As a painter of 20+ years there is a better and cheaper option. I can personally tell you that the best sticking, longest lasting, and most durable spray paint out there is actually Rustoleum. I have sprayed more sem trim black than most people will ever spray anything in a lifetime. I use to get qts of it for big jobs. From experience it will be faded within a year or two. I used it because that’s what my shop would get from our paint store. So if you buy a can of sem, a can of primer, and a can of bulldog your now at $50. I guarantee that a $4.99 can of rustoleum 2x satin black will stick way better and last 5 times longer.

I personally would have gone with vinyl and a sealer on the edges to prevent it from unraveling. Easier to do for those without the skill set to paint and very forgiving. If someone messes up paint, it’s back to the sanding down the piece and trying again. Also, a coat of 2k would help with durability from debris and sun as this part will be exposed to a low pressure area and constantly be caked in dirt.

And for plastics sue a gray or gold 3-M scrubby not the red or if you use sandpaper no less then 1200 grit very lightly even that is a little course for plastics and use an adhesion promoter as well since it is plastic and paint don't like to stick to plastic ...

Also consider that the dealer has considerable overhead with his buildings, and other overhead. And should he be expected to be in business just to make others happy, or is he entitled to make something for himself as well? You did the right thing by doing it yourself.
