So, I will assume that DeanDemocracy is implying that this is some sort of Alternate Universe were James Dean decided to run for President, and his announcement may have some sort brainwashing effect. One thing I came to really love about these is the absolute casual tone that these alternate universe(s) are portrayed in. Taking AlcatrazAttack for example, it's ending slide merely goes "Today the alcatraz zone expands up to west texas" and that's it. It certainly has a solemn tone, but ultimately the event is not treated as the absolute horror that it ought to be seen as. It's basically talked about like an environmental documentary - "Today the amazonas forest has been reduced to a size of only X square miles." It wouldn't be out of place for that video to just go at the end "Your donation can help fight off Alcatraz". In a similar manner, this is just a historic documentary about a president. Sure, it's weird to us but over there it's just another thing that happened. It's nothing to worry about. And then there's a fact that this is supposedly a 2002 documentary. It talks about the 37th president, implying there were others afterwards. It's not that this dude did something supernatural and took control of the US to turn it into a dictatorship. No, he used it to get voted to be president, presumably served his term(s) and then just left. Democracy still intact. We have conspiracy videos about Biden/Harris that are more extreme and 'panicky' than these are. But over there, this kinda stuff isn't worth a big investigation or scare. It's just a normal, if curious, thing that happened. And that's a kind of dread that's wholely unique and different from how most series would attempt to induce feelings of fear, anxiety and apprehension in it's viewers. Absolutely marvelous.
@redenginner3 жыл бұрын
It could be the horror of some of these situations desensitized people. We are appalled at the living conditions of 18th century cities,but the ones living there would be treating it as a norm. The people in this universe just treat these strange events for the most part as a norm, or in President Dean’s case,a overall good thing because they are common and normal.

If this documentary was real in our universe, then every internet and television historian would say that not only this would be the first TV hijacking/broadcast signal interruption in history (the first one happened in 1977, John Dean’s one - 1968,) but also the first thing that “looked like the first YTP ever, before YTP was even a thing.”

The most interesting thing about this video is that we're just kind of left to *assume* there's some kind of mind-control going on with the broadcast. The voice-over never outright says it. This, right here, is the moment the Monument Mythos went from good to great. With this episode, the series does something that so many analog horror series are afraid to do: have an episode where the in-universe mundanity _doesn't_ fall apart, where it stays intact the whole episode. We're not witnessing some cosmic horror from beyond the stars; we're watching a perfectly normal- if slightly unsettling based on the context- documentary about the history of another world. So many of these series convinced that if they keep up the facade of normalcy for too long, even for a single episode, the audience will forget that they're watching a horror series; as far as they're concerned, the horror needs to be relentless, the illusion of normalcy needs to be ripped away as fast and as frequently as possible. But this series understands that sometimes- especially when you've already cemented yourself with the first few episodes- it can be just as effective to brace your audience for the rug to be pulled away, and then to *not* pull it away and let the audience's paranoia do the rest. And it's a move I respect the hell out of Alex for.

Watching this made me feel, uncomfortable. Like something was off, and the weirdest part is it feels like I’ve watched something like the in a history or government class. I understand that the point was that Nixon lost, Kennedy and MLK Jr survived assassination, but it feels like there’s something else. Like what if the reason why the old conservatives didn’t vote wasn’t because of his policies but something else, how did Nixon give up like that, etc. But the weirdest part is, Dean feels like someone you once knew at one point, like an old colleague or a teacher or just some guy you sat next to on a bus or the subway. He seems so, normal that it’s actually freaky.

Wallace was also running for president, and really the only political base that had anti-dean sentiments rooted in evangelical southern views. This is such a good MM episode and an absolute shining achievement for Manticore/Alex. The way that nothing is stated to be particularly wrong, but there's a real disconnect from what we hear and what happened, like how people apparently broke down crying at the candidacy announcement. We have no idea why people would react with such elation, and the only conclusion is that there's some kind of mind-control going on, something about Dean which has a cognitohazardous effect on inhabitants of the Deanverse. It's extremely elegant how the only clue that something is up comes from us as the viewers noting the strangeness and hysteria of people's reactions to Dean - the only conclusion being that he has some influence over people in this universe that doesn't affect us as outside observers. Masterful.

I'm honestly not phased by this. I know it's part of a larger Alt History Horror Universe but I can see this just as an alternate series of events. A what-if. Comical to say the least, but considering other presidents I can believe all this happening. Maybe that's what makes it scary. The fact this could have been how things are. The lingering question of how this happened and what comes next. How foreign is this world from ours? How different could it become? How much longer until it isn't even ours?

I think that Dean is some sort of eldritch entity, as his immense and near immediate popularity shows that he isn't quite just a normal human, but he has no destructive ambitions. He just wants to get into office, drive race cars, and chill with his bongos. Ok so as far as I remember, the ‘Special trees’ could send people to different points in time. What if a guy accidentally travelled back to 1955 or prior, and accidentally managed to prevent James Dean’s 1955 death. Then because of this change in the timeline, the universe cannot handle it and creates a tangent timeline where Dean decided to run for president, but because of the alterations, it creates anomalys, such as a living Alcatraz island and that. Then these reprocussions affect the US Presidency, and they decide to do evil shit like put people in the Lincloln memorial and creating a big robot inside the Statue of Liberty that eats people
