Wow, the video you shared is really helpful. It's thanks to videos like these that I managed to avoid a similar situation when I first arrived in this country. The dealer tried to tack on a bunch of extra services that would have doubled the quote I got from the Toyota website. Despite all her attempts, she claimed to be giving me a discount as a welcome gesture to the country-things like extended warranty, tire insurance, maintenance, etc. In the end, I stood firm and told her to remove all those extra services, or else I'd take my business elsewhere. Thanks again for sharing such a informative and helpful video.

My wife and I recently purchased a 2024 CRV after our first 2 options flamed out. My wife wanted a CX5, I wanted a RAV4. The CX5 didn’t work for us, so our hearts were set on a RAV4. We went to 3 dealerships. We were finally able to get a test drive at the 3rd, albeit on an older hybrid version (we just wanted the base model, non hybrid). The arrogance, lack of customer service and severe mark ups pushed us to our 3rd option: Honda. There we received great customer service, a fair price and we were able to test drive the model we were interested in. I’m sorry that the Honda in AB took advantage of that couple, but our experience here in Toronto ON was the complete opposite. Toyota dealers here are the absolute scum of the earth and because of their price gouging and lack of customer service, they’ve lost customers for life.

Some years ago I owned a 2003 Toyota Taco Double cab automatic 4WD and I was living in Fresno, California, I was told that in order to get my A/C working, I had to pay a Toyota dealer $200.00 just for inspection if something was wrong such as low freon and what needs to be fixed and this wouldn't go toward the repair of the A/C. I thought that was ridiculous. Then, my family and I moved to Utah, a mechanic shop owner just added freon to my 2003 Tacoma and everything was fixed just for $100.00.

I quit my carsalesman job 25 years ago after selling a very sweet older couple a very nicely loaded Honda Accord LX. I remember the lady loved the sage cloth seats. At the dealers desk- they signed on the first offer. Some crazy amount down and still 500+ monthly. The deal went south just a few days later. The BANK actually called us back and said NO. They would not fund them unless we put them into a nicer car. It just so happened that we had the same Honda Accord in the higher EX trim with leather. We called them back and told them we had made a mistake and hoped they liked this car better. They were both over the moon. The older man loved the moon roof, which was not offered on the LX. Soon after- I realized I could not continue to work for people like this and quit. Customers really need to be smarter going into these dealerships.

If they are "recent" in Canada, then they don't have a credit history. That means they won't qualify for OEM financing, or bank financing. To get the OEM financing, you need a sterling credit rating... which you don't mention at all. In the US, they actually have a disclaimer that only "well qualified" buyers would get that rate... which is prob less than 10% of the buyer.

This is ridiculous. The Canadian government should do something about this. Omvic should have a list of dealerships that are known to operate in this fashion. I once leased a vehicle and when I chose to buy the car out at the end of the lease term the dealership said that their min interest rate was 9%. This was in 2022. They were even bold enough to say that I could not get a better rate. Of course u went to my bank and got a rate of 5% on a LOC. I still bought the car, because I liked it and still own it.

This does not seems as bad as you make it out to be. Buyer getting a ton of add ons and warranties (sure, debatable if necessary or not, but regardless they are reaping the benefits), and this buyer could be deep subprime, so the rate may be reasonable for such a risky and long term.

If any industry needs a cool off period, it is the car industry. I don't believe there is only $2500 in mark up for this vehicle. I worked for a Buick dealership in 1990 part time as I was attending college and the mark up range was between $2000-$4000 depending on the model (with the sales rep getting 25% of the profit), back then when cars were much cheaper. I had access to the invoice papers, so I saw it for myself. Then you add the hold back, floor planning, etc and you have a much higher mark up on todays vehicles.

Thanks. I was not aware that in the US tied pricing was not allowed. Too late for me this time around. I really didn't want that rear view mirror that told me what direction i was going in!

If legally nothing can be done, we should reach out to Honda NA. This is outrageous and it doesn't represent the Honda brand well.

I got my insight for 31k, paying $500 a month at 0.9 interest. No problems, 4 years later. Was a great buy. So you're wrong. Some of us actually know how to buy new cars.

I got my 2023 sport touring for 44,700 out the door cash. Even though it’s a really nice suv i could never imagine spending basically double on it. Some dealerships are just terrible.

Most of these add ons are optional but they try to stick it in the contract hoping the consumer wont argue and simply sign

I don't see how I could get "ripped" ... the minute I saw the price, the door wouldn't hit my butt on the way out. But, this can happen when the buyer focuses on "how much a month?" and has no idea what cars should actually cost. If you are one of these people, bring a savvy friend or relative.

I bought a 2023 Honda CRV Hybrid a couple years ago and they tried the same crap with the financing and other add ons! They already had my old CRV approximately 6 months prior as I had to order it. I kicked up a huge fuss and called Honda Canada. I wanted to pay cash and no financing. They told me after they had already sold my trade to take it or leave it. I told them to shove it and they backed off. Will never buy a car at Moncton Honda in NB. Way to go Moncton Honda to attempt to rip off your best customers.

Useful video! However, you shouldn't advocate for higher dealer's markups. They already make profit in Canada on so-called "delivery and pdi" (compare with much lower said fee in US). Also now Toyota and perhaps others included separate charge as "dealer fees", $2000+. These are already on their website, so not likely to get rid of.

The Canadian market is different, I'm not justifying the price, but hybrids are in very short supply and more money in Canada. The waitlist times in Canada for Hybrid RAV4's and Seinna's for example are over 12 months.

can't believe someone could accept this......... I saw a CPO car and the dealer still try to put thousands $ for some useless add-on. For the time now, I couldtell them that I am not gonna pay any one of these add-ons on the list.

In New Zealand 90,000 dollars is 54,000 US dollars which is perfectly reasonable for a high demand hybrid outside the US where cars typically cost more. The customer just needed to buy their car in New Zealand instead of Alberta 😀. Luckily cars cost less in the US even when they are made somewhere else. I just bought a fully loaded BMW X2 in the U.S. for $51k on the sticker, there were no up-sales or add-ons, and the dealer discounted the car to $47k, so he basically ate the California taxes and license fess which are the highest in the US. There is a KZbin video showing an X2 in a dealership in Germany which is also option loaded, but has the 3 cylinder 1.5 liter engine instead of the 2 liter 4, and front drive instead of all wheel drive. The car had a sticker that converted to 56k in US dollars. Almost 10k more for a lower equipment level car, purchased in the country of manufacture!

Hey I enjoyed your video. I just have one detail I would like you to think about. You seem like a very productive man that knows about money. So in my opinion if you have the money to pay cash for a car that would be the wrong thing still to do. If your interest rate is jot higher than 4 or 5%. If someone can pay cash well look at your high interest yeilding accounts which are more likely 4% and maybe 6% if maybe treasure bonds or whatever else. All I am saying is it is smarter to keep the money in those accounts accumulating interest than paying for a car cash. Do the math both ways and you will come to my same conclusion
