Death Penalty Deep Dive. Should we have the death penalty? It’s a question that many people have passionate opinions about, but funny enough, I don’t. So I decided to dig into the subject to see if I stand distinctly on one side or the other. Once you get passed that strictly moral layer though, I think there are some other arguments for or against the death penalty, questions about how much it costs, if it deters crime or not, and how prevalent it is, exonerations, and other such things. I take a look at data from the NAACP, the Death Penalty Information Project, and the Innocence Project. I also make references to Joe Rogan, Kamala Harris, Julius Jones, and Actual Justice Warrior. Ultimately, I still don’t have an answer on if I support or oppose the death penalty or capital punishment.

I oppose the death penalty for one reason. Reversibility. As a society we cannot be put in the position of executing the innocent. I am a big fan of stricter prison sentences for criminals. One strike you’re out. I like the sound of that.

Two points you missed IMHO #1 "Life Without Parole" is still a death sentence, it's just a death sentence by old age in captivity, and the reversible nature of this sentence should only be weighed noting that you can't give a man his youth back after 40 years in prison, and those 40 years were spent in prison. #2: Life without parole and Death are both sentences for people with near ZERO chance of rehabilitation. For these people who will forever be considered dangerous, we still need to have staff to feed, house, mind, and give medical attention to them, as well as other prisoners, some who may have a finite sentence housed with them. For that I think Death is actually the ETHICAL sentence for these people, both for their humanity of getting swift justice, rather than a long horrible life in prison, but also for their fellow inmates and jailers who shouldn't have to mind somebody with Nothing to Lose.

Good points, although I would say that life in prison without parole does offer a possibility of an innocent person who was convicted having the time and chances to be found innocent later. I realize that is a very slim possibility, but it is still there regardless. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts!

@@OntheOtherHandVideos totally, but we can give them the worst part of their life back. (think about the ending of The Shawshank Redemption, as well as the recidivism rates of incarcerated people) coupled with the odds of them injuring or killing guards or other inmates. It's not as cut-and-dry as say gun control, or if we should have the TSA, but that's my take.

We should bring back public hangings. I don't think the death penalty has the same effect if it is a long, drawn out, and mysterious process. In the past, a public execution would show that the town has no tolerance for crime. This is probably the most extreme comment you will receive, but there was definitely less crime when they used to do public hanging. Our society is giving kids sex changes. Public hangings aren't crazy. They are necessary. (I wouldn't televise it though. It shouldn't be entertainment. Maybe a picture or short clip in a newspaper with a graphic warning.)

It's an interesting idea, but considering it has been almost 100 years (at least in the US) since public hangings happened with any frequency, I don't know if you can say in any certainty that "there was definitely less crime".

@@OntheOtherHandVideos The common adage that it is not the severity of the punishment but the constance of the same is partially true, the Neapolitan penologist who came up with it forgets that if the punishment is weak, one is not going to be deterred. If all I get is a smack on the wrist for murder (And I do want to murder.), I will not be deterred even if I was caught 99% of the time before the crime. A Policeman is scary not merely because of his imposing figure but because with him comes the threat of potential Death in extreme cases. Honestly, I had the same idea as the guy above since as a deterrence it needs to be somewhat public as to punish in terrorem requires a notice of the punishment and it's severity. I will be honest being a child of a Dicken's education, I am way too squeamish to commit to this. As for raw statistics crime was lower in the early 20th Century at least in Edwardian Britain.

Also, usually the death penalty doesn't bring closure to victim's family, but I didn't compare with how the family feels with life imprisonment.

No, see the death penalty as the same as the me too movement since they both have the same problem; a huge risk in punishing the innocent

Except the court of public opinion has no due process, the death penalty definitely does. There is always some risk of punishing the innocent with the criminal justice system as it is, but to compare the risk of false cancellation through MeToo to the risk of an innocent person getting the death penalty is ridiculous - there is really small risk of being on death row and being innocent, and there is a lot of due process to weed out as many of the shaky cases as possible.
