It's pretty easy (and cheap!) to make a dupe of the terro. You can use a small sour cream or dip container - as long as it has a lid that fits snugly. Poke about 6 small holes (2-3mm) in a single row near the top of the container (not in the lid). Using an ice pick or awl makes good sized holes. To make the solution, dissolve 1-2 tablespoons of borax in 1/4 cup of hot water. Add white granulated sugar until no more will dissolve (3-4 tablespoons). Put a couple small crusts of bread in the bottom of the container and saturate them with the borax mixture. Put the lid on the container and bury it halfway in the ground so the ants can easily get in and out of the holes. If you have frisky pets to protect, you can duct tape the lid if you want. Make multiple traps, or save the leftover mix in a jar. It's a guaranteed ant magnet/eliminator...and very economical. Hope this is helpful. 😊👍

@@margemoore6634 You are so welcome... I'm happy to share! I just want to emphasize that it is definitely poisonous to pets, so make sure to secure your container so no animals can get access to eat the stuff.

When my now teenage daughter was really young she used to refuse to eat fresh cooked or frozen green beans because she said they squeaked when you eat them and it was like they were screaming in her mouth. Needless to say, I decided to let her choose different vegetables to eat after that very imaginative description! 😬😂

Ha! Ha! Squeaky beans! 😍the start of your video today! I used to be able to hear gravel under my feet as I walked through, or worked in, my garden and giggle at the chickadees’ little chirps that sounds like a dog’s squeaky toy. Feeling hummers zoom by my head. I watched butterflies flutter all around. It grounded me and brought me peace. Thank you suburbian sprawl! I’m now distracted by speeding, thumping cars, house parties, loud music, hammering, circular saws, nail guns on and and on. I still garden. I still watch the hummers and birds. It is just different now. Reminding you to enjoy those quiet moments in your garden to where you can hear yourself think.

Jess, the very best organic treatment for fire ants is this drench: 2 Oz horticultural orange oil, 2 Oz horticultural molasses, 2 Oz liquid castille soap, 2 gallons H2O. You can also use compost tea instead of water. This drench will treat 2 mounds. It is not toxic to people, pets, wildlife. It actually conditions the soil. If you regularly broadcast dried molasses in your garden, you will not have fire ants. They detest it, and it will repel them effectively. There is also a ready made version of this drench in a product called Antifuego. But very easy to mix up and use yourself.

Jess I love the bed of roses idea! Looks like a metal head board and metal foot board . My daughter passed away a few years ago......her middle name was Rose and I still have her white metal bed frame. I recently saw it in my storage shed. She picked that frame out when she was 8 yrs old and I was trying to think of a way to incorporate it in my garden. Gardening has been my therapy to overcome the grief and heartache I feel. My pain will always be there, but in the garden I am reminded of all the beauty that still remains. God's gentle way of giving me hope and a way to get lost in this beautiful world he created. I watch the hummingbirds whiz by, the nesting blue birds in their nesting boxes and a robin taking an afternoon bath in the bird bath. All such magical moments. I have watched your channel since the Arkansas days. I have learned so much. Thank you for all the garden chats and tours.

Happy Birthday, Asher!!!! Jess, Our late lunch supper today was so good. It even was better than I thought it would be. I grew the cabbage, potatoes, peppers and garlic that were in it!! I'm so proud of that. Sometimes I think the gardening community is the only few that would appreciate that. I LOVE growing food. But, most of all...MY FOOD!!! I wish I had grown it all. But, 4 of the things that went in it is getting there!!! I also used my saved bacon grease and my tallow that I had saved. No oils. Have a blessed day!!!

We don't have the nasty fire ants, just the little sugar ants. But cinnamon works great for me. Just two days ago, I found a colony moving their larvae near my squash bed. Surrounded them with cinnamon (the cheap stuff I buy from a restaurant supply store just for the garden, not the good stuff I put in my coffee) and they were all gone within 24hr. 🐜

For bites and stings for people who are severely allergic, Mix slippery elm bark to a paste and add equal parts activated charcoal. You can keep it as a premixed gel and just grab it when they get bit and coat the bites. It's almost instant detox.

Loved the peaceful opening Guitar, gravel crunch, comfy skirt, seed apron.... Ahh! Yes, Terro liquid ant bait works great indoors too, especially each Fall when the ants seek to escape the cold. I have two persistent ant colonies that set up shop every Summer in the corners of my raised beds. I douse them with the water hose, but they always return. I've read they behave like farmers tending the soil and gathering sap from plants, but I still don't like their presence. Love all your tips and seed sowing musings.

I moved from Los Angeles to rural E TN so I grow a lot of Asian herbs and veggies since I have to drive an hour to buy any Asian veggies. Thai basil, Asian peppers, ginger, lemongrass, perilla (shio) do really well. I’m going to plant Asian cucumbers soon. Just check with the invasives list. I love eating perilla but it’s on the TN invasives list so I only grow it in containers and I make sure to not let it drop its seeds.

For eating beets that the whole family loves (even my anti veggie man!!!) Cut up beets, potatoes, onions, cabbage, carrots, (any veggies normally root) etc. Put in huge roaster. Top with alfredo sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic, pepper, and salt. Top with sliced polish sausage and bake at 375°F for 45 minutes. Then stir and bake for another 45 minutes. We serve it with balsamic vinegar 😋 its a hit for anyone whos tried it!!! Feeds our family of 7 easily and nutritionally sound!!!

Terro Outdoor Bait Houses are great for my family. Here in Texas we have fire ants. As soon as I see an ant hill around my house I place the Terro Houses near the hill and leave it there for 3 months. I'm originally from Illinois so the fire ant is new to me and their bite really hurts. My husband is allergic to them. He didn't know he was until he accidentally sat on an ant hill--ouch. Two years ago some tiny ants got inside our house so I used a spray that is safe for Humans and pets called Orange Guard which really works to kill ants nside and outside too. Love your great communication skills about the garden, and lovely voice. God bless you and yours.

Friends used to use the Terro you are using, plus the inside the house gel. They were trying to get rid of the seasonal ants for over a month. FINALLY they called Terro and Terro customer service said in that case, they recommend they go and purchase the Terro granular in a bag, and sprinkle around the edge of the house (they kept it away from dogs and kids). Within 2 days they were gone completely, not one ant in sight. The flowering shrubs that grow around the kitchen part of the house lure in ants (they thought). Thank God for the granular because every time you looked there were ants on the kitchen counters, windowsill, and food prep areas, even in some cupboards (they even had to put honey jars in ziplock bags), and they had to do all food prep in a different room of the house because of the ants. Not any more, sight of the 1st ant when the shurbs blossom, they sprinkle the granular outside against the wall of the house, and they see no more ants.

Here in the SC upstate we definitely have fire ants. Clemson Home and Garden info center has a good article on managing fire ants if you get them in the vegetable garden, but a lot of the baits for fire ants contain spinosad which is an organic insecticide and safe to use around mammals as boric acid is poisonious. Another trick for ants in the wrong place is to go to the laundry room, mix some borax with granulated sugar put in a ramkin and invert a bowl over top of it. Works like a charm.

Bitter melon is indeed a good name, it's really bitter, so I usually soak them with water for a good while, drain and sprinkle some salt, rub it in and sqieeze. This also prevents your dish from becoming too watery. You can skip the soaking if you prefer. A very popular way to eat it is stirfried with pork and tofu and egg in an Okinawan dish called Goya Champuru. And you can pickle them as well.

Crazy story, my family has used terro at the 1910 farmhouse in Tennessee for I would say 30 years. It is the sticky Karo syrup type that you put a bead of on a piece of cardboard or something. Literally until this video, I have been using it as sparingly as possible for the past 15 years, because I was told you could only get it at one place here in the country, and that place shut its doors years ago. And honestly it didn't even occur to me to Google it, because I thought I was sitting on the last couple of bottles of this magic potion that they probably didn't even make any more. How funny!

OMG, you are gonna love Thai soldier beans, I seeded them last year, they almost covered the whole treil, but not as mucj the very top as noodle beans do, plus, if i had to choose only one, I would still go for noodle b. But is nice to combine them, even in treils. You can seed them mixed, so you make sure your treils are completely covered. Regards from Argentina, where I produce seeds, hope my seeds make it to your garden one day 💚 Gabby

Thank you for the ant advice! We have tons of harvester and carpenter ants up here in Washington state. Weve tried the traps you use, cinnamon and diatomaceous earth and nothing really drives them away. We're going to give the shoveling a pile of ants from one nest to the other a try. 👍🏻

We have them so bad here in SE TN! I’m desperate at this point so I’m going to try this. I’ve had so/so luck with the dawn dish soap and orange oil but they tend to just move. Some old timers here swear by boiling water but I think you have to be super adamant by it and keep doing it til their gone.

My husband is the only other person I know who says that about beans. It’s always, please make them not squeak when you cook them. 😂

Try essential oil of basil for bites, especially wasps. It really works and takes the sting and hurt out. Might work for ant bites also, I always keep it in my medical kit. Love ya, Patty
