Another great video my friend! I've watched all the conquest videos and luckily I've been educated enough to have known what was bull crap and what wasn't. I think the first one I watched was on the one handed sword and right out of the gate he starts calling spathas (viking swords) and arming swords, broad swords. That gave me a good warning that this show wasn't going to be too accurate. I loved what you said on mail and I agree completely. One of the big issues with the conquest example (and SO many other mail tests) is that they are testing against butted mail, which is absolute crap. Proper historical mail (riveted mail) is phenomenally strong. It's funny, my own video one debunking myths about mail kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKWthGSDr858b5o also uses conquest as an example of horrible misinformation on mail. We think alike my friend ^_^

I've shot bows for years. I can draw up into the warbow weights 120-130. It's not just the added power but the fact that you can use heavier grain arrows at those weights too. I always want to scream when I see these videos with the people using light arrows, from weak bows against costume armor. I had a friend that used to make chain mail and some of the stronger weaves I seriously doubt anything I've shot to date would penetrate so long as they weren't a split ring or some sort of inferior metal. I'm glad to see someone debunking these things.
@7dayspking8 жыл бұрын
A long enough self-bow (or recurve.) in the 90+ lb range shooting a durable enough arrowhead (the arrowhead is very important.) will penetrate even good mail armour from close range (less than 20-15 feet.)
@kynaston14748 жыл бұрын
7dayspking Not some of that stuff chief. I hunt russian boar, I've seen boar hide alone stop 90 lb bows dead in their tracks with arrowheads designed to penetrate. Never you mind shot bows that would pass right through their shield. A shield thick enough to stop .30 caliber bullets, hard enough that you could hammer nails with it. I know about what it takes for penetration and some of that stuff he used to weave would have stopped just about anything in the arrow department cold. Even heavy 700+ grain arrows with a bodkin tip being shot from a heavy warbow just wouldn't have stood a chance. Granted that probably wasn't what everybody was wearing back then, but I'm sure some were. My point here is that it never really ends with chain mail. I mean by all rights you could weave chain mail thick enough to stop a .50 BMG, you couldn't walk in it probably, but it could be done.
@7dayspking8 жыл бұрын
Adam Bodford As I stated the length of the bow matters as well, the weight of the arrow and especially the composition of the arrow (softer arrows don't penetrate near as well.) Also from what range were these boars shot, did the shot land cleanly?? Etc.etc. I was referring to historical sets that were tested at royal armouries...they got different results with different weaves with some stopping only just above 80 and some up to 110lbs.

Nce video. I actually watched the video in question here before I saw this debunk, and I was of the same impression... why would anyone wear mail armor if it doesn't work against swords, axes, spears or maces... only thing left it would protect you against then would be a quarterstaff, which wasn't exactly a battlefield weapon... although, I'm pretty sure a quarterstaff would rip that chainmail they used as well. Sad really that so many videos exist with "tests" where they use entirely inappropriate armor, weapons or both. It really leads to misinformation regarding how they were used and made, and misconceptions about the strength and weaknesses of the armor and weapons.
@mrkiky9 жыл бұрын
+Ghroznak Well, considering a quarterstaff is an impact weapon, the mail wouldn't do that much against it. Speaking of wooden poles, later in the show they show a knight in plate armor severing a spear shaft in one strike with a one handed sword. I'm sure that's also possible.
@Vograx9 жыл бұрын
+mrkiky True that quarterstaff causes blunt trauma, but considering the padding commonly worn underneath the chainmail, and how proper chainmail would distribute the force of the impact, a quarterstaff would have limited effect when hitting protected parts. As for severing a spear shaft with a one handed sword with a single swing... uh... maybe, if it was a bamboo spear. A regular spearshaft is hardened wood, and fairly thick (depending on the type of spear and its purpose). A common spear is relatively thick as it is not really designed for throwing, but stabbing. A javelin is another story, but why would you use a javelin as a stabbing spear? Cutting through hardened wood is harder than you might think. You can split wood using an axe, but the wood is usually placed ontop of something (e.g. a stub, or similar) so it doesn't move out of the way, allowing the full force of the impact to hit the wood, causing it to split. Try splitting the same log if someone is holding the log (actually don't, might injure someone, this is to illustrate a point). You most likely won't be able to since you simply knock the log out of their hands. Same thing applies to a spear, held by a person. You try to hit it with your sword you simply knock it out of the way. You may inflict some cutting damage, and eventually break it... but cutting a spear, held by a person, in half with a single swing seems very unlikely.
@mrkiky9 жыл бұрын
Ghroznak Well actually you can split free standing pieces of lumber with the "golf swing" technique. But splitting and cutting across the grain are very different. I would say you can safely take your brand new spear shaft in battle without having any worries of a knight cutting it off with a sword. I just wished he included that part in the video. Although if he included everything that was wrong with the show the video would be 3 hours long.
@Catubrannos8 жыл бұрын
+Ghroznak A proper blow from a staff would end someone wearing mail. I've known people in plate get knocked around by staffs and not like the experience, mail and padding would help but against a decent blow your day is going to get ruined. Probably also depends on what you regard as a staff. A 2.5m staff that's 4-5cm thick will do more damage than an eastern martial arts type staff that's around 2m long and 3cm thick.
@Catubrannos8 жыл бұрын
Hauke Holst if if if if if. It's highly unlikely. If you've ever chopped wood then you know how hard it is to chop across the grain and that's on a stationary piece of wood with a firm surface underneath. Chopping at a shaft will more likely push the weapon back than cut through it. It might work if the weapon has been caught so that it is firmly held at both ends, then you could use something like an axe to snap it. By catch I mean it has been caught on a shield for instance and someone has managed to grab the end of it or maybe it's wedged into a shield or even person.
@ButterBallTheOpossum8 ай бұрын
Its crazy that "Tod's workshop" a youtube channel thats produced independently by a single man with his own money can afford to do weapons tests with accurate mideavel armour and weapons but an enormous media company like history channel with access to millions of dollars can't do the same. I'm a little upset with this particular video. A Roman Shortsword (i.e. modern idea of gladius) can easily pierce chainmail with a thrust because it would impact only one chain so that it could not absorb the blow, and it would push all of the nearby rings away from it, ripping a hole. Also, if you were defeated by someone wearing mail armor, you wouldn't be able to get a pair because he would have... ended you rightly! Also, segmentata, not used? Humbug! They weren't used in late Rome, but were VERY popular during the Republican era. 200 BC-50 BC really.
@metatronyt8 жыл бұрын
I doubt a Roman sword can pierce riveted mail, but even if it could (I would need to test it) it would not be easy for sure. It can easily penetrate butted mail, but not riveted mail which is 10 times stronger. I have never said segmentata wasn't used, I have said it wasn't as popular as hamata. Even you mention 200BC to 50BC (as far as I know it was popular in imperial era but I'll double check on that you might be right) but again, even according to your facts it's 150 years out of over a millennia of Roman history, where hamata was the dominant armour.

+Metatron The right sword with the right mail can pierce it like a knife through butter. Pay mind that chainmail in the ancient era was no where near as strong as it is today. But I still agree, chainmail is very strong, its just that the Romans prefered the superlative piercing power of gladii. I suppose I was being a little bit general considering how many different gladii and mail there are, but in terms of what they had in the Italic Peninsula was what I was refering to. Furthermore, the Segmentata was the armour of choice for Early Legionary Cohorts under the Marcius Reveloution. If you can dissprove me with imperical fact however, I won't pull the typical 5 year old youtube commenter route and I will change my belief. Anyways, I do want to say that I really enjoy your videos and I look forward to seeing more of you.

Not to mention there were different ways to weave chain mail, such as the persian chain mail, quite strong and intrincate. www.instructables.com/id/Really-Easy-Way-to-Start-and-Make-the-Full-Persian/ Try "chainmail different weaves" in Google to see how the one used by them is the cheapest and most simple, therefore the first choice for LARPers.

The gladius could easily pierce chainmail and pretty much any other armor for the time period because that was its specific purpose. Roman soldiers were trained to stab and thrust. A roman soldier fighting "correctly" did very little, if any slashing. The gladius is a stabbing weapon and it goes well with the formation in which the enemy was pretty much facing an armored and shielded stabbing machine. As for the segmentata, from what I heard it started gaining use at about maybe 25 to 50 AD and became official "standard issue" at about 100 AD and the most popular ancient representation of it was Trajan's Column. In the later period, when the barbarian tribes started gaining power and Rome was waning, the segmentata and gladius was replaced with Chainmail and the spatha.
@kirotheavenger608 жыл бұрын
chain mail could turn aside warbows. which have a smaller impact point and hit harder than you can stab. a gladius wouldn't break through proper mail, however butted mail like you see here, sure. stabbing was good for finding gaps in armour, and punching deep into the body beneath.

Haha I was watching quest just before. Still a great show for entertainment purposes. The techniques they show are some what accurate just the tests aren't. While I watch Conquest I always point out what is wrong. This is a great video Metatron keep up the great work.

zombie go boom once tried piercing mail armor with an Ivan head wearing it they used a katana a good real sword and throwing knives and an axe and the only one that pierced the mail was the axe and only because the biggest and strongest used the axe and jumped then before landing swung the axe and only pierced it about 5 inches

If mail armor was useless then why would people use it? Also what the fuck? The people just decided it had to be real because it looked like it? Even after they almost cut through it with 1 swipe of an axe?

Around 5:00 you say "Why are these shows so popular?" My answer is not to that question, but to the question of "Why would they try to teach the public that armor is practically useless?" WARNING: incoming rant... TLDR = MEDIA BRAINWASHING WANTS YOU TO BE DEFENSELESS Because "they" do not want you to feel safe. Ever. Anywhere. They want you to be afraid to leave the protective bubble of your over-monitored, over-policed streets. "Why??" you might ask, the answer is simple; otherwise "they" (the system of police, globalization, interconnections, government & taxes), will be less relevant and less important. "They" want you to rely on "them" as much as possible. It's simple supply & demand economics- if you can control one or the other it is good, but control both and it is even better. Hence public schools and "History channels" controlling the demand (supply is already controlled in an obvious manner). "They" do not want you to be able to protect yourself, defend yourself, be self-sufficient, or have any real power because you might then form some kind of opposition group, you might not pay taxes, you might realize that you actually have no choice in your pseudo-democratic-society, and that contractual voluntary self-governance makes more sense; at least more than the existing slavery of money-printing fascist government fronts for the mega-rich who rule the world which we all live under currently. Look at people who might have rocked that boat and how they were quickly 'offed', I'd list them but then we would be even further into TLDR and dangerous key-word zones. /end Voluntaryism rant (since using the "a"-word no doubt makes alarms go off somewhere) Of course, it might just be that they're stupid, and that's why they made armor look useless. Maybe. Okay, most likely, but it was a good rant eh? xD

Thanks, I hope you continue as I am quite a fan of history but being a parent I get most of my info from documentaries etc, KZbin is a big place for documentaries and I am glad you are making it easier for me to find out which are a reliable source of information.

Metatron, best beginning in a video ever! By the way, his show came out back when the history channel talked about history, and also stereotypes of the Medieval period were very, very, common. Also take into account that Peter Woodward is an actor and a playwright, not a historian. Once HEMAS and Martial Arts got involved in History and looked at the sources of actual sword play, Peter quit the History Channel and rejoined the Royal Shakespeare Company. You could give him a thumbs up for at least trying.

Great video. Peter Woodward, the guy who was the narrator / host of Conquest is an actor / stuntman. I've seen him in a couple of roles and IMO he's pretty good at his craft, which has very little if anything to do with medieval weapons. His father, Edward Woodward starred in the 80's TV series The Equalizer and in the classic 1973 horror movie The Wicker Man. Please debunk Gladiator, especially the Roman battle scene with the Germanic tribe. Unless the Roman army really could unleash napalm on its enemies, because in that case it's totally cool.
