Vvd in terms of ability is the most complete centre back i've seen, he just needs to do it for longer, an easy example is this last game against west ham where he prevented 3 dangerous transitions from the opposition with his positioning and reading of the game

Gary cahill maybe as an honourable mention, won ucl, 2 x uel, 2 x pl, 2 x fa cup, league cup and made 3 premier league team of the seasons. Not the flashiest cb but definitely one of the most underrated cbs of all time. Was so reliable for most of his chelsea career while winning the biggest trophies out there, also was boltons best player before he joined.

Kompany should be in the top 5. 10 years in the prem, 4 league titles, 2 FA cup titles, 4 carabao cup titles. He came in when City were a mid to low table club, he transformed their defence in a way that it never went bad since apart from the one season literally straight after he was gone, he is the club’s biggest legend (top 3 for sure), he was one of the best captains in premier league history (not saying he was THE best), he never had a great defender next to him (which everyone in the top 5 had). Brilliant character, brilliant physically, brilliant psychologically, has the titles, the respect, the longevity, the romanticism to his career. Absolute baller he was!

@@lionelsheja6381 what “individually” does any CB show? Cannavaro is the only guy who won the Ballon D’or out of cb in the past like 20 years or so. What does Vidic or even Terry have to show out of purely individual honours? Btw, being a captain for 10 years of the most successful team in the league during that time is an individual honour. Scoring a title-winning 30 yard banger in your last season at the club is an individual achievement. Winning the league under 3 different managers with 3 different systems is also a personal achievement (especially when we are talking about Pep)

No it doesn't. Never met a Liverpool fan that could put their bias to one side. Here you have Arsenal fans honestly admitting Chelsea's greatest CB was the greatest of all time. If there was a Liverpool fan here they'd 100% put Van Dijk at number 1. Van Dijk would be 1. Gerrard would be 1. Salah would be 1. They can't keep their bias out of it and the Liverpool fans watching these podcasts are mad that their players (who up until 2019 had won fuck all) aren't considered the greatest of all time by other fans.

Van Dijk isn't top 5 yet. He doesn't have the longevity. Being a top defender is all about consistency over a prolonged period of time. It doesn't matter the style that you win things (I.e. Van Dijk is more of a 'star player' than the likes of Terry). What matters is not conceding goals, winning games and winning trophies. A couple of amazing seasons doesn't justify puting him above players that won multiple titles. If Van Dijk can repeat what he did from 18-20 for another couple of seasons then that changes everything and he can compete with the likes of Adams and Kompany.

Commenting before watching, but I’m guessing that Paul McGrath sadly won’t even be mentioned. He was maybe best just before the Prem Started, but won the PFA Player’s Player of the Year in the Premier League’s inaugural season where Villa finished 2nd. He deserves at least an honourable mention, imo he’s still top 10, one of the best to ever play the position.

It's always the Liverpool fans that pipe up. Leave your bias aside for once. A bunch of Arsenal fans were able to admit that Mr Chelsea was the greatest Cb in Prem history. If there was a Liverpool fan at that table you already know they'd have put Van Dijk first. It doesn't matter the manner a player wins a season. When determining how good of a CB a player was you have to look at how consistent they were and how long they kept it up for. Its not difficult to have 2 amazing seasons at the peak of your career. It's incredibly difficult to play like that for a decade winning trophies every year. The likes of Terry might not have been as eye-catching as Van Dijk because he isn't a 6'4 tank but he did his job of not conceding goals better than anyone, including Van Dijk.

And that's complete bs what you said about none of the others being able to transform a team. Hyperbolic and receny bias. Do you think Chelsea would've had the success they did without Terry? United without Ferdinand, Vidic or Stam? Arsenal without Adams or Campbell? City without Kompany? Of course not. Look at the modern game. Teams with bad defences get ripped apart. The only successful teams in the Premier League rn are the ones with top CBs (City, Liverpool and Chelsea). All the players in this list were integral to their team's success, but the difference between them and Van Dijk is they sustained those performances for far longer than he has. Obviously that could all change depending on how his career pans out. He's had a higher peak than most of the CBs on this list but he hasn't had a better career.

No he hasn't. He was the best CB in the world in 18/19 and 19/20. He was injured in 20/21 and this season there's many better than him. The only reason people consider him the best in the world rn is based purely off his reputation from 2 seasons ago.
