Dude. I am from butler originally, Went to school at the Art Institute and worked at Three Rivers Stadium. I moved to Florida in 2000 after school finished and love the weather. Down here I got to see KZbinrs like Adam the Woo, World of Micah and Casey Neistat and wondered if I could do it(I am, just starting actually), but I digress. I always wondered why someone didn't make video of quality(and I mean QUALITY, not someone doing video selfies and giggling the whole time) of the great areas of Pittsburgh. The best people could see, that I knew, was from Rick Sebak on WQED. Then, I found your channel today. I am humbled by your videos Man, these are WORKS OF ART. You bring the best of the city without compromising the downside. All the aspects of the area are expertly filmed and scored. Well Done Sir, Well done! I will be a Patreon subscriber in the coming weeks for sure!

Lived on Four mille run. Wasn't the most desirable place when I grew up there in the 70s. The mills were in action and we were bathed in sulfur suet. A few small stores. Landslide closed us off from Oakland. Kept traffic out but progress down.Tight and insulated. An easy walk up the tracks or hop a train to the enjoy the culture of Oakland and the nature of Schenley park. The park was our back yard. Flooded almost every spring. Fond memories. Was that Paris talking at the beginning of the video?

okay I know I'm late but as a local and a history buff this comment irks me. Fort Pitt was actually a British fort, and wasn't the first fort to be built in Pittsburgh. Way, WAY back in 1754 the French originally built Fort Duquesne, to try and lock in trade in the Ohio Valley and get control of the Mississippi river to make sure the trade in Louisiana (big cross continent one, the one we bought on the cheap, not the bayou) could be connected to trade in Canada. Fort Duquense is small, and nothing the size of Fort Pitt, but is the reason we have things like Duquesne University. Around the time the Ohio River Valley (the modern day Rust Belt) was a big heckin deal to Britain and France, and they were both rushing to take control of the three rivers just because of how valuable the position is. France got there first, but Britain wasn't far off. South east of Pittsburgh in a place called Jumonville Glen there was a young British land surveyor with a small armed group with him and some Native Americans too. They rolled up on these French camped out, and the Native American (Mingo indians) Tanacharison got hella pissed at the French being there in the first place and they ambushed the French. The British with them, while not necessarily innocent to violence or French hatred, basically said "oi righto, fuck the bloody french" and joined in the fighting. Turns out the guy there, Joeseph Longname Jumonville was pretty important, and when word got back to Fort Duquesne, the French were PISSED. So the British have an "oh shit" moment and buhl on out of there, and end up building a fort out of necessity, called Fort Necessity. The young surveyor with military hopes was getting ready for his first taste of warfare, you may have heard of him- his name is George Washington, not a big deal. The British got decimated, but the empires then got big mad at each other: causing the start of the Seven Years War, or the French and Indian War depending on where you live. That war completely reshaped the continent, and was arguably the first "world" war. Best of all, it all started some half an hour drive from dahntahn Pittsburgh on route 40 (which was actually established by Washington's crew.) Eventually the British won, and built Fort Pitt as a big fuck you to the French. If you've read this long thanks for reading my essay. If I'm wrong please let me know, this is kind of ranty and totally an overexpansion on a joke that was completely fine. Pittsburgh finds itself quietly hidden in the middle of a BUNCH of world events, like the cure for Polio, the building of the first iron clad ships, and well, a whole bunch of American wars and controversies like the Whiskey Rebellion.

I was born and raised in the Run along with my mom and dad. I could not think of a better way to capture the Run. Thank you for such a thoughtful and caring approach to this neighborhood. I also couldn't agree more with the neighbors highlighted in the video. Just as a note. My Mom's side of the family founded and went to the big church, St John's in your video. My Dad and his family founded and attended St Joachim's Roman Catholic Church down under the overpass. That church is now closed along wit the grade school across Saline street. I mention this because they and the church community were Slovak immigrants. I wanted to give them a shout out since they tend to get forgotten in the "Carpatho Rusyn St John's - Andy Warhol" Run facts. Slovak immigrants were a large part of the Run as well. Thanks!

Great video. My grandparents lived in the Run, on Acorn. I learned to drive on those streets, was baptized and made my first holy communion at St. John’s. I’m an atheist, but that church will always hold a special place in my heart. My dad tended bar at the Hunkie Club behind Big Jim’s. He taught me the numbers 2-10 by having me play the poker machine lol. When people talk about how Pittsburgh used to be I always think of the Run of my youth. J&L was still running over in Hazelwood, and there were still old Hinkies from back in the old world speaking in Eastern European accents, and old women in babushkas. I could go on and on about the Run.

Great vid.! To live in an all pre-gentrification area - what a dream! I lived in a mixed (delapitation and brand new) area that still remains as such. Lots of quad unit houses built in the 20’s to 12 unit and under complexes from the 60’s. They have either been re-habed with a rent hike, sold and twin townhomes put in it’s place, or still has all the charm of the woodwork trimmings, built in corner cabinets, bookcases, and telephone shelves but is plagued with mold. The city would try and assist change by doing sweeps of the older ones and citing certain codes aren’t met resulting in fines and color coded stickers on the front door to not be removed. In some cases, it wasn’t enough for the residents to own the home when someone else owned the street and sent everyone packing. Thankfully, most of the restaurants and bars still remain to get that old house fix. Hope everything works out for this lovely slice of cozy!

Wow! So happy to find this! My mom grew up here over 85years ago (she's 91 now), my grandparents married in the church you showed and mom was a member when she came along. Most residents came from the "old country" in Czechoslovakia and when my aunt had a candystore there she was related to most of the familys. Mom told me about the flooding and how the manhole cover used to "blow" which means they haven't fixed the problem there in over 85years! How could a major city like Pittsburgh allow this to happen for so long and why would they now say they'll fix it but tie it to a multi-million dollar plan to destroy this historical area?

Out of all of the things I miss about Pittsburgh, Big Jim's is at the very top of my list! I used to eat the whole Big Jim's zone and walk up the steps to my house at the top of Greenfield almost once a week!

Great video! As a Run resident, two things: Flooding has been happening in The Run for the past 100 years. The video made it sound limited to the past decade. Big missed opportunity to interview the old ladies of The Run. There's a a few (usually Slovak) ladies north of 80 who have lived here since the 1930s and never moved! Of course, they probably wouldn't have come out of the house during the filming of this but I guarantee they were watching you from their windows.

Xavya also, those ladies remember when Boundary was a through street. It was only closed in the 1980s.

My mum has her fathers boat papers from when he was 13 and came from czechoslovakia. He and his wife, my grandmother, were the original people who opened a bar where Zanos is. The house next to it, the one at the end at the end of acorn, that was the first house on the run to have an indoor toilet - according to family folklore anyways, i guess that was something all the families argued about back in the day XD

My dad’s godmother lived in that house you speak of when I was growing up. My grandparents lived on the opposite side of Acorn about three quarters of the way up.
