Dealing with Toilet Cistern Condensation

November 2013 - after mass repairs to a rotten bathroom floor earlier in the year, I'd noticed that condensation had been forming on the concealed toilet cistern, which was dripping on to the new floor.
This was not the sole cause of the previous rot but it may have been an unknown contributing factor, as the years passed by. My method seem more practical than trying to dismantle and insulate the cistern from the inside.

Hi Olly, great video for a big problem. Please advise, I have a porcelain toilet cistern which attracts condensation and is connected directly to the cold mains water supply. I did insulate the inside of the cistern with a yoga mat cut to fit the inside of the cistern and glued in place with silicone sealant. It did work for a bit but eventually the air got underneath the internal insulation any blew out the yoga mat, may the silicone was not a good glue. The insulation was pierced to let the trapped air out and so scold water got behind the insulation after a few years with the condensation on the cistern returning. What do you think of me insulating the outside of the cistern with a lagging to warm the outer surface and reduce the effects of condensation collecting on the cistern and dripping to the floor. Thanks Michael

Hi Michael, Thanks for watching and for your message. There's a really good video by DIY Doctor on this subject: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2HScnikadKjarM Mike uses a white silicone, by the looks of it and so I'm not sure what could've happened in your situation. Maybe the silicone isn't a long term solution? Some foam mats probably allow water to pass through, if they're not a closed-cell construction. I think you're idea of insulating the outside should work. It's unlikely the lagging would be cold enough to attract moisture, as far as I can imagine. I hope this helps. But do take a look at Mike's video as he's far more experienced with this than I am. Maybe leave him a comment as well.

Thanks for the quick response, it can be shocking the damage caused from the condensation forming at the base of the toilet cistern. I will try a fluffy cover for the cistern, if I can buy one, but not having any lucky so far.

I'm from the US and have never seen a toilet like yours, how it's part of the countertop. Where do you live and is that common where you'e at? Thank you for the video by the way, very informative for a young contractor.

Hi, I wouldn't say it was very common at all and I've no idea what would posses someone to do it. You're welcome and I'm glad you found it interesting. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Olly

Certainly is. But this video featured my mum's previous bathroom, even before I moved here. ;-)
