My my. You can hear Joseph's voice breaking in emotion as he realises his father is dying in his arms. Despite all their differences, he still loved him dearly.

Even though she acted for the good of her state as an empress, I think Maria Theresea was too harsh on Joseph about his remarriage, especially so soon after Isabella's death. Now Maria Theresea can understand how her son felt. Because just like her son, she lost the love of her life...

And none of her daughters found happiness in their marriages
@Lily1127channel2 ай бұрын
Yes but Maria Theresa also lost her life companion with whom she spent 28 years together. That must have been a much deeper attachment than a couple of years long marriage, and to live without her spouse must have been much harder, given that she spent all her adult life married to him up until that point. If she had lost him in the first few years of their marriage, after "only" having daughters and no male heirs (like Joseph), she would have certainly remarried, much as she loved him, for the sake of her empire and to secure the dynasty with heirs. Just like she expected Joseph to do.

And yet he didn’t fully make a decision because his mother wouldn’t step down until she died
@Lily1127channel2 ай бұрын
@@calliefinck6275 That is not because of her. The Holy Roman Emperor title was basically an empty official title with no effective power by that time. The emperors before Maria Theresa had power only because they had other titles as well, like Archduke of Austria, king of Hungary, King of Bohemia, etc., and not because they were Holy Roman Emperors. MT had power because of those other titles that she herself had. Francis was emperor, but only that, so he didn't have power. After Francis's death, Joseph inherited that title, with also no power basically. MT didn't die yet, so it was she who had all the other titles and the power. Of course she would not step down, why would she, usually monarchs didn't step down till the day they died. Joseph had power after her death, after he was no longer only emperor but the owner of those other titles as well.

He WAS emperor after Francis's death, but being emperor was an empty title back then, it meant no power. A Habsburg ruler had power because of all the other titles he/she had: Archduke of Austria, King of Hungary, King of Bohemia, King of Croatia, etc. These titles were Maria Theresa's always, as long as she lived, not Francis's, not Joseph's. So Joseph did not have power during her life, only after her life. It was natural like this. Just as Maria Theresa didn't have power during her own father's lifetime. So of course Joseph did not wield much power as long as she lived and he could not make own decisions. Why would he

Was Maria Theresa in Innsbruck when this happened? I read she was in Vienna. Leopold was married in Innsbruck on August 5, 1765 and Francis died there on August 18. Also, I do not recall ever reading anything about Joseph being unhappy that Leopold became Grand Duke of Fuscany. Maybe I missed something.
