One traditional snack I missed in this video and the previous one, is the Dutch tompouce. Although the majority of the Dutch people like them, everyone has their own way (or struggle 😂) of eating them. The kruidnootjes come in a lot of flavors as well, chocolate is one of the most popular flavors, maybe even more popular as the regular kruitnoten. As for candy, I like all kinds of salty licorice, especially the salmiak licorice types as well as licorice toffee

Tony's Chocolonely is expensive, but the price comes from it being the first to try and make slavery free chocolate in the Netherlands, in which it mostly seems to have succeeded. The tijgernootjes and similar snacks are usually for when we have guests over to have something on the table that everyone can just grab a handful when they feel like snacking. Of course some people just eat these by the bag while binging Netflix as well, but I think most people would prefer potato chips or popcorn for that.

That's what Tony claims. But they have been caught in the past to also use cocao from less savoury plantations.

Tony’s Chocolonely is huge here in the US - at least on the west coast in California and Whole Foods because it’s fair trade and anti-slavery chocolate. Plus the mold of the chocolate is really fun and different. I also feel like, while they are a little pricier, that’s because they are supporting humanity plus the chocolate is heavier - I feel like you get more in their bars.

And I can now say why I never bought it before. 1) they don't have the flavors I like (only 4 were there) 2) the flavors, packaging, name etc. all says "I am sooo hippy!!" which generally means "you pay 33% extra for the fake feeling" 3) similar with the sticker "known from ads" beside the price tag. That just means I pay a lot of money not for the product. Well, I still bought one with the honey. And yes, it tastes like good quality. So maybe the warning signs are wrong this one time ;)

The end was quite good, with you throwing Kruidnoten at each other. Kruidnoten, or their relatives Pepernoten, mixed with some hard candy and gummies together form what is commonly known in the Netherlands as "Strooigoed", which literally means "Throw stuff". It's originally a part of the Sinterklaas traditie where Sinterklaas and his Pieten (our equivalent of Santa and his Elves) come around on december 5th to give children presents and candy. The throw stuff refers to the way the Pieten throw lots of "strooigoed" from big bags as they walk through the town, or when they enter the room. So you instinctively got that right. They're as much meant to be thrown as they are meant to be eaten. Kruidnoten are now so popular though, you can basically get them year round, but you do still see them mostly around Sinterklaas.

Try poffertjes! Dusted with icing sugar they’re absolutely wonderful. Tiny, puffy pancake-like clouds of goodness. And the Dutch New Year’s Eve traditional: oliebollen. Some times they’ll be plain little balls of fried dough. Some times they’ll be the wonderful crunchy-and-moist ones with pieces of apple inside. Other versions will have rum-soaked raisins in them. You need to eat them fresh, still warm, and dusted with icing sugar. Addictive as heck. All kinds are delicious. My favourite are with apple. On cold days you need to try ‘snert’. It’s pea soup but REALLY GOOD pea soup. There are countless more dishes you should try. ‘Rookworst’, stamppot, hutsepot, spekpannekoek met appelstroop(pancakes with bacon and apple-based syrup), Limburgse Vlaai (a type of pie, either open-faced or closed, usually with fruit and that recently got protected as part of the heritage of both Dutch and Flemish Limburg)…

As a child in the 1960's we used to buy a tin of hard biscuits on which you pored hot milk, the biscuit doubled up in size and were deliciously soft and comforting. I can't unfortunately remember the name but by Dutch Ouma used to buy this at her local shop in Mosselbaai, South Africa. Tony's is a pretty expensive brand, and getting a gift box like that adds to the price. Spar in the Netherlands is also pretty expensive, no longer the budget store it was in the distant past. 10 Euro is steep even for them though, supermarket chain I get most of my groceries (and that's not a budget chain) has that same box on their website for 8.59. Speculaas and kruidnootjes are traditional for the St. Nicholas season, which is pretty similar to Christmas in the US :)

Stroopwafels = syrup wafers. On top of something? Yes! But not on ice cream. Traditionallly, you can lay it on top of a warm mug of coffee. The steaming aroma of the coffee will then seep into the wafer, making it more enjoyable. ;-) Spekulaas in Dutch, Spekulatius in German - for me, it's more or less the same thing. The omly difference I know is that Spekulatius is only avaiable around christmas, Spekulaas could be available all year round. The recipes must be quite similar, though.

The tigernuts is actually an Indonesian invention, they coated the nuts and we embraced it.

You two missed one of the most delicious of all, the gevulde koek (filled cookie). But the best thing you can do is buy them at a local bakery, same with the stroopwafels. And there is also a chocolate version of the kruid/pepernoten, those are more delicious in my opinion (especially white)

What I miss most being abroad: Frikandel (minced meat roll, really good with mayonaise, ketchup and unions, called frikandel speciaal), gelderse rookworst (smoked sausage from Gelderland), stroopwafels ,drop (locorice) and bitterballen (round croquetes). Als je voor pret bent:=if you are into fun. Bent rimes to Band. Yeah!!

The Tony chocolate is little expensive because a normal chocolate is 2,00 euro 💶 en a Tony chocolate is 1 for €4,00 2X expensive than normal chocolate

Stroopwafel should be eaten warmed up. Usually we put them on top of a cup of tea or coffee to warm it up before eating it.

The SPAR in the city center of Eindhoven is crazy expensive and barely classifies as a supermarket anyway. Its more like one of those 'togo' supermarkets you'll find at rail stations. If you'll ever visit the city center of Eindhoven again, there's a large (regular) Albert Heijn right between the shopping area and the train station.

Stroopwafels are sold in the USA often in Aldi and Costco and sometimes I see them in gas stations and even Ross.
