it’s honestly says so much about Clive that he leaves her body. Clive has gone out of his way to properly bury anyone who dies around him, even complete strangers who died due things beyond his control. the fact the Clive just leaves her body amidst the rubble… she truly was so evil that even the kindest man in the world, who so happens to be her first born child, has no kindness to give her.

I'm not sure if they mention this in the game somewhere but the Japanese wiki says she was Elwin's cousin. Meaning that her marriage to Elwin was most likely arranged for the specific purpose of ensuring that their children would inherit Phoenix. I am going to assume that she's probably the daughter of Elwin's father's brother and that her father probably felt jealousy that his brother was chosen as Phoenix instead of him and it lead to this whole idealization of bloodlines. That said if Clive had inherited the Phoenix I think she might have been a lot tamer because she wouldn't have had to worry about her contribution to the noble bloodline. I'm guessing that one failure and one semi-failure kind of broke her especially.

I love how she commited treason multiple times because she saw her sons as failures when both of them became Eikons while the son she thought was a success was basically a zombie, a stillborn corpse controlled by Ultima. She had what she wanted and lost everything because she was too stupid to recognize it.

What is also interesting is that Ultima in FF16 is not some mind, will or person, it's basically a Rogue AI. So her "boy" is not even a zombie, it's just a walking meat bag that was puppeted by robot!

Phoenix, Ifrit and Shiva; Three children living under Anabella’s roof who probably would’ve given anything for her love, had she an ounce to give. She lost one to her inane political schemes and threw the other two away like garbage, not even knowing the power they had. The dramatic irony is that if Anabella had been a good mother, she would’ve had _in abundance_ everything that she sought and failed to obtain.

Temporary abundance. The cruel twist here is if she wasn't the raging bitch that she is, Clive and Jill would have never met Cid, would have never started to destroy the Mothercrystals. Joshua would not have started his journey to protect Clive and stop Ultima. Ultima would have succeeded in jacking Clive's body and the end would be upon the world.

But It is also possible that things might have even played out similarly but with even less losses and sacrifices due to Rosarian army support. Cid and Elwin have similar goals concerning the bearers and they seem like reasonable people. They might even unveil Ultima sooner because of that secretive order in Rosaria by directly relaying the info to Clive should his powers awaken, which is possible it can happen when the Iron Kingdom's threat against Rosaria was very present in the prologue. In any case, Anabella was still a b***h because this is what we got lmao.

@@GunLobster Ultima seems to have limited control of the Eikons. Joshua insinuates that Clive awakening at the keep was specifically to take the chance to separate the brothers permanently as Ultima seems to want to burn away human ego entirely and replace it with cold logic. Magical Skynet, if you will. It was Ultima that forced Clive to awaken that night Joshua was "killed" and we can assume it is Ultima that keeps Clive from registering as a Dominant up until that point in the story. Ultima has been behind the machinations of the land at large specifically tailoring Clive to be his perfect vessel. Controlling almost every facet of Clive's life. With that degree of control from a completely different dimension, I don't see Ultima being deterred that badly in the even Annabella wasn't a raging bitch of a mother. His methods would have changed, everyone would still be dancing in his palm.

​@@RazielTheUnborn True, but I would have loved to see what things would be like if say, even a similar thing would have played out but the Emperor wasn't manipulated by Anabella and remained, at least according to Dion, a ruler with compassion. Maybe that Bahamut rage wouldn't be necessary, who knows. But to be fair, the story might end up really generic if similar events played out without big stakes and character development.

@@GunLobster Since Ultima can affect Dominants perception of reality, a good way to have Dion hallucinate is to have him think the Emperor is the King of Waloed come to assassinate the Emperor. Dion stabs the King only to realize he has been tripping balls and stabbed his father.

I don't know, the fact that Barnabas is remarked for having a shocking longevity and never aging whilst being the close servant of Ultima. Where as with Anabella, who is shown to also never really age across 18 years from having a 15 year old son at the start; I have a feeling she was being manipulated unconsciously as a tool by his influence.

Adding the destruction of Drake's Breath(Rosarian Mothercrystal) and Drake's Fang(Dhalmekian Mothercrystal), that makes 3 Ultimas still on the prowl.

Crazy enough, things wouldn't have happened if Annabella hasn't betrayed her people and family. Think about it: The curse would have spread unopposed and no one would have had any ideas what to do Joshua wouldn't have gone on his 13 year journey and may never have left Clive's shadow. The Empire wouldn't have gone after power without her corrupting people. Cid wouldn't have had help destroying the mother crystals and he would have likely died trying to save everyone. Sadly enough, her betrayal is the catalyst for the "good ending" that exists. Ultima may have been released hypothetically by Cid and they may have taken Clive early on when no one could have defended him

You know what's the saddest part is, she still thinks that she did nothing wrong and she was in control of everything. She cared more about her own sovereignty then anything else. But the one time she cared about someone aka Joshua was gone (or she thought) she moved on and tried to start over as empress of the empire. And when history was repeating itself, she lost another son and the empire with it. Rather then start over again (since she isn't getting younger) or live in a prison for her crimes, she rather die than face reality and as an empress. But good riddance to her. She got what she deserved.

At first, this didn't feel satisfying. But now thinking about it, her punishment fit. For the last few minutes of her life EVERYTHING she believed in was wrong. Clive wasn't a failure. Joshua wasn't weak. All she did back then had her wasting two powerful sons. They could have been the powerful family she wanted. If she was just more loving. She had everything she wanted back then, and she threw it all away, because she was impatient. Then her "back up" just died right infront of her so easily. If she had just been more hopeful and supportive with Clive and Joshua she would have gotten all she wanted. But now she saw that EVERYTHING she did was in vain. And it broke her. I DO wish she would live and suffer more. But seeing that all her choices were wrong. I think she became mentality too broken to really think about what she did. She was in deep denial by the end. She would rather die than admit she fucked up.

I like how Clive doesn't bother to tell his mother about him being Ifrit when she complains about him not awakening, her opinion of him doesn't matter anymore. And the fact that Joshua rather have Clive take Dion's body over their mother's shows just how far gone she was in his eyes as well. If you ask me she got off way too easy offing herself like that, but at least even if it was a few hours, her entire world came crashing down bit by bit before she did it. I guess you could say a part of her truly died when Oliver was strucked down finally (kind of a mercy really). Leaving her just broken enough to be truly beyond saving in any way. And the icing on the cake, the brothers reunited at long last and saying goodbye to the very woman that made any and all the parts of their lives a living hell.

Annabella's death did what I long thought impossible; surpassed Aerith's as the saddest in gaming history. At least Aerith went out in an attempt to save her world from total destruction and her demise was not in vain. Annabella, on the other hand, had a LOT of treachery to answer for, and instead of taking her comeuppance, she took the easy way out.

People have already pointed this out but yeah, the fact that basically none of this had to happen and if she'd just been an okay parent/person she'd have come up smelling like roses is probably the best piece regarding her arc. Like, she didn't even need to be a *good* person like the Rosfield Boys or Jill or Dion or who knows how many others, she just had to not be an utterly vile creature who used and abused everyone around them and she'd have gotten pretty much everything she wanted just by hanging around and doing whatever. There's a saying that I can't fully recall, but I interpret it as Good triumphing over Evil not so much because Good can beat Evil's ass, but because Evil pretty much always winds up feeding upon and devouring itself while Good winds up outlasting it in the end, and I think Anabella's downfall while her abandoned children both biological and adopted/married into achieve closure, if not happiness really does demonstrate this for me.

The difference is Clive can call upon multiple Eikons without so much as a strain. Because there was never meant to exist a second Eikon of Fire - there was only supposed to be the eight. Jill is basically the sword as Clive is her and Joshua's Shield. She isn't afraid to get her hands bloody, and when Annabella ignored his ass, Jill was having NONE of it. She was slandered just as much as her own "mother", forced to be a Dominant of war by the Iron Kingdom. Hell, she and Clive were almost like sister and brother with Joshua being the younger of the three. And that moment he raised his voice against his betrayer of a mother who enslaved him to serve in the Sambrequois Army, he has enough experience to say his mind just to put Annabella in her fucking place.

I was thinking the same exact thing. This felt more like the ending while everything else felt like an epilogue. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the ENTIRE game. However, the Annabella plot had me hooked into the game to the point where I would have liked to have seen more from her (such an EVIL, EVIL, EVIL character, I love it) and saved this scene for the ending. Part of me wanted her to get powers from Ultima so I could have Clive beat her in a boss fight.
