, …Qg2 Rxg2, …Rxg2# If rook takes, …Re1+ Qxe1, …Qxg2# If ignored (e.g. any move by white except queen trade), Bxg2# unless white queen takes bishop on d4, then Qg2# Finally if Qg5 offering queen trade, I’m not sure how to cohesively force mate but maybe something like …Bxg2+, Kxg2 …Qxg5+, Bxg5 …Rxg5+, Kh1 …Bxb2 and wins rook Edit: spent 10 minutes big braining this on the toilet before reading the other comments

Without looking, I think 1. ... Bxf3. If 2. gxf3 Qg1+ and mate in 1. If 2. Rxf3 Re1+ and mate in 1. If Rg1 or Rf2, bishop takes rook and mate follows. If almost anything else, 2 ... Bxg2+ and mate follows.

GM Smirnov give very nice lessons, just like this one!...i use one of the principles he taught to show up mistake/s that a well known IM is making in a video of his here on youtube...he(that IM replied to me that i mustn't take things as philosophical and that i must rather use calculation!...i thanked him for his advice but i said i want to see for myself why i couldn't play a specific move i had in mind!...anyway long story short i did some analysis(with the help of an enjin) and i found that his whole video was based on flaws in his analysis so i posted my analysis on there in the comment section...but now he is as quiet as a mouse because the evidence is clear to see!!...i will post a link if somebody is interested🤠

bxf3 is forced mate. Although I didn't know that until the Engine told me, I probably would've played it anyways (I like to play sacrifices in attacks regardless if they're good or not). It's mate in 6 after, with gxf3, qg5, (and here we don't trade queens to win a bishop, we keep applying pressure) qd3, (here white can't defend the rook capture checkmate and the queen so they sac the queen) nd2 (trying to hold the position barely and activate the knight and rook for the futile defense), rxg5 (we take the queen), rg1 (barricading the king), (and instead of capturing the rook and luring the king out, we play another move because if we captured the rook, white could instead of recapturing the bishop activate the knight, and even tho it's still forced mate, it went from mate in 3 to mate in 6) bxg2+, rxg2 (forced move), re1+ (adding a rook in play to add even more pressure), nf1, rxf1+/qxf1+, qf1# (there's about 3 or 4 different ways to checkmate the guy after). However, opponents won't play that, they'll either resign, or they'll capture gxf3 (which loses in 2), qg1+, rxg1, rxg1# (just a forced mate down the board). Or they'll take the bishop with the rook thinking the queen covers back rank mate (which it does, but it can't defend everything) rxf3, re1+, qxe1, qxg2# Basically, you have too much pressure. White Is trying to stop two bishops, two rooks and a queen with a rook and queen. The other pieces cannot be adequately developed in time to defend all the pressure, the attack is too imminent. It's either forced mate in 6, or practically mate in 3, although you can get fancy with it and checkmate them how you want, either way (unless you blunder RIDICULOUSLY) they can't defend it at all.

Hello GM Igor, if I may, you want to teach the majority of your followers some cool chess, nice, very thankfull. However, what's about making videoS if you can, if you're capable of teaching the 1000, 1200, 1500, 1800 ELO something to improve. As a Grand Master, you may not be thinking as low level chess players but as a very talanted player and that's fine. It's very difficult to teach lower players than you, because you know and you think they must know as mush as you. Lately, I have been watching your videos on different tricks and traps, and believe me, each move from the opponent on let say the Bishop opening can be chalanging and different that of all your explanations. I personely don't want to memorise moves but to know how to play it at ease with confidence. Stay safe.

This puzzle has 2 possible but equally beautiful mates. The first mate is bishop to f3, if pawn g2 recaptures on f3, then queen g1, forcing the rook on f1 to capture on g1 and after that rook g8 captures on g1 CHECKMATE. The second mate: what if pawn g2 stays there? Simple, bishop g2, forcing the queen to take on g2 which allows our queen to take on g2 CHECKMATE. If i failed somewhere pls correct me. Edit: ok i found a mistake. Rook f1 can capture on f3 too, preventing the mate. I'll analize further and then come up with another anwser. Edit 2: found it(i think) bishop e3, forcing the queen on d2 to move to c3, after that bishop d4 again, which is a trap for whites, because if queen d4 then bishop f3, then if rook f3 rook e1, forcing rook f1 and then our rook captures on f1 CHECKMATE. Edit 3: it seems i sometimes am so dumb that i can't see simple mates, after bishop e3, if the queen moves to c3 then just queen to g2 CHECKMATE

well after rook takes f3 then just sac rook on e1, queen has to take, then queen takes g2 mate however what if instead of taking the bishop u go queen to g5, blocking the battery with a queen trade? if that happens from what i can see black would go bishop takes g2 check, king takes back, queens trade, then rook takes bishop with check. at the end of the exchange black is up a pawn with a tempo and whites king is naked. That's the best i can think of for now.. lmk if anyone sees anything spicier after queen g5 please 😅 edit: just checked stockfish, it just says black goes queen d3 and the rook has nowhere to go while defending the back rank, and ultimately white has to go knight d2 giving up the queen and then after rook takes queen its like forced mate in 6 or so

If i'm whites and someone play Bf3, i'm not forced to take there right away, in fact, Bf3 can achieve a winning possition for whites rather than blacks, Why? Simple, as i said, whites aren't forced to take, so instead of rook f3 or other move like that just play rook g1, But Roy main, the bishop is protecting g1, how's that a winning possition for whites? Well you see, if bishop takes on g1, that opens a possible escape route for the king, so, after Bxg1, Kxg1, Qxg2, Qxg2, Rxg2 and however white is safe. If Bishop doesn't takes on g1 well, you can already see how things will play out for blacks. The correct option would be forcing the white queen to leave the 2 file, this can be done with bishop e3, forcing the queen on d2 to move, if Qe2, then just Bd3(bishop d4* my bad), and the queen has to move out of there yes or yes, and as soon as she leaves that file, black is now allowed to deliver the mate.

First move bishop e3, forcing the queen to move, being e2 the only safe square for the queen, after queen e2 move back ypur bishop to d4, if queen takes rook on e8 then take with your other rook the queen on e8, after that white will most likely move pawn g3, but that doesn't matters because after that then rook d1(e1 my bad again), if rook takes then bishop f3 is possible being checkmate, why? The king is still trapped in the corner and has nowhere to run, and the only possible escape route which is g1 is covered by the other bishop, that's what i'm suggesting. Edit: even if the rook doesn't takes on e1, then bishop f3 is still mate because that rook on f1 is pinned.
