Hi, Mike, thats really kind of you to say so. Thanks. I am really geniunely glad you're getting some inspiration for your own layout. I only started back in the hobby in 2012 after a lay off of 20+ years, since giving up my 'train set' as a young teenager, so all the skills I have tried to master have been picked up on the go, with a big help from youtube. Its a great resource. All the best and I look forward to seeing your trains in action. Dave

The cutting is looking great. I think it'll look fantastic when it's done. For the smoke on the bridge you can use a candle and pass the tip of the flame over the plastic quickly to deposit soot. Just have to be careful you don't melt the plastic! Love the high school idea. Would fit in great in that corner. Looking forward to see that develop! The area over the lower lines will be great. Supermarket would look spot on. Have a look at some of the H0 buildings from Kibri or Vollmer for some kits. Finally congrats on finally getting your Swallow HST! Can't imagine it was cheap!

Hi Dave, I am in constant admiration at the quality of your model-making; it really is superb. Insofar as your triangular 600mm x600mm area is concerned I did have a thought! I worked in TV all my life and have never seen a television transmitter mast and its associated buildings on a model railway. It would fill that corner very well and you could let your imagination run riot on the building of the actual mast with, if course, a flashing red beacon on the top. Anyway, just a thought and good luck with future developments at Dean Park.

Great update. Lots of work to do. For the retaining wall I would go with option 2, bringing the wall forward.
@Castlebridge-007 жыл бұрын
A great video again. For the tunnel entrance, option 1, but with the tunnel angle not so sharp. For the 600 x 600 triangle, a forest area but with a section having been felled with lots of tree stumps showing and the odd deer just visible, or field with a national grid power structure (cant think what they are called). As for the section near the level crossing, surely a distillery that will give scope for many buildings and loading and road ways etc. I hear that the Black Dean distillery makes a mean blend. Looking forward to the final choice. Barry. Devon.

hi... as watch you going to the corner shot you mentioned having tree's and bushes on the back, my immediate thought was the rear garden of the '' ye old pub '' with swings and seating and a view point to the railway. plus a disused. mining tunnel entrance now gated at the bottom of the hill side .

Hi Dave, layout looking excellent as always. Ever thought about some rail served industry? Such as cement works or colliery ect. They fill a space quite well. You wouldnt have to model the whole site, Just the rail loader and associated buildings maybe?

Another great update. I'm encouraged by the fact it's February update 1! Liking the school idea for that corner - a bit different from the ubiquitous commercial units or industrial estate and "real world" access (could I suggest) can be off scene, ie you don't have to cram another road in. As for the other, currently vacant, corner, how about a village that hasn't yet been swallowed up by the nearby city? As always, look forward to your updates. Cheers.
@DeanPark7 жыл бұрын
hi....glad you like the school idea....it came to me suddenly last week, out of the blue! I thought, now there is a way to cover an awkward shaped space....as schools tend to sprawl out with different buildings etc. Village thing sounds like a feasable plan. Lots to do before that corner is filled. Dave
@TTT-pc5zt7 жыл бұрын
What about a water tower for that corner by the new tunnel if it is going to be slightly higher the the surrounding area. It gives you some options, modern concrete structude or brick built older structure and they are often near but outside urban areas on high ground. Also, not really seen many on layouts. Just an idea :)
@thebritfarmer7 жыл бұрын
For that corner how about a stately home/manor house or a castle/castle ruins? You could add visitors maybe some deer grazing in the stately home grounds. That was a brief glimpse and thankfully no briefs in site LOL Cheers Scott

A few random ideas for your unused spaces.... A church & graveyard? A farm or field with a hay barn, cattle or horses, and farmer on tractor working? A historical building (castle, disused pill box surrounded by overgrown foliage)? A small airfield? A bit random I know, but just trying to suggest something you might not have thought of lol!!!
@nixonthomas8067 жыл бұрын
Hi Any buildings on the proposed raised area in the south west corner will require foundations and foundations need to rest on earth to spread the load. One solution would be to have buildings built at the same time as the proposed girder bridge. In effect a horizontal girder lattice could be built matching the plan of the building or buildings. The lattice would in real life be supported by columns thus taking the building loads down to solid ground. The reason for having buildings of the same period is that in real life the bridge/ lattice work would be designed specifically for the proposed buildings. Any newer buildings would in reality have resulted in a new supporting structure being required and that would mean the closing of that section to rail traffic for say two years. Of course you don't need to model the lattice and columns as they wouldn't be visible unless you decide to erect a building near the bridge entrance then you would see part of lattice and possibly a few columns. Regards Nick

I do like the way you work and plan your layout not something I can do. On the section that you asked about the 600mm x 600mm how about a canal and lock or just tow path? Don't know if you have seen my layout but I would love to hear what you think about it
@lewistyrrell48817 жыл бұрын
Have you thought about putting a small business in that small corner? Have a scrap merchant working out of a couple of containers, possibly something as simple as a pylon running across the diagonal with a couple of workers doing some work on it. although it is a small space I think an industrial effect would work perfectly there.
@DeanPark7 жыл бұрын
Hi....I have thought of 10000 things lol. Pylon idea is good. Have other corners of the layout that could be useful. Where do you get OO Gauge Pylons that aren't brass kits?....I don't think I could cope with building one lol. Dave
@lewistyrrell48817 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, the ones that immediately come to mind are the ones that Hornby produce. I have added the link to this message. I don't believe that these are a brass kit. Something that I have not seen modelled is actually a pylon under construction. I know that these were installed in sections and usually involved the assistance of a helicopter carrying the sections as an underslung load. Perhaps having the bottom section installed with a helicopter shut down to the side might work well as a feature for your corner. Looking forward to your next video Hornby_R530_Set_of_3_Pylons/StockDetail.aspx
I tell you what you rarely see in model railways which might be nice in the corner - a castle!
@Anthony.19677 жыл бұрын
Great video again brilliant demonstration of what you are looking to do in the corner of your layout what about a farm yard scene might look nice with hay barns and cow in the fields
@PoshManSweets7 жыл бұрын
For that corner I'd recommend maybe some industrial buildings, like factories for warehouses. Older ones are often built to take up as much land as possible so quite often reach the very boarder of the railways land. Also that area looks slightly out of town... I can imagine it being a large town so would probably have some industry on the outskirts. If you're going to build a new raised section of those tracks you could have factories on both sides, can be linked by one of those internal conveyor belts you see between factory buildings across the tracks and maybe a staff footbridge?
@DeanPark7 жыл бұрын
cheers...footbridge, now there is a thought! Cheers. 100000 ideas floating in my head lol. Dave

your corner at 11 minutes, I know I am way out in left field here, but what if that area was a mountain, large hill, water fall, down to a pond, small river that flows off scene, will let the tree back drop to be used. you have lots of brick walls, just thinking you need ROCKS/ rough look. I have a ballast spreader just like that one, maybe I am using it wrong, but I don't find it leaves enough rock on the sides. can you show how you use yours plz. thanks for sharing, great layout, love watching your progress
@DeanPark7 жыл бұрын
You have sometimes to patch up the sides with ballast....move slower is the key. A mountain scene was considered but wouldnt really fit in with the surrounding area. Cheers. Dave

A church with graveyard and maybe a wedding scene would look gteat in the corner. As for the new scene over the tracks, maybe a small town scene. A row of shops on a road with a small culdisac of terrace houses going up to the track side with a metal fence facing the track with some kids watching trains pass thru it

It feels like so long since you last put out a video. I've been checking everyday. Can't wait to see this part of the layout complete. It's gonna look amazing. Incredible videos, I just can’t stop watching them. Started at the beginning and working my way through them all! Just wanted to ask what the name of that foam is, and where you get it from please?
@DeanPark7 жыл бұрын
hi, thanks for getting in touch. The white foam is Celotex....its a building insulator. I got mine from wickes. but other DIY stores will do it. Mine is 50mm thick, you get lots of different sizes. But wear gloves....the fibres don't half irritate if they get stuck in your fingers! The blue foam (if you see any in this video) is Styrofoam. Its harder to shape, but great stuff. But much more expensive. Cheers. Dave
@kavster7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I've tried XPS foam for building dioramas before, but have only ever been able to find it online. I assume Celotex is a different type of foam? I like the idea of the school It is one I used myself Just beware that while doing research I was caught in the act and the head suggested I should do the whole thing Hence I spent several years building the whole school all fully detailed inside rather than the low relief wall and playground I set out to make. It was a very enjoyable build though and will have the science block added to complete it. The idea of a farm others have made sounds good or perhaps a riding school. I also think you should fit something to do with forestry in somewhere as it is a large industry in Scotland Maybe a sawmill could be made in that area
@DeanPark7 жыл бұрын
I have access to the school....its a community school so is open at nights. And I know some of the staff lol. My school will only be mid relief and some lower relief....a whole school, wow, that would be impressive. Dave
@cedarcam7 жыл бұрын
That's very handy. In time I got to know the caretaker there who gave me access to all the areas I wanted to measure up. I used to go in the holidays. So yes the school will be a very good for you to make having the ability to measure up the buildings you want and adapt them to fit in the space you have. For me the first thing I made was the gym which is a separate building and was an interesting project in itself.
